William Christopher, Father Mulcahy on ‘MASH,’ Dies at 84

William Christopher, the actor best known for playing Father Francis Mulcahy on the hit series “MASH,” has died at 84 in his Pasadena home, according to media reports.

Christopher began his acting career in New York City in several off-Broadway productions that eventually led to Broadway shows.

But it was “MASH” that made Christopher famous. A Methodist off-camera, he played the kindly Catholic priest in more than 200 episodes of the smash series, from 1972 to 1983.

Christopher also appeared in the short-lived spinoff “After MASH.”

Latino Leaders Ask: When Will Trump Reach Out to Hispanics?

Latino leaders around the country say they want to keep an open mind about Donald Trump’s presidency, but less than one month before Inauguration Day, many are disappointed he has not done more to reach out to them.

Since his election, Trump has sat down with the likes of tech industry tycoons, football heroes and even Kanye West.

But Latino leaders say there’s an urgent need for Trump to engage with the Hispanic community following a wrenching campaign in which he harshly singled out Mexican immigrants and called for tough immigration laws. The president-elect has not met with Latino organization leaders in any official capacity since winning the election, based on a review of his public meeting schedule.

It’s a conspicuous snub considering Trump’s campaign rhetoric. He opened his White House bid in June 2015 by infamously labeling some Mexican immigrants as “rapists” and accusing them of bringing drugs and crime into the U.S. He also pledged to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, end birthright citizenship and deport all of the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country, though he has since backed away from several of those stances.

“It is unacceptable that he has yet to build a relationship with Latino and Muslim communities that he has targeted the most throughout his campaign,” said Hector Sanchez, the chairman of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda. “Communities that are now suffering because of the things he said.”

Brent Wilkes, the national executive director of the League of United Latin American Citizens, the oldest Hispanic civil rights organization in the U.S., said that it is unprecedented that the organization has still not heard from the President-elect.

“We have always had Democratic and Republican presidents speak to us. Him not speaking to the Latino community is dividing this country,” Wilkes said.

Asked about whether Trump plans on reaching out to the Hispanic community, Hope Hicks, a transition spokeswoman, said Trump “will be a president for all Americans and will continue to reach out to specific groups and individuals as his Cabinet takes shape and he begins to execute plans for his first 100 days in office.”

But Wilkes said a lack of Latino representation in Trump’s Cabinet is another issue that concerns the Hispanic community. As it currently stands, with all but two of his Cabinet picks made, Trump could be the first president in more than 24 years to not have someone of Latino heritage serve in his Cabinet.

LULAC says the Trump transition team has not returned its phone calls. Michael Cohen, a top adviser to Trump though he is not a member of the transition team, told CNN that it’s possible LULAC didn’t reach the right people inside the transition, and were they to contact him, he would answer their calls.

Cohen also insisted that Trump’s transition team is making an effort to reach out to Hispanic groups, but he was unable to provide information on which groups the transition team has met with. He also said Trump has future plans to reach out to the Latino community, but he did not provide details.

“President-elect Trump doesn’t forget the groups that came out to support him,” Cohen said. “And he does have plans to speak to the Latino community once he officially becomes president.”

Javier Palomarez, the president and CEO of United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce — which endorsed Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton, over the summer — said he speaks daily with Cohen. He acknowledged that the chamber “might not agree on everything” with Trump but has a shared stake in growing the U.S. economy.

And there were a handful of Latinos present for a Nov. 20 meeting in which Republican officials and what NBC News referred to as “Trump insiders” sat down in Washington with leaders from African-American, Latino, Asian and Native American organizations.

But Janet Murguía, the president and CEO of the National Council of La Raza, the nation’s largest Latino advocacy organization, said at a news conference in late November that Trump “needs to reassure, or at the very least, address the fears of the communities of which he will now be president.”

She added: “President-elect Trump, we need you to protect and defend all Americans and condemn the violence and hate being committed in your name.”

Asked about racial tensions in the wake of his election, Trump told CBS News he was “so saddened” to hear about threats and slurs hurled by some of his supporters against minorities.

“If it helps, I will say this, and I will say right to the cameras: Stop it,” Trump told CBS’ “60 Minutes.”

But there’s more the president-elect can do to heal the country and reassure anxious Latinos about their place in Trump’s America, Sanchez said.

“I am still hoping one day that we will have an open dialogue with the president-elect,” he said. “We need to make sure that our voices are still heard and not forgotten in this new administration.”

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Accused of Having Sex With Teen Girl in Explorer Program

A 14-year veteran of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has been arrested and booked on suspicion of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a teenage girl participating in the department’s youth Explorer program, authorities said.

police-lightsDeputy David Israel Ceballos, 34, was arrested Friday evening and his bail was set at $100,000. He is accused of unlawful intercourse and sexual penetration with a foreign object on a minor, the sheriff’s department said in a statement.

Authorities say Ceballos developed an “off-duty sexual relationship” with a 17-year-old girl who was a scout in the Explorer program. The department-run program is meant, in part, to educate youth who are interested in law enforcement careers.

The alleged victim, who authorities said is now 18, met Ceballos during an Explorer event in the middle of 2016. Ceballos had held the position of “Explorer coordinator” at the Fontana sheriff’s station, but investigators determined that the girl’s Explorer group had not been paired with that station.

