103 Uber Drivers Have Been Accused of Sexual Assault or Abuse, Investigation Finds

After an evening of cocktails in San Diego, a woman got into the back of an Uber for a ride home. She was so intoxicated she had to ask the driver to stop so she could vomit. She says she then passed out in the backseat.

When she regained consciousness, the Uber driver was on top of her, raping her, a block from her home, according to the police report and two sources familiar with the investigation.

She was able to escape and dial 911.

Police later arrested the Uber driver, John David Sanchez, 54. When they searched his computer, they found videos of Sanchez raping women and abusing young teenagers, dating back at least five years.

In November, Sanchez was sentenced to 80 years in prison for the rape of the Uber passenger and 33 other counts against him, including sexual assaults of at least nine other women and children. Sanchez drugged many of his victims.

A CNN investigation has found that Sanchez is just one of at least 103 Uber drivers in the U.S. who have been accused of sexually assaulting or abusing their passengers in the past four years. The drivers were arrested, are wanted by police, or have been named in civil suits related to the incidents. At least 31 drivers have been convicted for crimes ranging from forcible touching and false imprisonment to rape, and dozens of criminal and civil cases are pending, CNN found.

There is no publicly available data for the number of sexual assaults by Uber drivers or for drivers of other rideshare companies. CNN’s analysis comes from an in-depth review of police reports, federal court records and county court databases for 20 major U.S. cities.

In another case examined by CNN, a woman from Miami left her kids with their grandmother and went to a bar with a friend. She took an Uber home. She says she passed out along the way and woke up the next morning with her pants and underwear on the floor.

The Uber driver allegedly carried her into her apartment, threw her onto the bed and sexually assaulted her. She is a plaintiff in a proposed class action lawsuit against Uber.

“You are pretty much hitchhiking with strangers,” she told CNN. “How many people is it going to take to get assaulted before something is done?”

According to police, the driver told them he knew the victim had been drinking and was “wrong for what he did.” He pleaded not guilty for sexual battery and awaits trial.

A woman in Long Beach, California, who alleges she fell asleep intoxicated in the back of an Uber in 2016, told CNN that she woke up with the driver assaulting her. The driver, 47, was found the next day with her phone and later arrested. He claimed the sex was consensual and the district attorney dropped the criminal case against him. She is suing Uber over the incident and for representing its services as “safe.”

“You don’t think it will happen to you,” she told CNN. “I still feel ashamed … that’s why I’m here. I want a voice. [I’m] tired of being quiet.”

Uber: ‘We want to be part of the solution’

Uber, which launched in 2010 in San Francisco as “everyone’s private driver,” is the most valuable privately-held tech startup in the world. It is valued at $70 billion and operates in 630 cities worldwide. Uber provides 15 million rides a day.

The issue of sexual assault conflicts with Uber’s brand messaging to provide a “safe ride home.” Its print and digital ads show women taking Ubers for nights out, and a partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving includes a “designated rider” campaign urging users to take an Uber to avoid driving under the influence. In 2015, Uber set up a popup kiosk in Toronto to offer free rides to those who blew into breathalyzers.

This is significant given many of the women raped or attacked by the 103 accused drivers uncovered as a part of CNN’s investigation had been drinking, or were inebriated, at the time of the incidents.

The majority of the police reports reviewed by CNN involved incidents that took place in or near major cities across the country. Uber did not provide numbers on how many of its drivers have been accused of sexual assaults.

Five drivers across various states told CNN they were not provided any kind of sexual harassment or assault training. Drivers agree to the company’s community guidelines when they sign up to work for the service. Uber said it updated its standards in December 2016 to specify no sexual contact is permitted when using its platform.

Last week, the company posted a sexual assault prevention video on its website to inform drivers and riders “how to create a safer community.” It also said it plans to host 50 community forums nationwide for advocates, leaders, drivers and riders across to talk about the issue. The changes came after CNN first contacted Uber about this story.

Uber was made aware of CNN’s reporting for this story months ago but the company failed to make any executives available to speak on the record. It canceled an on-camera interview with an Uber executive earlier this month.

On a call with CNN last week for an unrelated story, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said cracking down on sexual assault is a “new priority for us.”

“It is a priority that I expect to remain a priority for the foreseeable future,” said Khosrowshahi, who joined the company in late August after cofounder Travis Kalanick stepped down.

In a recent statement sent to CNN, an Uber spokesperson said safety is the company’s top priority this year and cited recent protocol updates such as rerunning driver background checks on an annual basis moving forward. The company also said it plans to roll out a dedicated “safety center” within the Uber app where riders can designate contacts they want to share trip details with while they ride; it will also have an emergency button allowing users to call 911 from inside the app.

“This is just a start and we are committed to doing more,” the spokesperson said. “Sexual assault is a horrible crime that has no place anywhere. While Uber is not immune to this societal issue, we want to be part of the solution to end this violence forever.”

Lyft, an Uber competitor that provides one million rides daily in the United States and Canada, is also dealing with sexual assaults by its drivers. A similar CNN review using the same methodology found 18 cases of Lyft drivers accused in the past four years. Four drivers have been convicted.

“The safety of the Lyft community is our top priority,” said a Lyft spokesperson, adding it has “worked hard to design policies and features that protect our community.”

It’s common for Uber and Lyft drivers to work for both services. But each company performs its own background checks. Both companies mostly conduct digital background checks via a startup called Checkr.

Uber said it reviews the records of driver candidates that are surfaced to the company by its background check provider. It said any serious criminal convictions, like sexual assault, sex crimes against children and kidnapping, would disqualify candidates.

The company previously didn’t have a uniform policy on rerunning criminal background checks. But when pressed by CNN, a spokesperson said in January it started running screenings on drivers every two years in mid-2017. In addition to its recent announcement about annual background checks on drivers, Uber plans to monitor new criminal offenses (via public records or pending DUI charges) as they happen.

