Co-Founder of Failed Fyre Festival Arrested on Suspicion of Federal Fraud Charges

The co-founder of the Fyre Festival was arrested and charged with one count of federal wire fraud on Friday, according to the Manhattan US Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors allege that William “Billy” McFarland, co-founder and CEO of Fyre Media, defrauded at least two investors who invested about $1.2 million total in the Fyre Festival. McFarland allegedly also presented one investor with false stock ownership documentation in an effort to legitimize the project.

He was arrested Friday in New York and is scheduled to appear before a US Magistrate Judge on Saturday. It’s unclear whether McFarland has an attorney.

In a press release, acting Manhattan US Attorney Joon Kim said McFarland “promised a life-changing music festival, but in actuality delivered a disaster.”

“McFarland allegedly presented fake documents to induce investors to put over a million dollars into his company and the fiasco called the Fyre Festival,” Kim said.

Disorganization turned festival into failure

The Fyre Festival was promoted by McFarland and Fyre Media as a high-end music festival that took place in the Exumas, in the Bahamas, in April.

Attendees paid up to $12,000 to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime experience that was advertised with models, celebrities, top-notch acts, five-star chefs and private jets and yachts — only to arrive and find anything but.

The festival turned out to be a massive disaster, with little to no organization, half-built disaster relief tents for shelter, a menu donned with limp cheese sandwiches and — the worst part — no beer.

The sealed complaint released Friday alleged McFarland schemed investors to obtain “money and property by means of false and fraudulent pretenses, representations and promises” from late 2016 to May 2017.

Fyre Festival was short-lived

McFarland started Fyre Media in 2016 to “build a digital app that would allow individuals organizing commercial events, such as concerts, to bid for art and celebrity bookings at such events.”

McFarland started organizing and promoting the festival in late 2016, along with rapper Ja Rule. The duo used a handful of female celebrities, including Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, to promote the event, enticing both investors and wealthy concertgoers to participate.

The festival’s line-up featured many popular music acts, including Blink-182, Migos, Lil Yachty and Major Lazer. Blink-182 canceled its appearance amid the disorganized chaos.

An attorney filed a $100 million class action lawsuit against Ja Rule, whose real name is Jeffrey Atkins, and McFarland in May, alleging the event put attendees in danger. No attendees were injured from the event.

FBI Arrests 27-Year-Old Man in Connection With Disappearance of Chinese Grad Student

A man has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of a visiting Chinese graduate student last seen June 9 on the University of Illinois campus, the US Attorney’s Office for Central Illinois said Friday.

The last known sighting of 26-year-old graduate student Yingying Zhang was on the afternoon of June 9, 2017. (Credit: U of I Police)

Investigators with the FBI think the student, Yingying Zhang, 26, is probably dead, a news release from the attorney’s office said.

Brendt Christensen, 27, of Champaign, Illinois, was charged with kidnapping, the news release said.

An affidavit says Christensen was under surveillance Thursday when agents overheard him saying he kidnapped Zhang, the statement said.

“Based on this, and other facts uncovered during the investigation of this matter, law enforcement agents believe that Ms. Zhang is no longer alive,” the statement from the US Attorney’s Office said, without offering further details.

The FBI says Christensen was driving the black Saturn Astra that was captured on security camera video picking up Zhang the afternoon of June 9.

She was shown entering the front passenger side of the vehicle, which then drove away.

There are more than 300,000 Chinese students and scholars attending US universities. Zhang’s disappearance triggered widespread concern in China, with discussion of the case dominating both social and traditional media.

Zhang had a year-long position at the university’s department of natural resources and environmental sciences. She graduated from Beijing’s prestigious Peking University last year with a master’s degree in environmental engineering, according to a department webpage.

Christensen’s first court appearance is at 10 a.m. Monday in federal court in Urbana.

109 Arrests Made at Illegal Street Racing Crackdown Near Castaic Industrial Complex

More than 100 arrests were made in Castaic Thursday following an illegal street racing crackdown near an industrial complex.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials released this photo of arrests being made on June 29, 2017 at an illegal street racing crackdown.

The operation was conducted at an industrial park near Witherspoon and Avenue Penn. The complex houses thousands of workers during the day, but turns into a ghost town after business hours, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. Authorities arrested 109 people for allegedly participating or spectating at the illegal speed event, often referred to as a “sideshow.”

Seven people were booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and their vehicles were towed.

More than 100 spectators were also cited at the illegal speed event on June 29, 2017. (Credit: Santa Clarita Valley Station)

In addition to the arrests, 102 others were cited for spectating at an illegal speed event. Seventeen of those cited were minors.

Officials said street racers flock to the area to perform “burnouts, donuts and drifting.”

“It isn’t just the reckless driving or racing that is illegal, as the onlookers discovered,” sheriff’s officials said in the release. “A momentary loss of control, which can happen all too easily, can have devastating consequences for both the drivers and spectators.”

The crackdown operation was a joint effort by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Puppy Stolen From Michigan Boy’s Arms Returned to Family After Rescuer Saw Dog for Sale on Facebook

A puppy stolen from a Michigan boy's arms in his own front yard last week has been reunited with her family, thanks to some rescuers' detective work.

Tiffany Townsend told WXMI the dognapping happened as her children played in their front lawn on Grand Rapids' southeast side, with their puppy, Nyla, a Pekingese poodle mix. Nyla is also an emotional support animal for her son.

She says a woman pulled up to their home and grabbed the puppy out of Townsend's youngest child's arms before speeding away.

After finding out about the story,  Lyndsey Sturgeon, founder of Lost Paws, LLC, and her marketing partner, Bianca LaFountain, decided to get involved.

"That little boy was very happy to have his dog back," said Sturgeon. "His mom said he hadn’t slept, he was crying (and) he blamed himself, he was just having a really, really hard time.”