Former Student Indicted for Murdering His Ex-Teacher and Their 4-Year-Old Son in Manhattan Apartment

A 23-year-old man who as a high school student fathered a child with his teacher has been indicted on two counts of murder after his former lover and their son were found dead, according to a Manhattan district attorney spokesman.

The bodies of Felicia Barahona, 36, and her 4-year-old son, Miguel, were found Monday in Barahona’s upper Manhattan apartment.

Barahona, unconscious and unresponsive on her living room floor, had a telephone cord wrapped around her neck. The child was discovered underwater in a bathtub. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Isaac Duran Infante, whose relationship with Barahona five years ago while he was a student and she was a teacher led to her being fired, was arrested Tuesday.

“He admitted to us he went there because of that, to end the life of Felicia Barahona,” Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce told reporters Wednesday, referring to the suspect. “While he was there he decided to kill his son as well.”

Infante told police he felt antagonized by Barahona, who he said dressed the child in girls’ clothing, Boyce said. Another possible motive involved “monetary issues,” according to Boyce.

He had been arraigned Wednesday without entering a plea and was ordered held without bail, said his lawyer, Allen Farbman.

Barahona died from strangulation and Miguel of asphyxia, according to Julie Bolcer of the New York chief medical examiner’s office.

A 911 call from the building superintendent brought police to the apartment Monday.

The tragedy came more than four years after Barahona’s dismissal, after her relationship with Infante was discovered.

DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx terminated her teaching position in 2012, saying she had invited a high school student to her home multiple times since late 2011. The sexual relationship with the student resulted in her pregnancy, a Special Commissioner of Investigation for the New York City School District (SCI) report shows.

The SCI report, released in 2012, never identified the student by name. Police investigators this week confirmed that Infante was the student and the father of Barahona’s child.

The 2012 report stated that teacher and student had sexual encounters about five times a week and the student eventually moved in with her in January 2012. The report was specific in its details: “When he tried to use a condom, Barahona told him that she did not like condoms and not to worry,” it said.

The SCI report also said Barahona planned to marry him and had bought wedding rings before they ended the relationship.

The report mentions Barahona had a younger daughter when she met Infante. According to the report, he did “not get along” with her daughter, one of the reasons for their breakup. Other reasons included Infante drinking alcohol in Barahona’s apartment and his intentions to take the baby he had fathered to visit his family, according to the report.

Police Searching for Remains of Passengers in Small Plane Crash Near Lake Erie

Police announced Saturday they would begin a new search and recovery operation for the remains of the passengers from a small plane believed to have crashed in Lake Erie Thursday night.

During a press conference on Saturday, officials said investigators will build a grid and identify the plane’s last communication. A team of divers and marine experts will extract the remains.

The plane was registered to a beverage company executive and is based at Ohio State University Airport, the airport’s director told CNN Friday.

The executive’s father, John W. Fleming, told the Columbus Dispatch that his son, John T. Fleming, was at the controls of the Cessna that went missing Thursday night after the pilot, his family and friends attended a Cleveland Cavaliers basketball game.

“The airplane is based at our airport, it left from the airport and it did not come home last night,” Doug Hammon, the airport’s director, said Friday.

Also on board the plane were Fleming’s wife, Suzanne Fleming, 46, their two sons, John Robert, 15, and Andrew Thomas, 14, a neighbor and a neighbor’s daughter, the pilot’s father told the newspaper.

John T. Fleming, an experienced pilot, was taking his family and neighbors to the Cavaliers game as a treat for the holidays, according to his father.

Fleming is president and CEO of Superior Beverage Group, according to his LinkedIn page.

The US Coast Guard and its Canadian counterpart searched the lake Friday, but the mission was suspended at 7:30 p.m., spokeswoman Katelyn Waddle said.

Three adults and three children were on board the aircraft, US Coast Guard Captain Michael Mullen told reporters Friday.

“At this point we believe it’s [members of] two families,” Mullen said of the missing.

The last radar contact with the plane came as it flew about two miles north of the Cleveland’s Burke Lakefront Airport, where it took off, according to Mullen.

The twin-engine Cessna Citation 525 was headed for the university airport in Columbus, Ohio, when it disappeared from radar, a Coast Guard statement said.

“The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter from air station Detroit,” the statement said, adding that it had partnered with the Royal Canadian Air Force, which sent a C-130 plane down to assist in the search.

Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay is also on its way from Detroit to help, the Coast Guard said.

The search operation was made “very difficult” by 12- to 15-foot waves on Lake Erie, the Coast Guard said.

Air traffic control reported to the Coast Guard at about 11:30 p.m. on Thursday that the plane had just taken off from Burke Lakefront Airport in downtown Cleveland and “dropped off radar about two miles when it was over Lake Erie,” Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher Yaw told CNN.

The missing Cessna has room for up to 11 people, but the plane’s flight plan indicates it had six people on board, Yaw said.

Ohio State University Airport, where the plane was headed, is certified for commercial service and serves as a research and teaching facility. The airport is owned and operated by the Ohio State College of Engineering, according to its website.

Vermont Electric Company Finds Alleged Russian Malware on Computer

A Vermont electric company said Friday it had found on a company laptop the same kind of malicious software that US authorities believe was used by Russian hackers in an attempt to influence November’s election.

Burlington Electric said it found the code after utility companies nationwide were sent an alert by the Department of Homeland Security.

The company, which serves 19,600 customers in Vermont, said the malware was on a laptop that is not connected to the organization’s power grid systems.