CNN found two instances in which drivers pleaded guilty to sexual assaults while working for both Uber and Lyft.

In one case, a Seattle driver began driving for Lyft after Uber discharged him, according to court documents. He later sexually assaulted a Lyft rider. In the other case, a driver pleaded guilty in San Diego to indecent exposure and the false imprisonment of an Uber passenger, as well as battery for a separate incident involving a Lyft passenger.

Police are tracking reported crimes by drivers

Of the 103 Uber drivers accused of sexual assault or abuse, for 18 of them, criminal cases did not move forward either because charges were dropped, cases were dismissed, or drivers were found not guilty.

The district attorneys and police officers who spoke to CNN said cases don’t move forward for several reasons, such as lacking a probable cause or witness cooperation.

In addition to finding the 103 drivers accused of crimes or named in a civil lawsuit, CNN contacted more than 20 police departments to obtain data on complaints that involved Uber or Lyft drivers and sexual assault. Four police departments — Austin, Boston, Denver and Los Angeles — tracked crimes involving rideshare drivers and shared their data on sexual assault complaints.

CNN did not include most of these complaints in its tally of cases, because they could not all be verified with incident reports.

However, the numbers suggest that there may be many more overall incidents of sexual assault than the 103 cases found in the CNN investigation.

The Boston Police Department received 24 complaints or reports of Uber drivers allegedly sexually assaulting passengers since 2016. The department received three assault-related complaints involving Lyft drivers during the same period.

Since 2016, the Los Angeles Police Department has received at least 13 similar complaints about Uber drivers, eight regarding Lyft drivers and more than a dozen about ride-share drivers whose companies were unclear in data shared with CNN. Only one of those cases led to an arrest.

In Austin, police have documented at least 16 sexual assault complaints about Uber drivers — and at least ten about Lyft drivers — since 2015.

Meanwhile, the Denver police department has recorded at least nine sexual assault or abuse complaints about Uber drivers and at least 12 about Lyft drivers since 2015, but only two of those complaints resulted in criminal charges. Most of the other Denver cases became inactive due to lack of witness cooperation or were refused by the district attorney for lack of evidence.

Lawyer: Uber has been ‘keeping this story quiet’

Jeanne Christensen, an attorney with law firm Wigdor LLP, has been pursuing Uber rape and assault cases since 2015 when her firm filed a lawsuit after a high-profile rape case in New Delhi. The Uber driver, who had a previous record that included rape and molestation, was sentenced to life in prison. The incident sparked protests and caused authorities to temporarily ban Uber from the city for six weeks.

That case, and questions about how Uber handled it, thrust the issue into the spotlight.

Most recently, Christensen’s firm represents a proposed class action against Uber on behalf of nine plaintiffs, including the Miami woman CNN interviewed, who said they were assaulted by Uber drivers.

Uber is trying to compel the women to carry out their case through arbitration per its legal terms of service. When users sign up for Uber, they agree to its terms, which includes resolving any claim “on an individual basis in arbitration.”

Christensen and the women are pushing back. In a letter to Uber’s board, 14 women detailed their experiences and urged the company to remove its arbitration clause, saying it silences them and forces the issue underground.

“We trusted a company operating in the space of transportation for hire to mean what it says, and we never thought that Uber would perpetuate physical violence against women,” they wrote.

An Uber spokesperson previously issued a statement to CNN about forcing the case into arbitration, calling it the “appropriate venue for this case because it allows the plaintiffs to publicly speak out as much as they want and have control over their individual privacy at the same time.”

Over the years, Christensen said she noticed a trend in those who’ve come to her firm for help: Victims tend to be female and petite, live alone, and were inebriated at the time of the alleged assault, she told CNN.

“If a driver is going to enter her home, he has [likely] asked her enough questions and knows she lives alone,” she said.

Christensen — who said she’s currently representing 16 women who alleged they’ve been been raped or attacked by Uber drivers — will not say how many cases against Uber her firm has handled, citing confidentiality.

Multiple attorneys across the country were similarly silent about their cases against Uber. Like many large companies, Uber requires all parties to sign a confidentially agreement when a case is settled.

“We aren’t simply filing cases so Uber [can] pay women money and their lawyers to be quiet about it,” she told CNN. “That was a conscious decision that we made. Uber has done a miraculous job at keeping this story quiet.”

Police Investigate Possible Link Between Alleged Golden State Killer, Murder Case That Sent Wrong Man to Prison

Watch Video
Police in Simi Valley, California are hopeful that the arrest of a suspect in the so-called Golden State Killer case will help authorities solve the murder of a mother and her young son nearly 40 years ago.

Rhonda Wicht, 24, was found strangled with a macramé rope in her apartment on November 11, 1978, and her son, Donald, 4, was suffocated, authorities said. Craig Coley, who was dating Wicht at the time, was found guilty and spent more than 38 years in prison before an investigation last November found he was wrongfully convicted.

Last week, California authorities arrested Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, and alleged that he is the Golden State Killer, who is believed to be behind 12 deaths and at least 50 rapes in at least 10 counties in California from 1974 through 1986. DeAngelo has been charged with murder in the 1978 killings of Katie and Brian Maggiore, and pleaded not guilty.

There appear to be similarities between the Wichts’ deaths and the Golden State Killer killings, Simi Valley Police Chief David Livingstone said, particularly in “the time frame and circumstances.”

Police are working with investigators of the Golden State Killer case to compare DNA profiles of DeAngelo to that of an unknown suspect in the Wicht case, he said.

The Golden State Killer “was up and down the state and different communities, he’s definitely someone we want to take a look at,” Livingstone told CNN Monday.