LaFountain saw another woman's post on a Facebook garage sale site trying to sell the puppy. The two rescuers took quick action – they arranged a $100 sale the next day, avoiding any accusations to not spook her.

“Being able to get that dog back to them, it was just amazing," said Sturgeon.

And though Sturgeon thought they had little chance finding Nyla once she was stolen, that never stopped them.

"Even though it’s a long shot, you need to pursue it," Sturgeon said.  "You need to look on every single possible garage sale site, Craigslist, any kind of a sale site like that."

She also recommends micro-chipping your pet, that way it proves ownership despite not having paperwork on hand.

As for the Townsend family, they're thankful to be reunited and plan to press charges against the thief.

Visitors Told to Stay Out of Swollen Kern River on Fourth of July Weekend

The weather promises to be sunny and hot, and a fireworks show is scheduled to light up Lake Isabella on Saturday night, setting up a perfect Fourth of July weekend for thousands of visitors expected to flock to the banks of the Kern River over the holiday.

But after a spate of drownings this month on the powerful 165-mile-long Kern, officials have a message for visitors: Stay out of the water.

This year’s melting Sierra Nevada snowpack, after one of the wettest winters on record, has swollen central California rivers with cold, fast-moving water.

Casualties on the Kern, about three hours north of Los Angeles, have been mounting and include five drownings, two people missing and thought to have drowned, and a heart attack death, according to Sgt. Zachary Bittle, who coordinates search and rescue operations in Kern County.

Heart Transplant Survivor Dies Shortly After Giving Birth to Daughter in Tennessee

After giving birth to her baby girl, Megan Moss Johnson got to hold her daughter in her arms, feed her and burp her.

In this photo from a GoFundMe page, Nathan Johnson holds his new daughter, Eilee Kate, with his wife, Megan. She died a short time later.

It was a celebration of new life for Johnson, who received a heart transplant seven years ago, and her husband, Christian music artist Nathan Johnson.

But the 31-year-old mother experienced complications and died just eight hours later of unspecified causes.

Johnson had a smooth delivery and got to greet daughter Eilee Kate just like any other mom, said her husband’s friend and Christian singer Josh Wilson.

“Nathan is devastated,” Wilson wrote on a GoFundMe page that he set up for the family. “There are no words for this, so I won’t really say much more. Here is what I know. Nathan is a wonderful man and an amazing father. He loves his daughter dearly. ”

Support quickly poured in for Nathan Johnson, and his daughter. As of Friday afternoon, more than $350,000 had been donated to help pay for food and bills.

“She loved people, loved her husband so much. She also had a great faith in Jesus,” Wilson told CNN of Megan Moss Johnson. “The sadness and the grief is very real, but we still feel that there is hope.”

‘The gift of life’

When she was 15, the Missouri native contracted a virus that led to myocarditis, a potentially fatal heart disease marked by inflammation of the heart. She needed a heart transplant at 23 because of later complications, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“I never thought about being an organ donor until I needed one,” Megan Moss Johnson told the Post-Dispatch at the time. “It can save lives. It saved mine. It’s the gift of life.”

She wrote about her journey on her blog and in a book about her called “Megan’s Heart.”

A year after her transplant, she married her husband, Nathan, and moved to Nashville, according to CNN affiliate WSMV.

The birth of her daughter

Just before 3 a.m. Tuesday, the Johnsons became first-time parents.

“They were so excited after (their daughter) was born that they couldn’t really sleep,” Wilson told CNN. “They were giddy.”

Nathan Johnson posted a picture of the joyous moment on Instagram.

“Happy Birthday Eilee Kate Johnson,” he wrote. “Megan was/is a professional and feels great. Her heart worked perfectly the whole time and Eilee introduced herself quickly and smooth. I am a rich man!!!”

But a few hours later, she started to experience complications, Wilson said. By 11 a.m., new mother Megan Moss Johnson was dead.

Team Johnson

Wilson said Megan had been a big supporter of organ donation since she herself needed a heart transplant.

“Her organs are going to save over 50 lives,” Wilson told CNN. “She’s going to change the lives of a lot of people because of that.”

He set up a GoFundMe page with the moniker “Team Johnson” aimed at raising $40,000. It has since raised more than eight times that.

As word spread, other Christian music artists expressed their support for Johnson, who releases instrumental music under the name Meaning Machine, He has also played guitar for big-name Christian artists including Grammy winner Francesca Battistelli and Mat Kearney.

“He is a gifted, kind, joyful, and hard working man who is going to make an excellent father,” Battistelli wrote.

Wilson said the donations will help ensure that Nathan Johnson doesn’t have to tour for the next six months while he adjusts to life with his newborn. The money will also help pay for daycare and, years from now, college for Eilee.

The funeral for Megan Moss Johnson will be on Sunday in St. Louis, Wilson said.

‘We Need More People Like Him in the World:’ Off-Duty Firefighter Recuses 2 People From Fiery Plane Crash on 405 Freeway

The Orange County community is praising one brave firefighter after he rescued two people trapped inside small plane that crashed on the 405 Freeway near John Wayne Airport.

John Meffert, from Avalon on Catalina Island, was off-duty and driving along the freeway when the twin-engine Cessna 310 crashed on the southbound 405 around 9:25 a.m.

He immediately jumped into action and removed the victims, a man and woman in their late 50s to early 60s, from the fiery wreckage,  according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

OCFA Capt. Larry Kurtz told KTLA that it’s difficult to say what would have happened had Meffert not been there to help the pair.

“Typically when we have these type of situations bystanders do step in to aid,” said Kurtz. “That speaks to the human spirit of people helping others out. The fact that this individual’s training kicked in is so much better. It was very fortuitous that he happened to be on the southbound 405 at the exact same time.”

The pair was transported to a local hospital with major injuries.

Kurtz, who briefly spoke to Meffert at the scene, added that the firefighter seemed to be a heroic and kind-hearted man.