“Our team is working with federal officials to trace this malware and prevent any other attempts to infiltrate utility systems,” spokesman Mike Kanarick said.

The federal government refers to the malicious cyber activity as Grizzly Steppe.

Gov. Shumlin calls Putin a “thug”

Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin didn’t hold back in a scathing message issued Friday that linked Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to the cyber threat.

“Vermonters and all Americans should be both alarmed and outraged that one of the world’s leading thugs, Vladimir Putin, has been attempting to hack our electric grid, which we rely upon to support our quality-of-life, economy, health, and safety,” said Shumlin in a written statement.

Shumlin, a Democrat, called on the federal government to investigate and take action to prevent future attacks.

“This episode should highlight the urgent need for our federal government to vigorously pursue and put an end to this sort of Russian meddling,” said Shumlin.

US Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, said he and his staff were briefed on Friday by Vermont state police about the development, which he called a “direct threat to Vermont.”

“State-sponsored Russian hacking is a serious threat, and the attempts to penetrate the electric grid through a Vermont utility are the latest example,” Leahy said.

“This is beyond hackers having electronic joyrides — this is now about trying to access utilities to potentially manipulate the grid and shut it down in the middle of winter.”

After weeks of ramped-up accusations about Russian hacking around the US election, the White House announced plans Thursday to expel 35 Russian diplomats — giving them and their families 72 hours to leave the country — and shuttering a pair of Russian compounds in New York and Maryland used by officials, in theory, for recreational purposes.

The Russian government has denied the hacking allegations.

DHS and FBI made a 13-page report public Thursday with information about the malware code — which was found on Democratic National Committee computers — and urged entities to check for it.

Targets? ‘Government, think tanks, universities’

Homeland Security spokesman Todd Breasseale said Friday that the hackers went after “government organizations, critical infrastructure entities, think tanks, universities, political organizations, and corporations.”

The hackers sent fake emails, texts and other messages attempting to get US users to click on malicious links, US officials have said. Some links led users to download the malware while others prompted people to change their passwords, which the hackers could then use.

A US official who wanted to remain anonymous told CNN that the Obama administration sought to alert utilities and other entities in the United States and abroad to the malicious activity so they could better secure their networks.

In December 2015, Ukraine was struck by a massive cyberattack that cut power to 103 cities and towns and affected 186 more. The attack involved a team of sophisticated hackers who targeted six power companies at the same time, US officials briefed on an investigation into the attack told CNN in February.

Destructive malware wrecked computers and wiped out sensitive control systems for parts of the Ukraine power grid, making it more difficult for technicians to restore power.

The attack raised major concerns because the U.S. power grid and other major industrial facilities have many of the same vulnerabilities that were exploited in the Ukraine attack, U.S. officials told CNN.

In February, Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, the Obama administration’s deputy energy secretary, accused Russia of being behind the cyberattack.

Other top US intelligence and security officials said then that the evidence wasn’t conclusive enough to tie the Russian government to the attack.

The vandal or vandals drew the swastika symbol with the arms facing the wrong direction, said Lt. James Reifschneider, a spokesman for the Palo Alto Police Department. The swastikas drawn were more similar to the symbol for peace commonly associated with Buddhism and Hinduism, he said.

“We’re assuming that our vandal was misinformed and was a bit lazy in drawing his graffiti,” Reifschneider said. “We believe he intended to make an anti-semitic reference as opposed to a Buddhist reference.”

The swastikas appeared on signs of two law firms on Page Mill Road, as well as city signs at three intersections along Stanford Avenue, said Reifschneider. Another swastika was discovered on a grocery store in downtown Palo Alto a few miles away on Friday.

Greek Ambassador to Brazil Killed; Widow and Her ‘Lover’ Questioned: Authorities

Brazilian police are questioning the widow of the Greek ambassador to that country, along with a military police officer described as her lover and another man in the death of the diplomat, authorities said Friday.

Ambassador Kyriakos Amiridis, 59, had been missing since Monday, Evaristo Pontes Magalhaes, a police investigator in the Baixada Fluminense state, said Friday at a news conference. A burned car with a charred body inside was found in Nova Iguaçu, a town outside Rio de Janeiro, on Thursday and the body was identified as Amiridis on Friday, he said.

Being questioned in the killing are the widow, Francoise De Souza Oliveira; military police officer Sergio Gomes Moreira Filho; and the officer’s cousin, Eduardo Moreira de Melo, Pontes said.

Pontes said investigators think Francoise De Souza Oliveira ordered the killing. No charges have been filed.

“It was a crime of passion committed by Ms. Francoise and the military policeman,” Pontes said.

“They were in a romantic relationship between them,” Pontes said. “She only told us that her lover — let’s call him that — the military policeman, was the author of the crime, executed this crime against her husband. She denies taking part.”

Citing police, the state-run news agency Agencia Brasil reported the officer killed Amiridis inside the ambassador’s home in Nova Iguaçu. With the help of the officer’s cousin, the officer wrapped the body in carpet and put it inside a car, Agencia Brasil reported.

Pontes said the cousin told police Sergio Gomes Moreira Filho offered “to pay him 80,000 reals (about $24,574) 30 days after the crime, a period after which they thought there wouldn’t be any more problems.”

“All are under temporary arrest for 30 days for the ambassador’s death,” Pontes said. ” As we said before, this was a tragic, cowardly act.”

Amiridis had lived in Brasilia, the capital, since being appointed ambassador in January but usually spent holidays in the house outside Rio, where he was consul-general from 2001 to 2004, Agencia Brasil said.