“It’s a long shot because, though there are similarities, there are sufficient differences in the cases. But we will look at anyone, serial killer, rapists, in the time frame even if the M.O. wasn’t that similar,” Livingstone said.

In 2016, Simi Valley police and the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office began investigating Coley’s case after a retired Simi Valley detective expressed concerns about Coley’s guilt, authorities said last year.

Biological samples that were thought to be lost or destroyed were found in a private lab, authorities said. A new advanced forensic analysis was conducted, and investigators found that a key piece of evidence used to convict Coley contained the DNA of other individuals — and not Coley’s.

Coley was tried twice before he was convicted on two counts of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Gov. Jerry Brown pardoned Coley last December. In February, he was awarded more than $1.9 million for the wrongful conviction.

Man Charged With 1977 Alleged Rape and Killing of Woman in South L.A.

A man charged with allegedly raping and killing a 25-year-old woman in 1977 in South Los Angeles faces the death penalty or life in prison, authorities announced on Monday.

Kenneth Ray Matthews, 60, was charged with one count each of forcible rape, murder and attempted first-degree residential robbery, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

The charges against Matthews includes the special circumstance allegations of murder during the execution of a rape and murder during the commission of a robbery, making him eligible for the death penalty, authorities said.

Matthews was set to be arraigned sometime Monday, authorities said, in the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown L.A.

On Dec. 6, 1977, authorities said, Leona Davis had put her two young sons to bed at her home in the 8700 block of Menlo Avenue in South L.A. Matthews is accused of raping and fatally stabbing Davis in the neck in front of the children, ages 4 and 7. He fled, authorities stated, after he allegedly stole items from the victim’s house.

Matthews, who was arrested last week, had DNA evidence collected at the woman’s house that tied him to the crime, authorities said.

At a later date a decision will be made to seek the death penalty while the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division investigates the case.

According to the L.A. Times, LAPD homicide focused on Matthews after running a fingerprint found at the victim’s home through the state’s offender database.  It was not clear, the Times reported, what the relationship was between Matthews and Davis.

ICE Director Thomas Homan Announces Plans to Leave Government

Thomas Homan, the acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, announced in a statement on Monday he plans to leave government.

“It has been the honor of my life to lead the men and women of ICE for more than a year,” Homan said in a statement. “The decision to leave federal service after more than 34 years is bittersweet, but my family has sacrificed a lot in order for me to serve and it’s time for me to focus on them.”

As acting director of the agency, Homan has been a fierce defender of the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

Homan, a career law enforcement officer, served as the public face of the administration’s aggressive efforts to step up immigration enforcement. He often took the microphone, including at White House briefings, to defend his agents’ arrests of undocumented immigrants, to call for more robust enforcement and to attack sanctuary city policies. He drew attention last year for telling Congress that undocumented immigrants “should be afraid,” and stood by the comments to CNN at the time.

An ICE official, speaking on background, said Homan, the agency’s deputy director, was originally set to retire in January 2017, but agreed to remain at the agency as acting director when then-Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly asked him to stay on. The official went on to say that Homan was asked to accept the nomination after being told last fall that the administration had not found a nominee for permanent director.

“Due to family considerations, he informed DHS leadership early this year that he planned to retire this summer and was asked by the secretary to remain in his position in the interim to assist with transition planning,” said the official.

Homan’s announcement comes as the Trump administration continues to see turnover among top officials and has its immigration policies at the forefront of the public eye.

Around the same time as Homan’s announcement, a caravan of migrants seeking asylum began to reach the U.S. border with Mexico, with dozens vowing to wait at the border until they are all admitted to the U.S.

Meanwhile, a two-hour drive west, a caravan of immigrants who drew the ire of President Trump was waiting at the Tijuana-San Diego border crossing to ask for asylum in a scene marked by emotion and theater.

Air Force Two landed at around 10:30 a.m. at the Naval Air Facility in El Centro. The vice president stepped out of the plane his wife, Karen, and waved to a small crowd of military personnel, some of whom had brought their children to meet him. He shook hands and posed for photos before hopping into a black sport utility vehicle in a long motorcade for the trip to a Border Patrol station.

Stormy Daniels Sues President Trump for Defamation

Watch Video

Stormy Daniels is suing President Donald Trump over his comments dismissing a composite sketch of a man who the porn star says threatened her over her alleged affair with Trump more than a decade ago.

Earlier this month, Trump called the sketch “a total con job.”

“By calling the incident a ‘con job,’ Mr. Trump’s statement would be understood to state that Ms. Clifford was fabricating the crime and the existence of the assailant, both of which are prohibited under New York law, as well as the law of numerous other states,” Daniels’ lawyer, Michael Avenatti, wrote in the lawsuit.

“It was apparent that Mr. Trump meant to convey that Ms. Clifford is a liar, someone who should not be trusted, that her claims about the threatening encounter are false, and that she was falsely accusing the individual depicted in the sketch of committing a crime, where no crime had been committed. … Mr. Trump made his statement either knowing it was false, had serious doubts about the truth of his statement, or made the statement with reckless disregard for its truth or falsity.”

The suit is separate from another lawsuit in which Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, is suing Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen, over the legality of a 2016 hush agreement in which she was paid $130,000 to keep quiet about an alleged affair between her and Trump. The President, who is also a defendant in the lawsuit, has denied any sexual encounter between the two. Daniels also has sued Cohen for defamation.

A California judge last week halted Daniels’ lawsuit against Cohen for 90 days while a criminal investigation of the President’s lawyer moves forward in New York.

Avenatti has said they plan to file an appeal of that stay.

Sotomayor was on the bench hearing arguments after the fall, but tests later revealed that she suffered a “multipart displaced head splitting fracture of her proximal humerus” according to a statement released by Kathleen Arberg, the Court’s Public Information Officer.