“He seems very humble, very selfless. We certainly need more people like him in the world,” said Kurtz. “He was very calm and very relaxed. Obviously he’s a professional and he deals with emergency situations all the time. From what other firefighters report on the scene, he functioned very well during this.”

Teen Girl Fatally Shot in Road Rage Incident After Leaving Pennsylvania Mall; Gunman Sought

Watch Video

Bianca Nikol Roberson had just left a mall where she’d been shopping for new clothes for college with her family.

Her car and a red-pickup truck tussled on the road and now she’s dead in what police are calling a road rage incident.

“A man in the red pickup truck pulled out a gun and shot her in the head, killing her,” said Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan.

The hunt is on for the suspect.

Police: Suspect’s actions ‘just unconscionable”

Roberson, in her green 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, and the suspect in the pickup truck were traveling along Route 100 in West Goshen, Pennsylvania, just west of Philadelphia on Wednesday evening.

The officers who initially believed they were responding to a serious car accident quickly realized Roberson had suffered a gunshot wound to the head, West Goshen Police said in a statement.

“They were jostling for a position or whatever. And unfortunately this gentleman took it to a degree that was just unconscionable,” West Goshen Police Chief Joe Gleason said to CNN affiliate WPVI .

After the cars collided, Roberson’s car left the roadway and hit a tree.

Witnesses describe the driver of the red pickup as “a white male, 30 to 40 years of age, blonde hair and a medium build.”

Police released a still photograph of the two vehicles driving side-by-side down the road.

Authorities continue to review traffic cameras of the roadway and surrounding areas, hoping for a clearer photo or license plate.

‘A good girl’ headed to college

Roberson, 18 had just graduated from Bayard Rustin High School, according to a post on the school’s website.

“She was a good girl, honor roll student, looking forward to going to college,” her father, Rodney Roberson, said to WPVI.

Family members said Roberson had been shopping with her mom and grandmother before the crash occurred. They say she was headed to Jacksonville University in just a few weeks.

“She’s so young. And to go through something like that by herself, she had to have been pretty scared,” said her brother, Dontae Alburg.

Roberson’s father called on the suspect to come forward.

“If you don’t even think it was your fault, and have a conscience, come forward and give us some closure and explain in your own words what happened,” he pleaded.

District Attorney Hogan agrees. Speaking directly to the suspect, he said, “Turn yourself in now. Every second you are out there, you are only making this worse for yourself and worse for this young lady’s family.”

A GoFundMe has been set up to pay Roberson’s funeral.

Minimum Wage to Rise in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Other California Cities on July 1

A lot of Americans are getting a raise this holiday weekend, as minimum wage hikes take effect Saturday in cities, counties and states across the country, including in California.

In San Francisco and Los Angeles, the increase is a step toward a minimum wage of $15 an hour — the “living wage” threshold that workers’ rights activists have been lobbying for since 2012.

The minimum wage goes up to $14 an hour in San Francisco on Saturday, on the way to $15 next year. In Los Angeles, it rises to between $10.50 and $12, depending on the size of the business. It’s will hit $15 for all businesses in 2021.

“It’s a lot of help,” Agadette Solis, a 21-year-old IHOP hostess in Los Angeles, told CNNMoney.

She joined the Fight for $15 movement last year, and says her wages help support her two siblings and her mother, who has another baby on the way.

“Even if it’s $1 or $1.50, it’s more money for me to save up or spend on my siblings,” Solis said. Her pay will jump from $10.50 an hour to $12.

Other parts of the country have approved more modest bumps. Maryland will raise the minimum wage from $8.75 to $9.25 this weekend, then up to $10.10 next year.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Congress hasn’t raised it in 10 years.

Here’s where workers will get a boost on Saturday, and how much they’ll start making.

Chicago: $11 an hour.

Cook County, Illinois: $10 an hour.

Emeryville, California: $15.20 an hour for businesses with more than 56 employees, and $14 an hour for businesses with 55 or fewer employees.

Flagstaff, Arizona: $10.50 an hour.

Los Angeles: $12 an hour for businesses with more than 26 employees, and $10.50 an hour for businesses with 25 or fewer employees.

Maryland: $9.25 an hour.

Milpitas, California: $11 an hour.

Montgomery County, Maryland: $11.50 an hour.

Oregon: $10.25 an hour. (Exception: $11.25 an hour in the Portland metro area, and $10 an hour in some counties designated as “non-urban.”)

Pasadena, California: $12 an hour for businesses with 26 or more employees, and $10.50 an hour or businesses with 25 or fewer employees.

San Francisco: $14 an hour.

San Jose, California: $12 an hour.

San Leandro, California: $12 an hour.

Santa Monica, California: $12 an hour for businesses with 26 or more employees, and $10.50 an hour or businesses with 25 or fewer employees.

Washington, D.C.: $12.50 an hour.

47 Arrested, 77 Weapons Seized in Largest Gang Takedown in San Jacinto Valley: Authorities

Dozens of people were arrested, and 77 weapons were seized in what law enforcement officials said Thursday was the largest gang takedown in the San Jacinto Valley.

Operation Valley Vigilance was a seven-month investigation that culminated Thursday with the arrest of 24 people and the seizing of dozens of guns and several pounds of drugs from San Jacinto to Hemet, Riverside District Atty. Mike Hestrin said.

The sweep targeted organized gangs, gun and drug traffickers, and suspects with felony warrants, including murder. It was the largest single-day operation in southwest Riverside County and the San Jacinto Valley, Hemet Police Chief Dave Brown said.

Thursday’s sweep launched at 6 a.m. and involved hundreds of local, county and federal law enforcement officials moving simultaneously on nearly 60 locations. Combined with arrests earlier in the investigation, officials say 47 people were taken into custody, 77 weapons and 4 pounds of drugs were seized in the operation.