The news agency said Francoise De Souza Oliveira was Brazilian.

Speaking to reporters outside the police station, Francisco Oliveira, the widow’s brother, said the couple “did not fight,” reported Agence France-Presse (AFP).

“For me it’s like a dream,” said Rosangela Oliveira, her mother. “I’ll wake up and nothing will have happened.”

Brazilian President Michel Temer’s office issued this statement: “In this moment of pain and sorrow, I offer, on behalf of the Brazilians, my condolences and solidarity to the government and people of Greece, in particular to the families and people close to Ambassador Amiridis.”

The statement says Brazilian authorities will investigate the incident thoroughly.

“The Brazilian government reaffirms its willingness to collaborate actively with the Greek side, as it has done from the beginning,” the statement said.

Greece’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing its “deepest sorrow” at the death of Amiridis.

“The late diplomat served at the Permanent Mission of Greece to the EU, at the General Consulates in Rio de Janeiro and Rotterdam and at the Greek Embassy in Belgrade during the first phase of the war in Yugoslavia,” the statement said.

NYC Issues First ‘Intersex’ Birth Certificate in US

For the first time in the United States, New York City issued a birth certificate reading “intersex” in the gender field.

On December 15, the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene corrected the original birth certificate of Sara Kelly Keenan, born in Brooklyn 55 years ago. She received it in the mail at her Santa Cruz, California, home on Tuesday.

“It was wonderful. It was the first time I saw ‘intersex’ in print related to my name,” said Keenan, an addiction life coach. “When I applied in court, I chose ‘non-binary,’ because that’s an umbrella term that would also include gender variant people.”

“A person may amend their birth certificate to have ‘intersex’ reflected on their birth certificate with appropriate documentary evidence from a US-licensed doctor,” said Julien A. Martinez, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. “The department will continue to work with community partners as we adopt changes to more accurately reflect a person’s sex.”

Though Keenan had requested a term not strictly based on medical evidence, she found the city’s correction “really validating.”

Ultimately, the term “intersex” “carries more personal significance to me than ‘non-binary,’ ” she said.

Gender issues

“Intersex” is a general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person’s anatomy doesn’t fit the typical definitions of female or male.

Keenan thinks of her story as “typical” for an intersex child, yet in an essential way, it is different from most: She was given up for adoption as an infant.

She was born to an unwed mother in a Brooklyn hospital, where she stayed for three weeks until she was transferred to a nearby orphanage, the Angel Guardian Home. Next, she was placed in foster care for five months and then adopted by a couple on Long Island. To this day, Keenan is unsure whether she underwent genital surgery during her first three weeks of life, as was typical for intersex children at that time, according to the Intersex Society of North America.

“I don’t know enough about what happened to me as an infant, because the medical records were tied up in a sealed adoption, and then the medical records at the hospital were destroyed in a fire in the ’70s,” she said.

What she does know: “Gender issues came up almost immediately.” At 3 or 4 years old, she realized that she was a girl, but “that wasn’t what I felt like. … I wanted to be a boy,” said Keenan. “A mistake had happened.”

As she grew older, she refused to wear dresses, asked to join the Boy Scouts and dropped out of the Girl Scouts.

“I felt comfortable at times in groups of boys but knew I was different. And I felt comfortable even less of the time in groups of girls but knew I was different from them,” Keenan said. “I never felt I belonged or fit in anywhere — but I looked like a little girl.”

Still, by ninth grade, she wasn’t showing signs of puberty.

“My body really became different physically from everyone else,” said Keenan, who described herself at that stage as “a 6-foot-tall naked 8-year-old girl. That was a real problem in high school.”

“I really hated my body. I hated my life. I felt cursed, and I felt like there was no hope for me,” she said, and she began to cut herself. “If I had not been raised Catholic and believed that hell was waiting for me if I killed myself, I probably would have ended my life as a teenager.”

A month after turning 16, she underwent an operation to address the fact that she hadn’t entered puberty. Surgeons removed “what they said were ovaries that would never develop,” Keenan explained, though it was actually testicular tissue that had grown where ovaries are located in females.

After the surgery, she started female hormone replacement therapy.

“They said I was 100% girl and I just couldn’t make hormones, and that was the second lie of my life, and that lie stood for 30 more years, until I was 49 or 50 years old and used the Internet and a visit to an endocrinologist to confirm the truth,” Keenan said.

‘Pushed down the female track’

The original “lie” of an intersex birth had been perpetrated by the hospital and the adoption agency without her adoptive parents’ knowledge or consent. However, this second lie relied on their participation, observed Keenan. Trying to learn why she was not developing normally, they had taken their 16-year-old daughter to a succession of doctors, who ordered various tests.

The results showed Keenan to be genetically male with female genitalia and mixed internal reproductive anatomy.

Keenan’s mother, who died of lung cancer just three years after her daughter’s surgery, probably knew this, she said. After all, her mother had contacted her aunt, who arrived at her mother’s bedside “24 hours too late to have my mother tell her what my mother knew and what she wanted the aunt to do for me in my life.”

Her father definitely knew about Keenan’s gender circumstance. Five years ago, he admitted to her that he’d been given the option for surgeons to construct a penis followed by male hormones as a way to allow Keenan to masculinize.

“His words were ‘hell, no, that’s my daughter. She’s a girl,’ ” Keenan said. “So I was just pushed down the female track and given female replacement hormones.”

