One Year After San Bernardino Terror Attack, Some Victims Say County Has Abandoned Them

After a heavily armed San Bernardino County employee and his wife attacked a county holiday event last Dec. 2, killing 14 people and wounding 22, county leaders sounded a clear message of support for their workers.

“The events of that day could have torn us asunder. They have not. They have drawn us closer together and rebounded our commitment to take care of one another,” Board of Supervisors Chairman James Ramos said at a memorial in January.

But a year later, some county employees who were victims of the attack, including witnesses and those who were physically injured, say such pledges ring hollow.

In interviews and at a recent public meeting, employees described struggling to cope with a callous county bureaucracy that provided little comfort as they tried to heal. Instead, they were left scrambling for help and tangling with a county-administered workers’ compensation program that has led to delays and denials of needed medication and treatment, the employees said.

Incentives Offered by Indiana Were ‘Important,’ Carrier Says of Trump-Pence Jobs Deal

Carrier is keeping more than 1,000 jobs in Indiana — thanks to “incentives” offered by the state run by Vice President-elect Mike Pence.

Carrier released a few more details Wednesday on the deal it struck with President-elect Trump and Pence to keep some jobs from going to Mexico. It is Trump’s first major victory, delivering on one of his biggest campaign promises.

“The incentives offered by the state were an important consideration,” to staying, Carrier said in a statement Wednesday. Pence is the governor of Indiana.

Carrier didn’t specify what the incentives were. Trump threatened Carrier with stiff tariffs during the campaign, but Carrier’s statement depicted a friendlier negotiation.

“The incoming Trump-Pence administration has emphasized to us its commitment to support the business community and create an improved, more competitive U.S. business climate,” Carrier said.

That likely refers to the Trump team’s promise to lower the corporate tax rate to 15% from its current 35% — a promise that Trump’s pick for Treasury Secretary, Steve Mnuchin, reiterated Wednesday on CNBC.

Carrier said the deal is “preserving more than 1,000 jobs” in Indiana. The Carrier plant in Indianapolis employs 1,400 workers. A nearby plant owned by the same parent company, United Technologies Electronic Controls, employs 700, and had also announced plans to move to Mexico. That plant was not part of the new deal.

Carrier became Trump’s punching bag early and often on his campaign to the presidency. Trump threatened to hit Carrier with a 35% tariff if it moved jobs to Mexico.

The battle between Trump and Carrier symbolized Trump’s broader threats to renegotiate trade deals and get tough on Mexico and China.

Despite keeping some jobs in America, Carrier emphasized its commitment to free trade.

“This agreement in no way diminishes our belief in the benefits of free trade,” Carrier concluded in its statement.

Convicted Rapist Gets 520 Years for Sexually Assaulting 9-Year-Old Girl He Was Babysitting

A 72-year-old convicted rapist was sentenced to 520 years in state prison for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl he was babysitting at her Canyon Country home last year, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

An undated photo from the California Megan's Law website shows John Adam Whitsell.

John Adam Whitsell was convicted last month of four counts of lewd act upon a child, four counts of oral copulation or sexual penetration with child 10 years old or younger, and one count of forcible oral copulation of a victim under 14.

Whitsell was babysitting a family member when he abused her between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2015, the DA’s office said.

He was arrested Nov. 10, 2015, and has not been released since then, inmate records show.

In two separate cases, Whitsell was convicted in 1971 in Louisiana of two counts of aggravated rape, the DA’s office said. He served seven years in prison for those convictions.

Kanye West Leaves Hospital, More Than a Week After Encounter with LAPD

After more than a week of hospitalization following an encounter with Los Angeles police, rapper Kanye West left UCLA Medical Center on Wednesday, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

It’s unclear whether West was going to one of his homes or another location, the source said.

Little is known about his hospitalization.

It took two hours for authorities and friends to persuade West to go to a hospital after receiving a call that the rapper was acting erratically last Monday at the residence of his personal trainer, two sources involved in the case said.

2 Arrested, Including Teen, After Man Dies Following Fight at Soccer Game in Victorville

Two people have been arrested, including a 17-year-old boy, in connection with the death of a man who died a day after getting into a fight at a soccer game in Victorville, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday.

Leobardo Garcia, 36, and the unnamed juvenile, were both arrested in Kings County on Nov. 21, about a month after the fatal incident, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release.

Deputies from the department’s Victorville Station initially responded to a medical aid call at 8:30 on Oct. 22 at a home and located the victim, 45-year-old Victor Paredes. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.

Detectives learned during the investigation that Paredes and his brother, Jose Paredes, had been involved in a fight while attending a soccer game the previous night at the Victorville Fairgrounds.

Following the match, Garcia and the 17-year-old, who played in the game, confronted the brothers about something that happened during the game, the release stated.

The verbal argument escalated, and the suspects allegedly assaulted the brothers, according to the Sheriff’s Department. The fight ended when a referee intervened.

Law enforcement was notified after the altercation, and everyone left the scene.

An autopsy was conducted on Victor Paredes six days after he died, and authorities concluded the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

Garcia was booked last Wednesday into the West Valley Detention Center on a murder charge; the teen was also booked on a charge of murder into the San Bernardino County Juvenile Detention Center, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact Detective Brendan Motley or Sgt. Greg Myler at 909-387-3589. Tips can be left anonymously by calling the We-Tip Hotline at 1-800-782-7463, or by visiting the website http://www.wetip.com.

Acton Crash Leaves Trailer Hanging From Overpass Next to 14 Freeway

A crash left a big rig’s trailer hanging over the side of a 14 Freeway overpass in Acton on Wednesday, creating an unusual scene for passing motorists.