Southbound 405 to Be Closed for Hours After Small Plane Crash in O.C.; Traffic Snarled

Traffic was jammed on the 405 Freeway through the Santa Ana area after a small plane crashed Friday morning on the southbound roadway, initially prompting the full closure of the heavily trafficked freeway ahead of the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Vehicles attempted to turn around to get off the 405 after a small plane crashed near John Wayne Airport, snarling Orange County traffic on June 30, 2017. (Credit: KTLA)

The 405 was closed in both directions immediately after the plane crashed at approximately 9:35 a.m., as it was headed back to John Wayne Airport to make an emergency landing.

Two people in the plane were hospitalized. No other injuries were reported, although the plane may have hit four to six vehicles, according to Caltrans.

Northbound lanes were largely reopened following the temporary closure; on the other side of the freeway, vehicles were getting by on the left shoulder as of noon, Sky5 aerial video showed.

“SB 405 is closed indefinitely except for HOV lane as investigation into plane crash continues. NB 405 HOV lane also closed,” Caltrans District 12 tweeted around 11:30 a.m., nearly two hours after the crash.

However, Caltrans tweeted a short time later that the entire southbound was entirely shut down; the closure was expected to last at least another four hours, the agency said.

A hard closure was in effect on the southbound 405 at State Route 73, in the Costa Mesa area, according to Caltrans District 12.

Drivers headed southbound are urged to take the 73 or the 55 Freeway, Caltrans said. Another alternate to avoid the closed stretch of freeway was to take State Route 22 to Interstate 5.

“CHP incident commander Ryan Shackleford says southbound 405 closure will be for ‘a long time’ for investigation into plane crash,” Caltrans tweeted.

The fiery wreckage from the plane remained on the southbound freeway near the MacArthur Boulevard exit, and will likely not be removed until federal investigators can examine it. Authorities did not specify a time frame for when that would happen.

“Right now this aircraft’s home is going to be here on the southbound 405 … for a little while,” said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz.

A piece of the plane landed in the northbound car pool, and Caltrans crews are working to assess the damage it caused to the pavement and median.

Traffic was snarled in southbound lanes past the 55 Freeway, Google Traffic Maps showed. Traffic was also jammed on the northbound side of the freeway, through the back up did not extend as far.

The 55 and 73 in the area also showed significant traffic in the area, according to the traffic map.

Sky5 video over the scene showed some cars turning around on the 405 as traffic slowed to a crawl.

"We got a mayday! We got a mayday!" the panicked pilot said over radio to air traffic control, according to audio obtained by KTLA. "Mayday, mayday!"

The crash occurred a short time after the plane left the airport, and the pilot said he would attempt to head back to John Wayne, according to the recording.

"We're still trying to get a little bit of altitude ... I lost my right engine," he said.

A Federal Aviation Administration official indicated in a preliminary statement that the plane -- a twin-engine Cessna 310 -- "crashed under unknown circumstances" short of Runway 20R.

The pilot "declared an emergency shortly after taking off," FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said in a emailed statement.

A man and woman, both in their 60s, were on board the plane when it crashed. They were hospitalized with traumatic injuries, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz.

Their conditions were not immediately known.

“The fact that nobody else was injured was very fortuitous,” Kurtz said.

South Pasadena Man Suspected of Killing 5-Year-Old Son to Be Returned to L.A. County After Arrest in Las Vegas

A South Pasadena man suspected of killing his 5-year-old son is set to arrive in Los Angeles County Friday to face a murder charge, though the child’s body still has not been found.

Aramazd Andressian appears in a Las Vegas courtroom on June 27, 2017. (Credit: KTLA)

Aramazd Andressian Sr., 35, was arrested last week in Las Vegas, where investigators said he was “socializing” instead of looking for his missing son. He is expected to arrive at Long Beach Airport midday Friday and to then be booked into jail locally.

Since his arrest June 23, Andressian Sr. has been held in Las Vegas police custody on $10 million bail. On Tuesday, he appeared in court in Nevada and waived his right to an extradition hearing, smiling and joking with the judge.

He is suspected of killing his son, Aramazd “Piqui” Andressian Jr., some time during a 6 1/2-hour unaccounted period after the pair left Disneyland early Friday, April 21.

The boy’s mother, Ana Estevez, who was getting a divorce from the child’s father, reported her son missing the following Saturday morning, when the pair failed to show up for a planned custody exchange in San Marino.

On Monday, an L.A. County sheriff’s homicide lieutenant said investigators have evidence leading them to believe the child’s killing was “pre-planned” and motived by the parent’s “tumultuous divorce.”

The boy’s father was found unconscious next to his BMW at Arroyo Park in South Pasadena on the morning the child was reported missing. The car was doused in gasoline and Andressian Sr. had taken prescription drugs, according to sheriff’s investigators. He then gave conflicting information about his son’s whereabouts, and a search of the park turned up nothing.

Detectives later repeatedly searched the Lake Cachuma area in Santa Barbara County, where Andressian had gone after Disneyland. They found no evidence the boy was ever there, but investigators plan to return to the area, hoping to narrow their search area.

Andressian Sr. was arrested because he was a flight risk, authorities said. L.A. County District Attorney Jackie Lacey  described the criminal filing against him as a “no-body murder charge.”

14 Men Charged in Mexican Mafia-Directed Attacks on L.A. County Jail Inmates: FBI

Fourteen defendants, all but two of them already behind bars, have been charged in a scheme allegedly directed by the Mexican Mafia to assault Los Angeles County jail inmates.

Arrests in connection with the multi-agency investigation, announced Friday in a joint news release sent out by the FBI’s Los Angeles office, were made Thursday.

Mexican Mafia “facilitators” relayed orders to “Sureños” or “soldiers,” men already in the county jail system, to assault or kill other inmates that were “perceived to have violated Mexican Mafia rules,” according to a news release.