Self-defining words

” ‘Intersex’ is an identity. So there is no definition of ‘intersex.’ It will vary from one person to another,” said Dr. Eric Vilain, a professor of human genetics, pediatrics and urology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. He explained that some transgender people identify as “intersex,” even though they were not born with atypical genitalia.

“But a significant number of people born with ambiguous genitalia reject the ‘intersex’ identity. It is not a clinical term,” Vilain wrote in an email. Among doctors and clinicians, it is referred to as Disorders/Differences of Sex Development, or DSD.

“The definition of DSD is ‘congenital conditions in which development of chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomical sex is atypical,’ ” said Vilain.

Keenan said the intersex community rejected the medical term, rebranding the condition as “differences of sexual development.”

“The idea being that our bodies don’t need to be altered, necessarily: Disorders need treatment; differences can be allowed to exist,” she said. “Differences can be tolerated, accepted and even celebrated.”

Keenan makes use of the many terms meant to define her.

“I use ‘intersex’ for present day, and I use ‘hermaphrodite’ when I’m talking about the ’60s and before, because that was the term when I was a baby,” she said. Using the different terms helps her give historical context for a time when “the protocol of the day was to lie to us.”

Years ago, it was accepted by the medical community that if you assign a child a gender — with surgery — and reinforce it, the child will assume that gender, Keenan said.

Looking back, she understands the decisions that were made for her as a baby.

“They had a baby they needed to get a home for, and in their minds, they needed to possibly perform surgery to do that. And that was the mission — get an unwanted baby a home — and they did what they needed to do that.”

Times have changed, and the medical community, when dealing with a baby born with atypical genitalia, does not always immediately “correct” a child’s anatomy.

“Intersex people are treated differently and better now because of societal advancement in thinking,” Keenan said. “We’re trying to stop the surgical intervention on infants so that their genitals are not changed before they reach an age where they express a desire to have surgery or express a gender preference.”

She also hopes all gender-variant people will be able to get birth certificates, licenses and other official documents aligned with their identity. They are “equally as valid in their beliefs,” even if science hasn’t caught up, she said.

“There was a time when science hadn’t caught up and understood my genetic reality,” she said.

Would she have preferred being surgically steered toward a male identity instead of female?

Though she believes “that’s probably a truer physical identity for me,” she would have wanted to go that way only “if I could be that way 17 years old in 2017,” since 1977 was “a harsher, crueler world to be different in.”

Today, she says she leads a wonderful life with her partner of 30-plus years, David.

“We’re very happy, and we’re considering retirement and what comes next in the next 30 years of our life,” Keenan said. “But I’m not content, because infant genital surgeries are still happening in America.”

Sleeping Man in Car With Gun-Shaped Cell Phone Case Prompts Police Standoff, Lockdown at Alhambra Shopping Center

Police swarmed an Alhambra parking lot Friday and put a shopping center on lockdown for several hours after receiving calls about an armed man in a car possibly having a medical issue, but authorities later determined the man was asleep and had a cellphone case shaped like a gun on his lap.

The Alhambra Police Department released this photo on Dec. 30, 2016 after a person asleep in a car with what appeared to be a gun prompted a lockdown at a shopping center.

The Alhambra Police Department released this photo on Dec. 30, 2016 after a person asleep in a car with what appeared to be a gun prompted a lockdown at a shopping center.

The incident began about 10:52 a.m. in the parking lot of the Albertsons grocery store located at Commonwealth and Fremont avenues. Responding officers found a man who appeared to be asleep or unconscious in the driver’s seat of a blue SUV with what appeared to be a gun next on his lap, the Alhambra Police Department reported.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Enforcement Bureau was called in and took over the investigation, police said.

Several stores including Albertsons and PetSmart were on lockdown as authorities were assessing the scene, and shoppers were not allowed to leave the stores or shopping center.

At about 2:35 p.m., the man surrendered peacefully after waking up, and exited his vehicle with his hands up, police reported.

Authorities determined the gun, was actually a cell phone case shaped like a gun.

The man did not need medical attention, and was not arrested, police said.

Stores in the shopping center resumed normal business operations by 4:30 p.m.

California’s First Dog, Governor’s Beloved Sutter Brown, Dies

Sutter Brown, the charismatic corgi who seemed to soften the rough edges of Gov. Jerry Brown and in the process became a social media sensation as California’s first dog, died Friday after an illness that had sparked a bipartisan outpouring of support.

The 13-year old dog, the oldest of two canines belonging to the governor and First Lady Anne Gust Brown, had emergency surgery in October to remove some cancerous masses. News of the dog’s prognosis traveled quickly through political circles, but his condition improved and he returned home with the governor. In recent days, his health took a turn for the worse, the governor’s office said.

The pets of politicians often hold a unique place in public life, and perhaps no California governor has more steadily relied on a four-legged family member for companionship and political peacemaking than Brown did with Sutter.

“It took a dog to humanize the Capitol,” said Jennifer Fearing, a lobbyist for animal rights issues who became one of Sutter’s unofficial caretakers in Sacramento.

N.Y. Police Officer Jumps Into Moving Car to Save Toddler From Allegedly Impaired Mother

A police officer jumped into a moving car to save a toddler and arrest the child's allegedly impaired mother, authorities in New York said Friday.

Maria Lagatta is shown in a booking photo released to WPIX by Suffolk County police on Dec. 30, 2016.