The justice will undergo a “reverse total shoulder replacement surgery,” Arberg said.

The surgery comes as the Court has finished hearing oral arguments for the term and is expected to release all the remaining opinions by the end of June.

Sotomayor will curtail activities for the next few weeks while she recuperates and will wear a sling and participate in physical therapy for several months.

She is expected to fully recover her mobility and shoulder function, Arberg said.

French Museum Devoted to Works of Étienne Terrus Discovers Majority of Its 140 Paintings Are Fake

A museum dedicated to the works of French painter Étienne Terrus has discovered that more than half of its collection is fake.

The Terrus Museum in Elne, the southern French village where the painter was born, believes that 82 of 140 paintings are counterfeit.

Elne’s mayor, Yves Barniol, told local TV France 3 that an investigation into the paintings was first launched after Perpignan-based art historian Eric Forcada raised his doubts about the authenticity of the museum’s art. Forcada was working as a guest curator at the museum, which had recently acquired around 80 paintings.

Following Forcada’s query, Barnoil called upon a panel of experts who confirmed the majority of paintings held in the collection were fakes.

The new collection, which includes the counterfeits, were unveiled at the museum’s reopening after extensive renovations on Friday.

Forcada first noticed discrepancies in the paintings’ style, noting that some of the buildings featured in Terrus’ work weren’t yet constructed during that time. He also noted inconsistencies in the materials used, adding that the ink signature was easily wiped away with a glove.

Authorities in Elne have launched an investigation into the identities of the counterfeiting culprits.

Forcada said it was a good step in tackling a wider issue.

“Today, we ask ourselves the question: as art historians, how will we determine fakes in the future? This Terrus affair allows us to clean up some of this market,” Forcada told TV France 3.

Prior to the scandal, Terrus paintings have been sold for up €15,000 ($18,118), with drawings and watercolors fetching as much as €2,000 ($2,415) according to Forcada.

The Terrus Museum first opened its doors in 1994 to honor the local artist, who was born in 1857 and died in 1922.

Terrus primarily worked in watercolor and oils, painting in the Fauvist style, a tradition known for its bright hues and impressionistic leanings that amplify the natural appearance of portraits and landscapes through color and imagination.

Terrus studied at the studio of the academic Parisian painter Alexandre Cabanel and was friends with many famous artists of the time, including Henri Matisse and André Derain.

‘Enough Is Enough’: $50K Reward Offered for Information in Fatal Shooting of 15-Year-Old Girl Near South L.A. Burger Restaurant

During a news conference Monday morning, Hannah Bell’s family and members of the community urged witnesses to come forward with information and for the shooter to turn himself or herself in.

One community member led a brief chant saying “Enough is enough,” and called for an end to gun violence in the South L.A. neighborhood where the shooting occurred.

Bell was shot multiple times at close range about 9 p.m. Friday while at the check out line of Best Burger at Western Avenue and 78th Street, Detective Gabriel Ruiz said Monday. Her mother, Samantha Mays, was with her when the shooting occurred and held her in the ambulance. Bell eventually died at a hospital.

The shooter was described as wearing a hooded sweatshirt and was last seen running south on Western Avenue.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

“I hope that this community will come out, show their anger, and their resentment, and denounce in the most fervent, way that this has to stop,” Los Angeles Police Department Capt. Peter Whittingham said. “This is not tolerated by anybody in this community.”

Hannah Bell is shown in an undated photo posted on a GoFundMe page on April 28, 2018.

“It was wrong to take my daughter, she was innocent,” Mays said to the shooter during the news conference. “Come forward. It’ll be easier on you to give in and take your punishment like you deserve.”

The victim’s cousin described Bell as being “the sweetest, most polite, most caring, loving person and member of our family.”

“Imagine for one second, for one minute, that it was your daughter, your cousin, one of your siblings that was taken,” the cousin said.

The victim’s oldest brother, Marquis Jones, said children and parents in South L.A. do not feel safe because of ongoing gun violence. He and other members of his family urged others in the community to come forward with information.

“I wouldn’t want this on my worse enemy, I wouldn’t want this on anybody,” Jones said.

Skipp Townsend, a community leader, said that children are hurting children in his neighborhood and offered his condolences to Bell’s family.

“No mother should ever, before mother’s day, be planning a funeral for her daughter,” Townsend said. “That is totally unnatural.”

Capt. Whittingham said he hopes justice will be swift in this case.

You don’t come into this community and shoot an innocent female and think you can get away with it. It will not happen,” Whittingham said. “It will only be a matter of time before the person responsible for this tragic senseless crime is brought to justice.”

Ronny Jackson Will Not Return as Trump’s Physician: Report

White House physician Ronny Jackson will not return to his role as President Donald Trump’s personal physician, Politico reports, citing two senior administration officials.

The move comes after Jackson, a Navy rear admiral, withdrew his nomination for secretary of veterans affairs following a string of allegations that included he loosely handled prescription pain medications, was intoxicated during an overseas trip, and created a toxic work environment. Jackson has denied the allegations.

The White House did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment.

Navy officer Sean Conley took over as Trump’s personal physician last month and will continue in the role, Politico reported, citing the senior administration officials.

A White House official told CNN last week that Jackson had returned to the White House Medical Unit, but not as the President’s physician.

The White House continually defended Jackson as his nomination cratered on Capitol Hill this week. Trump addressed the accusations throughout the week, calling Jackson “one of the finest people I have met” at a news conference Tuesday and blaming Democrats for what he said was an unfair attack on the White House physician’s record. That same day, top senators on the Veterans Affairs committee announced that they would postpone a confirmation hearing for Jackson scheduled the next day.

On Wednesday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Jackson’s record was “impeccable,” and said he had passed multiple background checks, including one conducted by the FBI.