The investigation started in July 2016 when federal investigators began looking into a series of violent attacks at county jails that they believed were being directed from outside the jails.

One case involved an inmate who the Mexican Mafia believed was cooperating with law enforcement. The inmate was stabbed in the head and upper torso after a Mexican Mafia associate gave an order for him to be killed, the release stated. Another inmate who owed money to the notorious criminal organization was stabbed in the upper torso multiple times by gang members.

Members of the FBI’s Pomona-based San Gabriel Valley Safe Streets Task Force monitored phone calls in which plans for assaulting inmates were discussed. Those inmates were moved into protective custody by sheriff’s deputies.

Two suspects were arrested at their homes – Jose De Jesus Rivera, 33, of Compton, and Daniel Bustamante, 29, of Long Beach.

The remaining 12 were already incarcerated: Daniel Ramos, 31; Miguel Garcia, 33; James Piano, 41; Victor Hernandez, 40; Willam Membreno, 30; Eyreick Arballo, 33; Edgardo Moreno, 40; Miguel Arciniega, 20; Sergio Chavez, 20; Jose Salazar, 28; Greg Gonzalez, 30; and Rene Arana, 31.

The release said state prosecutors have filed charges against the defendants.

Prada’s $185 Paper Clip Money Holder Draws Scorn

With a spare $185 laying around and a serious lack of creativity, anyone can waltz into Office Depot and drop some cash on 13,300 paper clips.

For anyone who doesn’t want to saunter into work and make it rain paper clips like the patron saint of office supplies, you can spend that same money on just one.

Prada created a sterling silver “paperclip-shaped” money clip, which Barney’s is selling for $185. At 6.25 centimeters long and 2.25 centimeters wide, Prada’s magnum opus clocks in at just over $13 per square centimeter.

Unsurprisingly, people on Twitter were less than impressed.

“$185 for a paperclip? This thing better be able to hold my life together,” one user tweeted.

The clip is really only useful if you regularly carry at least $186 in cash. As another Twitter user noted, “By the time I buy the paperclip, there won’t be enough for it to hold.”

If your need to treat yourself is limited by your budget, Barney’s sells two variations for $150.

The Prada paper clip is just the latest addition to a long line of unnecessarily expensive items from elite designers.

A blue tote bag from Balenciaga went on sale earlier this year for $2,145 — over 2,145 times the cost of Ikea’s original 99-cent bag that looked strikingly similar. And in December, Nordstrom sold out of a leather-wrapped rock — literally a rock — priced at $85.

But if you’re still planning to blow your paycheck on the clip, don’t fret: “Prada” is engraved on one side, so no one will mistake the $185 investment for its one-cent counterpart.

In Shift After Delays in Congress, Trump Calls for Immediate ‘Repeal’ of Obamacare

Watch Video

President Donald Trump on Friday called for repealing the Affordable Care Act immediately and replacing it later with another health care plan if Republican senators are unable to pass their bill.

“If Republican Senators are unable to pass what they are working on now, they should immediately REPEAL, and then REPLACE at a later date,” tweeted Trump.

Trump’s declaration — which marks a political shift for him and could further imperil delicate negotiations on Capitol Hill — came shortly after Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Nebraska, urged the President in a letter to repeal Obamacare now and replace later. The current Republican plan in Congress is to do both in one massive piece of legislation, though the Senate’s bill has struggled to gain necessary GOP support.

“On July 10, if we don’t have agreement on a combined repeal and replace plan, we should immediately vote again on H.R. 3762, the December 2015 ObamaCare repeal legislation that the Congress passed but President Obama vetoed,” Sasse wrote in the letter. “We should include a year-long implementation delay to give comfort to Americans currently on ObamaCare that a replacement plan will be enacted before expiration.”

A Senate aide told CNN that Sasse’s team and the White House had been privately discussing getting the President to publicly support a straight repeal bill. Once the two sides became confident that Trump was interested, they drafted Sasse’s letter and arranged for him to appear on Fox News Friday morning to call for such a plan.

Sasse quickly approved of Trump’s tweet.

“Sounds great, Pres. @realDonaldTrump We are agreed. We need to break the logjam,” he tweeted.

Trump’s message Friday morning also marked a notable return to his efforts to push his agenda rather than distract from it, as he did on Thursday when he viciously and personally attacked MSNBC anchor Mika Brzezinski.

Trump was criticized heavily on both sides of the aisle for the outburst, with Sasse saying the tweets were “beneath the dignity” of his office.

A ‘hand grenade’ in negotiations?

Trump’s tweet is a new stance for him regarding health care.

Days after being elected, he told CBS’s Lesley Stahl on “60 Minutes” that “It’ll be repeal and replace. It will be essentially, simultaneously. It will be various segments, you understand, but will most likely be on the same day or the same week, but probably, the same day, could be the same hour.”

Trump reiterated that position at a news conference as President-elect back in January.

“We’re going to do it simultaneously. It’ll be just fine. We’re not going to have, like, a two-day period and we’re not going to have a two-year period where there’s nothing. It will be repealed and replaced.”

The President’s tweet also could have the effect of further complicating health care negotiations. A GOP official close to leadership and supportive of the current repeal/replace effort told CNN: “Nothing like rolling a hand grenade into ongoing negotiations, eh?”

The concern, the official outlined, is that this now gives conservatives a reason to go back to their corner. While they were hardly at the breakthrough point, there’s no question conservatives, particularly Sen. Ted Cruz, had been working in good faith to get to a deal.

Now the concern is conservatives can just say they wanted the 2015 repeal bill all along, and because the President clearly supports that plan, talks on a sweeping replacement plan can be scrapped.

A GOP Senate aide noted Trump’s initial opposition to a straight repeal bill.

“We did this dance six months ago. We’ve litigated repeal, delay, replace. Thoroughly. The President spoke against it. This all might be more helpful if we weren’t in the late stages of negotiations,” the aide said.