Maria Lagatta is shown in a booking photo released to WPIX by Suffolk County police on Dec. 30, 2016.

Maria Lagatta, 37, was driving approximately 20 mph eastbound on the Long Island Expressway in Manorville, about 60 miles east of Manhattan, when Suffolk County Police Department Highway Patrol Officer Joseph Goss tried to pull her over around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, police said.

When Lagatta refused to stop, Goss pulled alongside her and saw a child in the rear passenger seat, police told KTLA sister station WPIX in New York. The car slowed to 5 mph on the busy expressway.

"I'm a dad myself, so as soon as I saw the baby in the backseat ... the biggest threat I saw was the safety of that child getting rear-ended," Goss said at a news conference.

Goss sped past Lagatta's car, moving back and forth across lanes to slow traffic. Then he parked his vehicle on the right shoulder before jumping into her car through the passenger seat window.

Goss reached the shifter and put the vehicle in park, he said, and neither Lagatta nor her young daughter were hurt.

"The window that she rolled down to tell me that she can't pull over was actually the window of opportunity to actually stop the vehicle," Goss said.

The girl was released to a family member and Child Protective Services was notified.

Lagatta held on suspicion of driving while ability-impaired by drugs, aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15 years old or younger, and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.

She will be arraigned on Dec. 30.

Connecticut Supreme Court Reinstates Michael Skakel’s Conviction in 1975 Martha Moxley Murder

Michael Skakel could be headed back to prison after the Connecticut Supreme Court on Friday reinstated his conviction in the 1975 murder of a 15-year-old neighbor.

Skakel, the 56-year-old nephew of Robert and Ethel Kennedy, had spent more than a decade in prison for the killing of Martha Moxley until a judge in 2013 decided he did not receive adequate representation in his trial and ordered a new one.

On Friday, after Skakel had been free for three years, the state’s high court overruled the decision.

“Because we conclude that the petitioner’s trial counsel rendered constitutionally adequate representation, we reverse the judgment of the habeas court and remand the case to that court with direction to render judgment denying the petition,” the state’s high court said in its decision.

One of Skakel’s attorneys, Stephan Seeger, told CNN he was just becoming aware of the decision.

“We haven’t had time to fully digest the opinion at this juncture, but of course it’s a setback. We’re going to be dealing with other legal procedures that are available to avail Michael of any and all of his constitutional rights.”

Skakel has always proclaimed his innocence.

Moxley’s body was found in 1975 after a night of partying with Skakel, his older brother Tommy and other teenagers in an affluent gated community in Greenwich, Connecticut. Authorities said she was bludgeoned and stabbed to death; a broken golf club was found near her body.

In 2002, Skakel was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. In October 2012 he was denied parole, but a year later a judge determined that Mickey Sherman’s representation of Skakel was “constitutionally deficient.”

Skakel was freed on bail in November 2013.

One of Skakel’s three previous appeals went to the US Supreme Court but in 2006 the justices declined to hear that petition.

Army Warns Consuming Energy Drinks Can Be a Threat to Troops

The US military is warning against the danger of troops over consuming energy drinks, saying it could do “some serious harm to your body.”

Rip It Energy DrinkA post on the pentagon’s official science blog this week details the health risks involved, citing a report that found soldiers in the field were more likely to fall asleep on duty if they consumed multiple beverages a day.

The study by the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, titled “Energy drink consumption and its association with sleep problems among US service members on a combat deployment,” looked at data from over 1,000 soldiers and Marines conducting operations in Afghanistan in 2010.

The research found that nearly 45 percent of deployed military personnel consumed at least one energy drink daily, while nearly 14 percent reported drinking three or more per day.

“These products generally are unregulated and can have negative side effects,” the report said. “Those who drank three or more drinks a day also were more likely to report sleep disruption related to stress and illness and were more likely to fall asleep during briefings or on guard duty.”

The military has long had an interest In keeping troops on the battlefield awake, and from Instant coffee to caffeine-infused chewing gum in military rations, access to stimulants has been a feature of being deployed overseas.

Soldiers serving in recent war zones across the globe have grown particularly keen on energy drinks with many forward operating bases in Iraq and Afghanistan maintaining large stocks of the beverages.

One of the more commonly seen brands, Rip It, is actively involved in supporting military groups like the USO and highlights its military connection in its online marketing.

On the company’s website it says their drink “has been tested on the battlefield and is a favorite of our troops.” The company did not reply to a message left by CNN.

Dr. Patricia Deuster, professor and director of the Consortium for Health and Military Performance at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, told the Defense Department’s science blog that “doctors don’t know what the effects of (energy drink) ingredients are in larger doses.”

“I don’t think anybody has an answer on the long term effects question,” she added.

Man Accused of Slitting Throat of 16-Year-Old He Met on Backpage.com, Leaving Her Body in Suburban Chicago Garage

A man suspected of killing a teenage girl on Christmas Eve, leaving her in the garage of a suburban Chicago home, was denied bail Friday.

Antonio Rosales, 32, has been charged with murder in the death of 16-year-old Desiree Robinson, from the South Side of Chicago.

Antonio Rosales is shown in a photo provided to WGN.

Antonio Rosales is shown in a photo provided to WGN.

Rosales turned himself into police three days ago, according to KTLA sister station WGN in Chicago.

He admitted to the killing and explained to authorities how he met the victim through an ad on Backpage.com, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. He contacted her after attending a party.