After Jackson withdrew on Thursday, Trump launched into an attack on the committee’s ranking Democrat, Jon Tester, over his opposition to the nominee and called for the Montana Democrat to resign in a tweet Saturday morning. The President kept up the attack at a rally in Michigan Saturday night, saying, “I know things about Tester that I could say, too. And if I said them, he’d never be elected again.”

CNN reported Friday that the White House medical unit under Jackson’s watch frequently functioned as a “grab and go” clinic where mid-level staffers to the most senior officials could obtain prescription drugs without being examined by a doctor, according to five of the medical unit’s former and current employees.

Woman Accused of DUI in Huntington Beach Crash That Killed 3 Teens Rearrested After Being Considered Flight Risk

A 27-year-old woman who had posted bond after being arrested in connection with a DUI crash that killed three teens in Huntington Beach last month has been rearrested after investigators believed she was possibly trying to flee the country, officials said.

Bani Duarte is shown in a photo released by the Huntington Beach Police Department on March 29, 2018.

Bani Duarte, of San Clemente, was arrested on a $5 million warrant and booked on suspicion of murder and felony driving under the influence charges, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department.

She was first arrested on March 29 when her white Hyundai Sonata rear-ended a red Toyota stopped at the intersection of PCH and Magnolia Street.

AJ Rossi, Dylan Mack and Brooke Hawley, three teens visiting from Las Vegas during their spring break, were killed in the crash.

Police said they had obtained more evidence after Duarte was released from custody that showed she was possibly trying to avoid prosecution by fleeing the country.

She was arrested about 1 p.m. Sunday in Downey.

She is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

‘I Feel Personally Embarrassed,’ Ex-Police Chief Says of Learning He Worked With Accused Golden State Killer

Former police officers who worked with the man accused of being the Golden State Killer said nothing about their co-worker's behavior would have led them to believe he was the man who terrorized California for a decade.

In interviews with KTXL, a former Auburn police chief and corporal with the Exeter Police Department said it was hard to believe that their onetime colleague, Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., was suspected of being the serial killer authorities say is responsible for at least 12 slayings, 46 rapes and more than 100 burglaries between 1974 and 1986.

"I feel personally embarrassed," said Nick Willick, the former chief of the Auburn Police Department, who fired DeAngelo in 1979 after he was caught shoplifting. "It's a black eye not just on my department but law enforcement."

After a decades-long manhunt for a suspect, authorities last week arrested 72-year-old DeAngelo at his Citrus Heights home in Sacramento County. Investigators say DNA from one of the crime scenes matched DeAngelo's.

Bill Cosby’s Own Words Led to His Conviction, Juror Says

Watch Video

Bill Cosby’s admission that he obtained prescription Quaaludes to give to women he wanted to have sex with convinced at least one juror the comedian was guilty of sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, that juror said.

Harrison Snyder, in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America” that aired Monday, said he believed Constand’s claim that Cosby assaulted her in 2004 at his home in a Philadelphia suburb.

And, Snyder, said, the testimony of five other accusers who testified was not necessary for the conviction.

“I don’t think it really necessarily mattered that these five other women were here because he said it himself — that he used drugs for other women,” Snyder told “GMA.”

Snyder, 22, was referring to a deposition Cosby gave in a civil lawsuit brought by Constand.

The attorney for Constand asked: “When you got the Quaaludes, was it in your mind that you were going to use these Quaaludes for young women that you wanted to have sex with?”

“Yes,” Cosby replied in the 2005 deposition.

Going into the retrial, there was a question as to whether the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements against sexual abuse would factor into Cosby’s case. Snyder, who said the case against Cosby was not open and shut, said he was unaware of #MeToo.

A jury in Norristown, Pennsylvania, last Thursday found Cosby guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault. The 80-year-old comedian faces up to 10 years in prison on each count.

Cosby did not testify at his retrial. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled.

‘He Actually Waterboarded Her’: Newport Beach Man Accused of Beating, Torturing 65-Year-Old Wife

Iran Supreme Leader Says U.S. ‘Feet Must Be Cut Off’

Iran’s most powerful political and religious figure has said the United States’ “feet must be cut off” in the Middle East as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo renewed his criticism of Tehran his tour of the region.

“Wherever US entered, it created instability, brought misery to people; that’s why US’s feet must be cut off from West Asia; US must exit this region,” Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader said in a tweet on Monday. Khamenei also accused the US of stoking tension between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Speaking in Saudi Arabia at a joint press conference with his Saudi counterpart on Sunday, Pompeo called ran “the greatest sponsor of terrorism in the worlld.”

The comments seemed to further signal that the US could pull out of the Iran nuclear deal within two weeks. US President Donald Trump has until May 12 to decide whether to continue waiving sanctions on Iran that were lifted under the Iran deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

As part of the 2015 pact — agreed by Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama, some European countries, Russia and China — Iran must reduce its uranium stockpile in return for international sanctions being lifted.

“US officials agitate Saudis, creating discord and chaos in West Asia … they want to turn Muslims against one another,” Khamenei said in a tweet. Iran and Saudi Arabia are longtime regional rivals and have been embroiled in an escalating war of words in recent months.

In the series of tweets Monday, the ayatollah said the US planned to provoke “ignorant” governments, an apparent swipe at Saudi Arabia.

“If these govt. officials gain some wisdom, they won’t confront the Islamic Republic; but, if they stand against Iran, they will certainly suffer from defeat,” tweeted Khamenei.

Saudi Arabia has repeatedly come out against the Iran nuclear deal, and called on Western allies to clamp down on its rival’s ballistic missile program. Trump has insisted that a new Iran deal should restrict Iran’s missiles.

Iran says it will resist any efforts to disarm it. “The enemies want us disarmed while they threaten us; this is an immoral, irrational and ambitious demand,” Lieutenant Commander of Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said on Monday, according to Iran’s Fars news.