Appearing on CNN’s “New Day” Friday, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Illinois, also rejected the President’s suggestion.

“I think it’s repeal and replace,” he told CNN’s Chris Cuomo. “We can argue whether they like the system we’re bringing them in or not, but simply a repeal, even with the sunset the year or two down the road — the problem (is) we know how Washington works.”

He explained: “Sometimes on deadlines we still don’t get things done. You can’t leave the American people out like this. This is how sequester happened, because we thought we could fix the problem and never did.”

‘Big surprise’

Earlier this year, Hill Republican leaders floated the idea of repealing Obamacare and providing a transition period during which Congress would write a new law. But many Republicans opposed that idea, and along with Trump calling for passing both simultaneously, the party shifted tactics.

One reason behind that shift is repealing Obamacare without an immediate replacement plan would likely cause massive destabilization to an insurance market already unnerved by Washington’s efforts to address health care. Many insurers are asking for another round of steep rate increases for 2018, and others aren’t even willing to return to the exchanges at all.

But some companies say the market is stabilizing, so they plan to stay in the game and charge only a little bit more next year.

The Affordable Care Act was troubled even before Trump took office, but the Republicans’ quest to dismantle it has made things worse. Trump has caused confusion about whether he’ll continue key components of the law. The two at the top of the list: the mandate that everyone have insurance and the cost-sharing subsidies for lower-income Americans.

Polling shows repealing Obamacare outright was the least popular option as House Republicans began negotiating on health care. According to a March CNN/ORC survey, just 17% of Americans favored repealing parts of the bill as opportunities arose, regardless of whether a replacement was ready, including only 26% of Republicans.

Meanwhile, the future of the GOP health care efforts remains unclear. Senate Republican leaders scuttled plans for a vote on health care reform earlier this week as GOP leaders criticized the bill, but Trump was optimistic in his outlook Wednesday.

“We’re going to have a big surprise,” Trump said during a brief photo opportunity with reporters as he welcomed the World Series-winning Chicago Cubs at the White House. “We’re going to have a great, great surprise.”

Trump declined to say what the surprise would be, but his optimism contrasted significantly with the nine Republican senators publicly expressing their opposition to the bill the President is championing.

The White House can only afford to lose two of the 52 Republicans in the Senate to pass the legislation.

‘Donald Trump Is Not Well,’ ‘Morning Joe’ Co-Hosts Say in Response to President Trump’s Tweets

Watch Video

One day after being attacked by President Trump, Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough are trying to turn the national conversation around, making it about the president’s “erratic behavior” and his emotional health.

“We’re OK. The country is not,” Scarborough said on Friday’s “Morning Joe” on MSNBC.

Brzezinski said Trump’s behavior was “frightening and really sad for our country.”

Scarborough said the president has a “disturbing obsession with Mika.”

“He attacks women because he fears women,” Scarborough said.

One of their guests, advertising executive Donny Deutsch, said the president is “not of sound mind.”

Summing up the tone of the discussion, Brzezinski said, “I’m really worried.”

“Morning Joe” hosts and guests have repeatedly raised questions about the president’s mental state and his fitness for the job.

Brzezinski and Scarborough returned to that theme on Friday with a Washington Post column titled “Donald Trump is not well.”

“President Trump launched personal attacks against us Thursday, but our concerns about his unmoored behavior go far beyond the personal,” the pair wrote in the column. “America’s leaders and allies are asking themselves yet again whether this man is fit to be president. We have our doubts, but we are both certain that the man is not mentally equipped to continue watching our show, ‘Morning Joe.'”

Brzezinski and Scarborough quipped that Trump should exclusively watch the pro-Trump morning show “Fox & Friends.”

The president claims not to watch “Morning Joe,” but Brzezinski and Scarborough don’t believe him. (Indeed, there is ample evidence that the president spends a lot of time watching lots of morning TV shows.)

Observers speculated that the president’s nasty tweets on Thursday morning were a reaction to Brzezinski and Scarborough’s intense criticism of him.

They asserted that “the president’s unhealthy obsession with ‘Morning Joe’ does not serve the best interests of either his mental state or the country he runs.” They also said they have “noticed a change in his behavior over the past few years.”

Scarborough usually writes a Friday column for the Post. With Trump’s tweets taking over the news cycle on Thursday, he decided to co-author it with Brzezinski, his fiancee and co-host.

The pair made the point that Trump’s insults were not only offensive, they were factually inaccurate.

Trump said the pair “came to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year’s Eve, and insisted on joining me.”

“That is false,” Brzezinski and Scarborough said in Friday’s column.

Trump also said “she was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!”

Photos of Brzezinski at Mar-a-Lago contradict this.

“Putting aside Mr. Trump’s never-ending obsession with women’s blood, Mika and her face were perfectly intact, as pictures from that night reveal,” they said in the column. “And though it is no one’s business, the president’s petulant personal attack against yet another woman’s looks compels us to report that Mika has never had a face-lift. If she had, it would be evident to anyone watching ‘Morning Joe’ on their high-definition TV. She did have a little skin under her chin tweaked, but this was hardly a state secret. Her mother suggested she do so, and all those around her were aware of this mundane fact.”

With regard to the New Year’s Eve visit, which was reported at the time, Brzezinski and Scarborough asserted that Trump was actually wooing them, trying to get the hosts to come visit him, not the other way around.

Time Capsule Discovered Inside Confederate Memorial in St. Louis

A time capsule was recovered Thursday from the controversial Confederate Memorial at Forest Park in St. Louis.

The monument has since been removed and sits in storage at an undisclosed location. Thursday was the final phase of deconstruction, which included the search for the time capsule, sealed in the monument more than a century ago.

And after more than 102 years, it was out of the darkness and back into the light of day.