Police say Rosales invited Robinson to a home in Markham, Illinois, where she showed up with two friends.  Witnesses later told police they saw Robinson and Rosales having sex in a truck during that first meeting.

Afterward, Robinson and her friends left, but investigators say the three girls came back a short time later because Rosales wanted to have sex with her again.

The two went into a garage next to the home while Robinson's friends fell asleep in their car.

Rosales told police a fight started after he didn't have cash to pay her. During the altercation, prosecutors say, Rosales punched her in the face and strangled her as she tried to call for help.

Prosecutors say Rosales then used a knife to slash Robinson's throat before locking her body in the garage. He came outside and told Robinson's friends that she'd be out shortly, and then left.

After several hours, around 9:00 a.m. on Christmas Eve, Robinson’s friends realized she hadn't returned and asked the homeowner to open the garage, according to investigators.

Desiree Robinson is shown in a photo obtained by WGN.

They found her naked body on the ground inside, along with a bloody knife, prosecutors said.

Meanwhile, police say Rosales – who had cuts and swelling on his knuckles and blood on his pants – went to a friend's home, then his sister's house.

He turned himself in on Tuesday and admitted to the crime, according to court documents.

Robinson's grandfather told WGN he had recently gained temporary custody of her and that she had begun skipping school. He believes she got caught up with the "wrong crowd," WGN reported. He reported her missing on Dec. 13, he said.

"I'm just numb," the girl's mother, Yvonne Robinson, said outside court Friday.

Rosales' prior criminal history includes robbery, assault and battery, for which he served two years in an Indiana prison, WGN reported.  He had an outstanding warrant for his arrest out of Massachusetts for a robbery last August.

Rosales is due back in  court Jan. 18.

With more than 290 people killed in the city this year, homicides also rose for the third year in a row. Still, the city remains far safer than a decade ago, when 480 people were killed and there were 46 percent more robberies than this year.

According to statistics from the Los Angeles Police Department, robberies were up by 13 percent, aggravated assaults were up by 10 percent and rapes were down by 4 percent through Dec. 17, compared with last year. Homicides were up by 5 percent.

Overall, violent crime was up by 10 percent over last year and 38 percent over two years ago.

Border Patrol Arrests This Year Up 23 Percent Over 2015, But Way Down From Pre-2008

It’s been a busy year for the US Border Patrol, with total nationwide arrests up 23% from 2015, according to a year-end report issued Friday by the Department of Homeland Security.

DHS released its annual report on immigration enforcement efforts across various federal agencies, highlighting the prioritization of resources on convicted criminals, threats to national security and those who attempt to cross the border unlawfully.

US Border Patrol reported 415,816 apprehensions nationwide, compared to 337,177 in fiscal year 2015. This increase in arrests, however, represents only a “fraction” of the apprehensions averaged per year between 1980 and 2008, according to the report.

“Apprehensions on the border in recent years — a strong indicator of total attempts to cross the border — are much lower than they used to be,” said DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson in a written statement following the report’s release.

Raw numbers alone do not tell the entire story.

For instance, DHS emphasized the significant demographic changes of those crossing the southern border over the last 15 years. In 2006, the majority of individuals caught crossing the border without authorization were single adults from Mexico, whereas in 2016, the majority were families and unaccompanied children from Central America, according to DHS officials.

Border Patrol apprehended 59,757 unaccompanied children nationwide in 2016, states the report, which covers fiscal year 2016.

The report also noted that an increasing share of migrants are surrendering to law enforcement to seek asylum protection rather than trying to evade apprehension.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir Member Quits Group, Refuses to Sing for Trump’s Inauguration

Jan Chamberlin, a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, is quitting the group and saying that she could never sing for Trump.

She sent a resignation letter to the choir president this week.

“I’ve tried to tell myself that it will be all right and that I can continue in good conscience before God and man,” Chamberlin wrote in a Facebook post. “I only know I could never ‘throw roses to Hitler.’ And I certainly could never sing for him.”

Chamberlin said she has concerns about the choir’s reputation after performing at the inauguration.

“Looking from the outside in, it will appear that Choir is endorsing tyranny and fascism by singing for this man,” she wrote.

“Tyranny is now on our doorstep; it has been sneaking its way into our lives through stealth. Now it will burst into our homes through storm,” Chamberlin added.

The choir did not return a request for comment. Boris Epshteyn, a spokesman for Trump’s inaugural festivities, simply said, “We’re honored to have the Mormon Tabernacle Choir perform in the 58th Inauguration, their sixth time participating in inaugural ceremonies, and we look forward to their uplifting performance.”

Phoebe Pearl, a dancer with the Rockettes, reportedly had previously protested on Instagram about the group being chosen to perform at the event. Her post has since been deleted.

The Madison Square Garden Company, which operates the Rockettes, previously said the dancers would not be compelled, by MSG or their union, to perform at next month’s inaugural festivities.

The committee for Trump’s inauguration has not yet publicized any major celebrities performing at the event — a change from the past two events.

The inaugural committee has announced The Rockettes, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and 16-year-old “America’s Got Talent” star Jackie Evancho.

Enhanced Security Measures Planned for New Year’s Eve at European Capitals, New York City

Holiday gatherings of large crowds always require extra security, but even more protective measures are being put in place for New Year’s Eve festivities in European capitals and the US this year.