Saudi Arabia accuses Iran of supplying Yemen’s Houthi rebels with weapons. Saudi officials have accused the group of using Iran-made ballistic missiles in their attacks on the kingdom in recent months.

Speaking on Sunday in Tel Aviv alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Pompeo said the two had discussed Iran and reiterated US support for Israel.

‘In breach of the JCPOA’

Meanwhile, the UK, France and Germany — the three European countries party to the deal — have scrambled to preserve the deal in the face of Trump’s threats to withdraw.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke by phone for more than an hour Sunday, agreeing to work closely to maintain the deal, according to a statement from Elysee Palace.

Macron said he wanted to keep the original deal but called for further talks on areas the Trump administration singled out for criticism. Trump has repeatedly spoken out against the so-called sunset provisions which allow restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program to expire at certain dates.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani accused Trump of already breaching the deal.

The “current conduct of the United States would be in breach of the JCPOA,” Rouhani said.

He added that the Trump administration’s negative comments about the deal had created “fear and ambiguity for different countries and businesses for their relations with Iran,” undermining the benefits of the deal.

L.A. Budgets $430 Million, More Than Doubling Its Previous Amount, in Effort to Ease Homeless Problem

In his fiscal 2018-19 budget, Mayor Eric Garcetti more than doubled the amount — $430 million — dedicated to easing the city’s intractable homeless problem. Only about 20% of the proposed spending, however, would come from general fund money earmarked for direct services to homeless people.

That $80 million, also twice the amount available in the current budget, would go to programs run by the mayor’s office, city departments and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. The joint city-county agency funds shelters and outreach programs, conducts the annual homeless count and maintains homeless data systems.

More than half the homeless spending in the new budget, which still must be approved by the City Council, is long-term debt authorized by Proposition HHH to pay for housing construction that probably will take two years or more to complete. Another big chunk is the value of city-owned land that is being offered to developers for those projects.

The centerpiece of Garcetti’s program is a $20-million fund to open shelters across the city. The mayor wants 50 to 100 beds in each council district by January. Each district would receive $1.33 million and have six months to build a shelter or forfeit the money to another district.

Brazilian Breaks Record for Biggest Wave Ever Surfed

Watch Video

Brazil’s Rodrigo Koxa surfed the biggest wave ever with a world-record 80-foot monster at the infamous Nazare break in Portugal.

Koxa’s streaking descent down the massive wall of water set a new official record for the largest wave ever surfed and earned him the prize for biggest wave of the year at the World Surf League Big Wave Awards in Southern California.

The ride, on November 8, 2017, was deemed to have overtaken Garrett McNamara’s record of a 78-foot wave at the same venue in 2011.

The Quiksilver XXL Biggest Wave Award, which comes with a $25,000 prize, goes to the surfer who catches the largest wave of the year by any means — either by paddling into it or being towed in by a jet ski.

In other awards, UK surfer Andrew Cotton was honored with the best wipeout of the year after a horrifying tumble that broke his back at Nazare in November.

Cotton was rescued and taken to hospital, but said he was looking to returning to surfing “in a couple of months.”

“I’m feeling good, obviously I’m in pain, but I’m feeling positive, and I’m looking forward to rehab and getting back out there really,” Cotton told CNN’s Don Riddell from hospital at the time.

Hawaiian Paige Alms won the women’s big wave performance award, while Ian Walsh took the ride of the year title for pulling into a cavernous tube at the legendary “Jaws” venue on Maui.

Suicide Attack Kills 29 in Afghanistan, Including 8 Journalists

Watch Video

Eight journalists were among 29 people killed in a suicide attack in Kabul Monday, including a famed photographer who had written of the dangers of reporting in the Afghan capital.

The journalists died when a bomber disguised as a TV cameraman detonated a second bomb at the site of an earlier explosion. Both attacks were claimed by Islamic State.

The first blast happened at around at 8 a.m. local time in the Shashdarak area of the city, where the US embassy and Afghan government buildings are located, prompting journalists to rush to the scene.

The second explosion came as the attacker, posing as a cameraman, detonated explosives as journalists huddled around the scene, Kabul City Police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai told CNN.

In a statement issued via the social media app Telegram, ISIS said a “martyrdom brother” blew his explosive vest up among a group of “apostates” and killed and wounded a number of them. The group named the bomber as Qaqaa al-Kurdi and the second attacker as Khalil al-Qurshi. ISIS did not provide any evidence for the claim.

Eight journalists, including at least one woman, died in the blasts, according to Najib Sharifi, director of the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee.

In a tweet Monday, the Global News Director, Michele Leridon, honored Marai for his “extraordinary strength, courage and generosity” and praised his “consummate professionalism” and “sensitivity” during his 15 years covering the Afghan conflict for AFP.

AFP said the death of its “treasured colleague” Shah Marai in Monday’s twin blast in Kabul was “a devastating blow”.

The tweet ended with Leridon sending “condolences to the families of other journalists killed in this terrible attack”.

A further 45 people were injured in the two incidents, and have been taken to city hospitals, according to Ministry of Public Health spokesman Wahid Majroh.

The agency said Marai joined AFP as a driver in 1996, the year the Taliban seized power, and in 2002 he became a full-time photo stringer, rising through the ranks to become chief photographer in the bureau.

AFP Global News Director Michele Leridon released a statement on the death of the long-serving photographer.

“This is a devastating blow, for the brave staff of our close-knit Kabul bureau and the entire agency. Shah Marai was a treasured colleague who spent more than 15 years documenting the tragic conflict in Afghanistan for AFP.”

He leaves behind six children, including a newborn daughter, AFP said.

In an essay entitled “When Hope is Gone,” written in 2016 — before the birth of his sixth child — he acknowledged the danger of living in the city with his young family.