“As we were jackhammering around, we vibrated it. It popped loose,” Mark Trout, director of the Missouri Civil War Museum, told Fox2Now.

Trout said they found a concrete tablet covering a small underground pit in the monument’s foundation. The pit contained the time capsule.

“It was like Indiana Jones. Lifted it up and there was the box,” he said.

It was waterlogged but still sealed, Trout said.

The museum took the City of St. Louis to court to stop its demolition of the monument. The two sides then struck a deal calling for its removal and reconstruction at a battlefield, cemetery, or civil war museum outside of St. Louis city and county.

The memorial had been the target of vandalism in recent years. Critics saw its placement in a public place like Forest Park as an acceptance of racism. Debate aside there will be great interest in what’s in the box.

Archives show it contains documents from the Daughters of the Confederacy, which turned over ownership of the monument to the museum. Archives also show it contains at least one other item.

“We know the last thing put in the box was a magazine placed in there by one of the soldiers of General Pickett’s (Confederate) division at Gettysburg; the famous ‘Pickett’s Charge’,” Trout said. “He held it up at the ceremony saying, ‘Hey look, we’re in the magazine. Put this in the box.’ When we open that box the first thing laying on top should be the ‘Star’ magazine that the soldier placed there.”

There may also be war medals and perhaps something to mark the controversy that has shadowed the monument from its construction and dedication in 1914.

Opponents then didn’t want it in Forest Park either but took the high ground:

“Their exact words were, ‘Let them build them as wide as they want, as deep as they want, and as tall as they want. They will stand as milestones to see how great the Republic has come from the dark days of civil war,’” Trout said. “Those were the men who fought these men and they had that take on it.”

The time capsule will be unsealed privately in the coming days, Trout said, with the contents being revealed at a fundraiser for the Missouri Civil War Museum preservation fund.

Vinyl Comeback: Sony to Produce Records Again After 28-Year Break

One of the world’s biggest record labels is going retro.

Sony Music Entertainment said this week it will begin pressing vinyl records again, ending an almost three-decade hiatus.

A dramatic increase in demand for vinyl music in recent years prompted the move, a Sony spokeswoman said. Interest is coming from younger customers who have never used records before as well as older fans, she added.

Sony — whose artists include Adele, Beyoncé and Daft Punk — ended production of vinyl in 1989 after CDs cornered the market.

But despite the current popularity of digital music services like Spotify, old school records are enjoying a renaissance. Consulting firm Deloitte forecasts the vinyl music industry will post double-digit growth in 2017 for the seventh year in a row, selling 40 million new discs and generating as much as $900 million in revenue.

Vinyl could account for up to 18% of all physical music revenue this year, which is likely to top $5 billion, Deloitte said in a recent report. Turntables and other vinyl-related accessories are also benefiting as a result.

Sony and Panasonic both introduced new record player models last year to cash in.

Sony said it will resume vinyl production by March next year in a factory southwest of Tokyo that’s run by one of its subsidiaries. It still hasn’t yet decided which genres of music it will produce, according to the spokeswoman.

The firm installed an analog record-cutting machine in February, which makes master copies of records for mass production, and is now introducing a pressing machine, she said.

Sony’s biggest challenge is the lack of engineers experienced in making records. Former engineers are returning to the company in advisory roles to pass on their expertise to younger employees, the spokeswoman added.

Even though vinyl has made a big comeback, its sales will still be dwarfed by those of other formats like digital music and CDs, according to Deloitte.

And vinyl revenue forecasts are still a long way off their peak in the late 70s and early 80s, when more than half a billion records were sold annually in the U.S. alone.

Teen Birth Rate Drops to All-Time Low in U.S.

In the United States, teen-aged moms are increasingly rare. In 2016, the teen birth rate dropped 9% compared to the previous year, a new government report published Friday found. This record low for teens having babies continues a long-term trend.

Pictured are a selection of condoms March 12, 2004, in Boston, Massachusetts. (Credit: William B. Plowman/Getty Images)

The birth rate among teen girls has dropped 67% since 1991, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, which presented preliminary data for 2016 based on a majority (99.9%) of births.

In 2016, the number of US births totaled 3,941,109, a decline of 1% compared to 2015. The fertility rate of 62 births per 1,000 women is a record low for the nation.

The teen rate is a “phenomenal decline,” said Dr. Elise Berlan, a physician in the section of adolescent medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Berlan, who did not conduct this research, said the reason she’s so excited is “because we know that the vast majority of teen births are unintended.”

What’s fueling the declines?

“Data [from previous years] really suggests it is access to contraceptives and use of contraceptives that has really led to these kind of changes,” said Berlan, who noted that “most teens are using some form of birth control” and the top method is “the condom, followed by withdrawal and the pill.”

Older moms

On the flip side, the increase in births to older moms is also important, said Martin.

For women between the ages of 30 and 34, the birth rate increased by 1% over 2015 — the highest rate for this age group since 1964. The birth rate for women who are between 35 and 39 is up 2% over 2015, representing the highest rate since 1962.

Even older women, those between the ages of 40 and 44, showed a swelling increase of 4% over 2015 — the highest rate for this group since 1966, according to the statisticians, while the rate of birth for women who are older than 45 is also a record high though the number of births remains essentially unchanged compared to last year.

Joyce A. Martin, a co-author of the report and lead statistician, also noted the declining rate of nonmarital births — births to people who aren’t legally married — in 2016, which fell 3% compared to the previous year.

The report, first in a new annual series, provided additional vital statistics.

Prenatal care

Three out of four woman got prenatal care in their first trimester, noted Michelle J.K. Osterman, a co-author of the report and statistician. That said, 6.2% of pregnant women in 2016 had late prenatal care (beginning in the third trimester) or no prenatal care.

“In a perfect world, every woman would get early prenatal care,” said Osterman. She noted that “2016 is the first year for which we have national data” measuring prenatal care, so there can be no comparisons to previous years.