The moves follow truck-ramming attacks in Berlin and Nice, France; as well as bomb attacks in Istanbul, Turkey, and stabbings and shootings in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and Denmark.

Berlin

Up to 4,600 extra police officers will be deployed around the German capital, more than double the number of additional personnel who were deployed for New Year’s Eve last year. Police armed with machine guns will be on patrol throughout the city, traffic checkpoints will be set up and bag checks will be conducted. Police will cordon off the Brandenberg Gate, a focal point of celebrations where one million revelers are expected to gather.

Twelve people were killed and at least 48 more injured when a truck plowed through an open-air Christmas market in Berlin on the evening of Dec. 19.

Anis Amri, a 24-year-old Tunisian who pledged allegiance to ISIS in a video before the attack, is accused of hijacking the steel-filled tractor-trailer, killing the Polish driver and plowing through the crowded market. He fled Berlin after the attack and was killed in a shootout with Italian police in Milan on Dec. 23.

Paris

The City of Light has mobilized 10,300 police, gendarmes, military and fire personnel for New Year’s Eve. According to Paris police chief Michel Cadot, 1,700 police officers will be deployed on the French capital’s Champs-Elysées, where bag and coat checks will be conducted at 24 checkpoints around the area. In addition, 230 private agents have also been hired by the mayor’s office, a first for the city.

In response to the truck attack in Berlin earlier this month and one in Nice on July 14 — in which Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel drove a 20-ton truck into crowds on the Promenade des Anglais seafront during a fireworks celebration, killing 85 and injuring more than 200 — concrete studs are being added as a preventative measure around the perimeter of the Champs-Elysées. Officials have canceled the fireworks launch from the Eiffel Tower, replacing it with a light and pyrotechnic show.

London

Around 3,000 officers will be on duty across central London on New Year’s Eve, both within and outside the ticketed areas where events are taking place. Armed officers regularly patrol the London Underground system and these patrols will be extended through Sunday, as was the case last New Year’s Eve.

A British Transport Police spokesman told CNN that the decision to extend patrols was taken many months ago, before the Berlin attack, and is not in response to any specific intelligence or threat. Across the country, police officers will be deployed at train and tube stations.

Rome

More than 1,000 uniformed and plain clothes officers will patrol the Italian capital over New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The officers will be mainly deployed around the Circus Maximus and along bridges over the Tiber river. Vehicles will be barred from the bridges and barriers will be places around gathering areas.

In a statement, Rome police said the measures “are designed to achieve the maximum security without generating excessive barriers or concerns.” Police have also launched a social network campaign with the hashtag: #dacciunamano, or “give us a hand,” which will allow revelers “to share with the authorities any notice of strange or alarming situations.. Police say there is no specific information on a threat to the city.

In Naples, an extra 800 security agents will be patrolling the streets, officials said.

New York

The New Year’s Eve celebration in the Big Apple will for the first time have 65 sand trucks around the area of Times Square, New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill said at a briefing Thursday. Chief of Departments Carlos Gomez said the vehicles will be placed in strategic locations.

The enhanced security measures are not based on any new credible threat or intelligence, but are purely a precaution due to the continued calls from ISIS for its sympathizers to carry out truck-style attacks, a law enforcement source previously told CNN.

O’Neill said that “at this time we have no direct concerns related to terrorism, to Times Square specifically, or New Year’s Eve in general” adding that the NYPD monitors and assesses threats 24 hours a day and confers regularly with law enforcement.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said on New Year’s Eve, people will see “extraordinary” assets deployed from the NYPD, including the Critical Response Command and Strategic Response Group, and there is a lot “you will not see.”

As many as 7,000 NYPD officers will work the event, Gomez said. There will be highly visible heavy weapons teams in Times Square and other areas outside the city, he added.

Explosive detecting canines will be deployed in Times Square and through the subway system, Gomez said. Police details have also been increased at Coney Island and Central Park — which will also be ringed by sand trucks and blocker cars, NYPD Assistant Chief Terry Monahan said.

Sheriff’s Department, LAPD Warn New Year’s Revelers: ‘Don’t Shoot’

Do not shoot your gun into the air on New Year’s Eve. It’s illegal.

That’s the plea and reminder from Southern California law enforcement at the end of every year.

This week, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department again told revelers: “DON’T SHOOT!

“The adage of ‘what goes up, must come down’ rings especially true in this case, and with the acceleration of gravity, physics determine free-falling objects speed up as they return to earth,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. “The danger of injuring someone with firing even a single round into the air is a lethal prospect.”

Despite the annual warnings, Los Angeles-area celebrants often fail to heed authorities’ advice and discharge firearms anyway.

Last year, the Sheriff’s Department responded to 91 shots fired calls between 8 p.m. Dec. 31 and 4 a.m. New Year’s Day, spokeswoman Nicole Nishida told KTLA Friday. The year before that, 74 calls came in regarding illegal shooting in the same timeframe, she told KPCC.

Anyone who witnesses such behavior is urged to take cover and call 911 — without confronting the shooter.

Under California Penal Code section 246.3(a), “any person who willfully discharges a firearm in a grossly negligent manner which could result in injury or death to a person” is guilty of a public offense. The section is under the “assault and battery” section of the state’s penal code.

Depending on the circumstances, prosecutors can decide whether to charge the individual shooter with a felony or misdemeanor, and a conviction can result in up to a year behind bars.

“Anyone arrested for discharging a firearm will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the Los Angeles Police Department’s website states.