“I don’t dare to take my children for a walk. I have five and they spend their time cooped up inside the house.

“Every morning as I go to the office and every evening when I return home, all I think of are cars that can be booby-trapped, or of suicide bombers coming out of a crowd. I can’t take the risk.”

The site of the explosion was close to NATO’s Afghan headquarters, the US embassy and Afghan government buildings, including the Presidential palace, the Defense Ministry and the headquarters of Afghanistan’s intelligence services.

US Ambassador John Bass condemned the attack.

“I condemn today’s terrible Kabul attack (and) reaffirm our commitment (to) stand with the Afghan people in their fight for peace (and) security across Afghanistan. We mourn for those murdered, including the brave journalists who stand for truth in the face of violence,” he wrote on Twitter.

Spate of attacks

A few hours after the strikes in Kabul, an attack in Kandahar Province killed 11 students at a local religious school. The suicide bomber had targeted a convoy of Romanian soldiers. Five of them were injured in the blast.

No group has yet claimed responsibility.

Afghanistan has witnessed a spate of attacks in recent weeks. Days ago at least six people were killed, including two Afghan soldiers, when a car bomb exploded in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province.

On April 22, a suicide blast killed 57 people — including at least five children — and wounded over 100 more at a voter registration center. That attack was preceded by a car bombing in southern Afghanistan in which at least 13 people were killed and 35 others injured.

The incident took place outside a sports stadium in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province. A wrestling match was taking place inside the stadium at the time of the attack.

The uptick in violence comes despite reports around six weeks ago that suggested some factions of the Taliban had expressed interested in pursuing peace talks with the Afghan government.

Those reports came on the heels of an Afghan government announcement in February that it would be willing to recognize the Taliban as a legitimate political party as part of a potential ceasefire agreement with the Islamist militant group.

Central American Migrants Wait at San Ysidro Port of Entry With Hopes of Crossing Into U.S.

Watch Video

A month after beginning their arduous trip north from Central America, a caravan of migrants is so close to their goal of reaching the United States they can see the lights of its shops.

Around 100 migrants are camped out on the Mexican side of a border crossing here, waiting for a chance to enter.

It’s cold — around 55 degrees Fahrenheit — and men, women and children are lying shivering on concrete as rain begins to fall, wondering whether they should give up for the night.

To their right, people have been coming and going freely through the turnstiles that lead to the US — its billowing Stars and Stripes flag visible. But the migrants’ future is unknown.

They have traveled on foot, by bus and by train, carrying their possessions — and sometimes their children — and hope of a better life.

The caravan is both a humanitarian and an activist mission, as organizers created the event to draw greater attention to the migrants’ plight.

Earlier, the migrants marched from Friendship Park in Tijuana to the San Ysidro, California, port of entry. They stood on the Mexican side; on the other side is San Diego. It was the final leg for some in the caravan of hundreds of migrants, which had reached Tijuana on Tuesday.

The migrants are congregating on a bridge leading to the US border while waiting to be processed by American officials. A US Customs and Border Protection spokesman says they do not have the capacity to process asylum claims at the moment and it’s not clear when they’ll have the space to accept them. They’ll have to wait on the Mexican side until their claims can be heard.

Read: Migrants vow to wait at border until they are granted asylum

Waiting game

Overnight Sunday, around 20 adults and children are sleeping on the walkway to the port of entry.

Some of the migrants are sick and you can hear them coughing as they try to sleep.

Gabriela Hernandez and her two children, Omar, 6, and Jonathan, 2, huddle under blankets near the turnstiles. It eventually got too cold and they moved to a more protected area.

A legal volunteer loans the children a phone so that they could watch cartoons in Spanish, and some other kids are playing with straws that volunteers brought them from McDonald’s and eating sugar.

Volunteers have been bringing them coffee, milk, sugar and chocolates and, earlier, Mexican officials let them out of the center to get pizza for the children.

They’re resolute. They’re not going anywhere.

But they are aware of the uncertainty of their fate. There is no welcome mat rolled out here. US President Donald Trump has vowed to do what he can to prevent the caravan of migrants to enter.

Before this group arrived, CBP officials said the port had already reached full capacity, and migrants trying to get into the United States may need to wait in Mexico as officials process those already in the facility.

Until now, Gabriela was hopeful — they all were — but, as it’s getting later and later into the night, she voices uncertainty.

“I don’t know what to think anymore,” she tells me.

It’s unclear what Monday holds — it’s an hour-by-hour situation — and for now she plans to hunker down.

Fellow migrant Tesla Rich says she remains hopeful: “Of course I have faith. It’s going to be fine.”

Don’t Make These 5 Big Airfare Booking Mistakes

We talk to the folks at the travel app Hopper about some of the biggest mistakes people make when booking flights – and how small changes could save you big money!

Hopper is a great little travel app. It’s a bit different from other travel sites in that it analyzes billions of fares and searches each day in order to “predict” when fares are at their best prices. Pop in some search dates and it will tell you the cheapest days to fly and let you know if it’s a good time to book. If it’s not, they’ll alert you when the time is right.

Recently, we chatted with Liana Corwin of Hopper to hear some of the findings from their recent research into common airfare booking mistakes. Here’s what they revealed.

According to Hopper’s analysis, some of the costliest mistakes include:

You’re an Impulse Buyer (Average Cost: $46 on domestic trips and $139 on international trips). Hopper found that two out of three ticket prices will drop at some point within 24 hours of the original search or booking, with an average savings of 14%, so it pays to wait.

You’re not Checking Alternate Airports (Average Cost: $32 on domestic trips and $99 on international trips). If there’s an alternate airport, you can save an average of 10%.