The percentage of women receiving prenatal care beginning in the first trimester of pregnancy ranged from 51.9% for non-Hispanic native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders women to 82.3% for non-Hispanic white women. Nearly 81% of Asian women also received prenatal care, while 72% of Hispanic and 67% of non-Hispanic black women did the same.

“We want to bring everybody up to an overall rate of over 80%,” said Martin.

Sarah Verbiest, executive director of the Center for Maternal & Infant Health in the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, noted the “inequities among who is getting early access to care” during pregnancy. Verbiest was not involved in the research.

“We know that the growth of the baby happens really fast, really soon. So in the first nine weeks, all of the key parts of the baby are formed,” said Verbiest. Prenatal care in the first trimester helps a pregnant woman learn what changes to expect and address any unhealthy factors in her life.

“If someone has diabetes and it’s not really well-controlled that could lead to birth defects,” said Verbiest. “Right away, you want to be helping her manage diabetes or any chronic conditions.”

Pregnant women also need to be taking vitamins while eating and exercising in healthy ways. Prenatal care helps reduce all potential risks as early as possible and leads to healthier babies, explained Verbiest.

Shift in preterm births

“For many years in this field we saw that women who are Hispanic had really good birth outcomes — even in the face of some more challenges in terms of accessing care,” said Verbiest. “We always said, ‘Thank heavens for that.'”

However, the new data suggests there may be a shift.

For example, the overall rate of low birthweight rose for the second straight year to 8.2% in 2016 from 8.1% in 2015. The rate among Hispanic woman was 7.3% compared to about 6.9% for white women.

Verbiest worries that Hispanic women may be adopting some of the “not healthy habits in this country,” including unhealthy eating and lifestyle, while also being affected by “community stress that isn’t good for pregnant women.”

This is the second year in a row for an undesirable rate of low birth weights, noted Verbiest.

“It’s not the direction we want it to go,” said Verbiest. “We know that the outcomes for babies who are too thin and too small are not as good — they start life out like a step behind” children who are born at a normal weight at full-term, about nine months.

The preterm birth rate — when a baby is born more than three weeks before a full nine month pregnancy — also rose for American women overall. Preterm births can lead to poor health for babies.

Martin said the increase in the preterm birth rate was not a “small one — a 2% rise is fairly substantial. At a minimum, it tells us the improvements that have been going on for the last decade [appear] to have stalled.”

On the positive side, Verbiest celebrated the declining rate of cesarean births noted in the report.

The rate of C-sections decreased for the fourth year in a row to about 32%, having peaked in 2009 at about 33%.

“That is the result of work across all kinds of partners in this country,” said Verbiest. Patient advocate groups, payers such as insurance companies and Medicaid, nurses, physicians, and midwives all have worked hard to bring that trend line down, she said.

Access to care

Both Verbiest and Berlan see access to health care as crucial to achieving the best results for women’s health, particularly pregnancy and birth.

“Putting restrictions on teens’ access to birth control could really have some profound effects on unintended births in those folks,” said Berlan. The hospital where she works requires parental consent for teen patients since her home state of Ohio lacks a statute protecting a minor’s right to access contraception confidentially.

“We certainly see teen girls and young women coming to the office with their parents. And that’s really just a wonderful thing to work with a mom-daughter [pair] on these important decisions,” said Berlan.

“The other side of it, though, is a lot of teens need confidential access to birth control and it’s important to preserve that,” said Berlan.

The “significant differences in how babies are getting a start in life” speaks to “larger issues,” such as health care access, that need to be dealt with by our society, said Verbiest. “All of our sweet babies and families should get to have the best start.”

How to Use Google’s New Job Search Tool to Find Work

Google has a new search function called “Google for Jobs” – here’s how to use it to find your next gig.

Google is working on organizing the world’s information and now the search giant has set their sights on jobs. Existing job search sites can be disorganized, have out of date listings and lots of duplicates. Google for Jobs is not a new job website but more of a way to find jobs using Google’s amazing search capabilities. Here’s how.

Follow KTLA Tech Reporter Rich DeMuro on Facebook or Twitter for cool apps, tech tricks & tips!

What Google is Doing

As Google scours the web, they come across millions of job listings from various sources – companies, job search sites, social media and more. Google for Jobs takes this information and attempts to index it in a way that organizes jobs into the proper categories, weeds out duplicates and makes sure listings are fresh.

How to Access Google for Jobs

To start, just search for some combination of the term “job” on Google. That’s about it. Your search term can be very generic, like “jobs near me” or more specific like “retail jobs near me.” You will know when you’ve hit upon the right results when you see a box with a blue stripe along the top. Expand the box at the bottom to enter the full Google for Jobs search experience.

Tweak Your Search Terms

From here you can modify your job search terms completely. You might even notice when you click in the box that Google is pre-populating it with suggested jobs types for you. Google is using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to help match you up with the perfect job. Once you are searching for the appropriate job type you can narrow down your search using the filters including Category, Title, Date posted, City, and Company type. You can also specify whether you want a full time job, part time job, internship, contract work and more.

The Results

The job listings you see are pulled from various sources, and in some cases Google is piecing together various bits of information from all over the web. For instance, you’ll see how long ago a job was posted, a description, reviews of the company and more. In some cases you’ll even see an estimated commute time for the job. When you’re ready to apply, hit the big red button. It will take you to the best site to apply for the job, and it’s clearly labeled on the button.

Landing the Perfect Gig

Google is working with various partners including LinkedIn, Monster, CareerBuilder, Glassdoor, and Facebook. Basically, everyone realizes that the easier jobs are to find and the more qualified individuals get pushed to listings, the better it is for everyone. Once you’ve honed your search, don’t forget to toggle the option to get job alerts for your job search. This way, Google will immediately notify you of fresh new matching jobs.

Good luck!