You’re Not Being Flexible with Dates (Average Cost: $65 on domestic trips and $198 on international trips). In general, flying on Friday will cost you 20% more than flying on the cheapest day. In general, Saturday night stays will cost you 4% more.

You’re Booking Too Late (Average Cost: $139 on domestic drips and $529 on international trips). Gone are the days when you could land a last-minute deal because the airline discovered they had spare seats. The computers are doing a much better job of making sure that each plane is sold out (or oversold).

You’re Booking Too Early (Average Cost: $38 on domestic trips and $474 on international trips). Flights go on sale 11 months before departure, but don’t expect to catch deals more than 150 days prior to takeoff. Booking more than six months ahead can cost you since airlines set their initial prices conservatively.

Hopper is now doing hotels in certain cities, so give it a download!

Oregon Driver With Truck Full of Chips Gets Lost in Woods for Days, Doesn’t Eat Any

When Oregon truck driver Jacob Cartwright first set out on Tuesday to deliver a shipment of potato chips, he never expected to emerge from the wilderness four days later — on foot.

And, despite being lost in the woods, the 22-year-old didn’t touch the chips he was transporting, said his boss, Roy A. Henry, the owner of Little Trees Transportation.

Cartwright had been driving from Portland to Nyssa, Oregon, a town near the Idaho border, trying to make a delivery by 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, CNN affiliate KATU reported.

But his GPS system sent him up the wrong road and into a “remote and mountainous location,” the Oregon State Police said.

Henry said Cartwright entered the wrong address, but because he’d never been in that town before, he couldn’t tell whether he was going the right way or not. He continued following the GPS, not knowing he was going the wrong way. It was the middle of the night at that point, Henry said, and Cartwright had missed three opportunities to turn around.

Once Cartwright finally decided to try and turn around, police said the 18-wheeler began sliding toward a steep embankment and got stuck on the snowy and muddy road.

With no cellphone signal, Cartwright began walking back along the road he was driving on and at some point began walking through the forest to find someone to help him free up the truck, Henry said.

“He said he didn’t stop, he walked 12-13 hours a day all three days,” Henry said. “He told me the last night, he wedged himself under a log and the ground to stay warm and stay out of the elements.”

State police searched for Cartwright and the truck during the four days he was missing.

“Luckily it wasn’t snowing last week, it was very warm last week,” Henry said.

Cartwright ended up finding his way to Interstate 84 on Saturday, where he flagged down a driver who gave him a ride to his home in La Grande, Oregon, about 9 miles away. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The trucking company posted to its Facebook page Saturday, saying “JACOB HAS BEEN FOUND ALIVE!!!!!”

“He was so dehydrated that his kidneys stopped functioning,” Henry said, adding that Cartwright also had possible frostbite in his right foot. Henry said he joked with Cartwright about having a truck full of chips and wondered why he didn’t eat any of them.

“That stuff’s worth something, that’s the load — I’m not gonna touch it,” Henry said Cartwright told him. “That’s the way he was raised, that stuff’s not yours, you don’t touch it.”

L.A. Football Club Playing 1st Major League Soccer Home Game at New Stadium

When Dodger Stadium opened in the hills above Los Angeles in April 1962, it was so spectacular it was called the Taj Mahal of Baseball. And, just as with the original Taj Mahal, it turned out the architects forgot to include drinking fountains.

The oversight followed Dodger owner Walter O’Malley to his grave, earning mention in his obituary 17 years later.

So when Jonathan Emmett started sketching plans for the Los Angeles Football Club’s new home in Exposition Park, the first open-air professional sports venue to be built in Los Angeles since Dodger Stadium, he made sure not to repeat that mistake.

But Emmett, the design director for L.A.-based Gensler Sports, didn’t stop with the water fountains. Banc of California Stadium, where LAFC will play its first Major League Soccer home game Sunday, has the amenities that reflect the hefty price tag.

At $350 million, the privately financed 22,000-seat building is the most expensive soccer-specific stadium in U.S. history. And its completion, a month ahead of schedule, caps a wave of construction that has seen 18 of the 23 MLS teams either build, renovate or begin work on intimate soccer venues in the last 19 years.

Football Player Who Lost Left Hand as a Boy Drafted by Seattle Seahawks

Shaquem Griffin didn’t let having one hand stop him from playing football.

The University of Central Florida linebacker lost his left hand at the age of 4 due to a rare condition called amniotic band syndrome, which stunted the development of his hand, according to a 2012 Tampa Bay Times article.

But after countless accolades, including being the AAC Defensive Player of the Year, the Florida native was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday. He was the 141st overall pick, in the fifth round, making him the first one-handed player to be drafted in the modern era, according to NFL.com.

“#AgainstAllOdds,” is all Griffin had to say on Twitter as he tweeted a GIF of family and friends jumping with excitement.

“Welcome to the family,” the Seahawks tweeted Saturday with Griffin’s signature hashtag “#AgainstAllOdds.”

Prior to Griffin, NFL.com says Ellis Jones was the first one-handed player before the Super Bowl era to be drafted, in 1945.

Even before the draft, Griffin signed an endorsement deal with Nike. He tweeted a photo of himself signing papers Friday with a printed Nike swoosh at the top.

“Never doubt heart,” Griffin tweeted. “Excited to announce I’m joining the @usnikefootball fam. Let’s work! #againstallodds”

Not only that, but Griffin will also be playing with his twin brother, Shaquill Griffin, a cornerback who was drafted by the Seahawks in the third round last year, according to NFL.com.

“#AgainstAllOdds, @ShaquemGriffin is headed to the @Seahawks to be reunited with @ShaquillG!!” UCF tweeted Saturday.

This is the first time since 2001 that brothers were drafted by the same team, according to ESPN. The last time was when the Tennessee Titans drafted wide receiver Kevin Dyson in 1998 and his brother, cornerback Andre Dyson, in 2001.