A traffic collision call came into the California Highway Patrol from the Ward Road overpass at 1:41 p.m., according to CHP Officer Michele Bond.

One of two trailers being towed by a big rig went over the side of the overcrossing, Bond said.

Video taken by a passing driver showed a flatbed hanging from the overpass, with the truck’s cab having crashed into the embankment below.

Bond didn’t know if the truck’s driver was injured, but the CHP log did not indicate any injuries. The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the crash.

The big rig did not appear to be blocking lanes on the 14 Freeway.

Both trailers were empty, according to CHP’s traffic log.

Tustin Police Use GPS Device Hidden in Cough Syrup to Catch Alleged Pharmacy Burglars

Tustin Police used a GPS device hidden in cough syrup to arrest two men who allegedly broke into a pharmacy this month, officials said.

Willie Clark, left, and Brian Salinas, right, are seen in photos provided by the Tustin Police Department on Nov. 30, 2016.

Willie Clark, left, and Brian Salinas, right, are seen in photos provided by the Tustin Police Department on Nov. 30, 2016.

Crime analysts determined which pharmacies they believed would be targeted and worked with employees to set up devices in those locations to help track down the thieves.

About three weeks ago, Creative Compounding Pharmacy along Newport Avenue was burglarized and the suspects happened to steal one of the bottles of cough syrup that had a GPS device inside, officials said. That led authorities to the alleged burglars, Willie Clark, 21, and Brian Salinas, 20, who were eventually arrested.

Lt. Robert Wright said the department has used the method before with similar results.

“We’ve used it to target whatever crime we’re seeing an uptick in our city,” Wright said.

Denise Taylor, who owns the pharmacy, was in on the plot and said it made for a "great ending" when the suspects were arrested.

“I was very hopeful driving in at 2:45 a.m. that they would eventually be able to catch the people who did break in," Taylor said.

Democrats Tap SoCal Congresswoman Linda Sanchez as First Latina in House Leadership

In a 98-96 vote, Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Whittier) was elected the next vice chairwoman of the House Democratic Caucus on Wednesday, making her the first Latina to ever serve in House leadership.

“We always knew it takes a lot of hard work to get a majority of your colleagues on board with something, I’ve been working at this for more than a year, worked diligently, and I knew today whatever the outcome, I left it all out on the field,” Sanchez said after the vote.

Earlier in the day, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco fended off a challenge for her post from a group of younger members, some of whom had grumbled about how long some of the senior members have been in power, and whether newer members of the caucus had a voice.

Sanchez, who at 47 will also be the youngest member of House leadership, said she heard similar concerns from members as she campaigned for the position.

California Facing Statewide Teacher Shortage: New Survey

California faces a statewide teacher shortage because so many are leaving the job and so few are entering the profession, according to a new survey released Wednesday. And most school districts surveyed said the problem is getting worse.

The staffing problem is both wide and deep, with 75% of more than 200 districts surveyed reporting difficulties with filling positions and low-income urban and rural areas hit hardest.

“It’s a national phenomenon, but we are probably on the more severe side,” said Linda Darling-Hammond, head of the Palo Alto-based Learning Policy Institute, which oversaw the research. “This is partly because we had cuts and cuts for years in our budget for education.”

Teacher attrition has been fueled by poor working conditions that include larger class sizes. At the same time, fewer prospective teachers entered the training pipeline, a decrease of 75% over the last 10 years, Darling-Hammond said.

7 People Dead, 400 Structures Destroyed in Tennessee Wildfires

Breaking news update,  posted at 1:18 p.m. PT

Officials have recovered the bodies of three more people killed in the wildfires in Sevier County, Tennessee. A total of seven people have died, authorities said Wednesday.

Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters says more than 400 structures have been destroyed by fires in the area. Three people were rescued. He thanked “the big guy up above” for the rain Wednesday, which has helped firefighters.

Previous story:

James Wood’s mother was telling him on the phone that the wildfire that had roared into Gatlinburg had ignited her home.

Then he lost the connection. He hasn’t heard from his mom, Alice Hagler, since that Monday night.

Hagler is one of several people said to be missing after wildfires scorched roughly 15,000 acres in a resort-heavy area of eastern Tennessee, showered residents with embers and forced tourists to evacuate from their accommodations.

The fires, which spread with little warning Monday from the Great Smoky Mountains into inhabited areas in and near the resort towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, have left at least four people dead and 45 others injured, officials said. More than 250 buildings in the county are said to be damaged or destroyed.

“We had been talking for several hours on and off,” Wood told CNN affiliate WATE on Tuesday night. He had been living with his mother at her Gatlinburg house for the last five months but wasn’t home that night.

“She called me at 8:30 (p.m.) and said the house was on fire. I told her to get out immediately. We got disconnected and I have not been able to get in touch with her since,” said Wood.

Hagler’s relatives say they hope she might be taking shelter with someone and just hasn’t been able to make contact. It’s a hope echoed by several other families who say their loved ones in the Gatlinburg area are missing.

“Our search and rescue teams are going out house by house,” Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters told CNN on Wednesday. “There’s a few areas that we were unable to get to on Monday night because of the swift nature of the firestorm … and we’re finishing those up today.

“Right now, search and rescue is our main challenge.”

Of the four dead, the latest body was found Wednesday in a burned motel, officials said. The names of those who died were not released.

Some fires continued to burn Wednesday morning, and authorities continued to block off Gatlinburg, from which about 14,000 residents and tourists had been evacuated Monday.

The area could be helped by up to 2 inches of rain expected Wednesday into Thursday. But the stormy weather could also cause problems: Lightning strikes and winds — gusts up to 30 mph are possible Wednesday — could spark more fires, and the downpour could prompt flash flooding.

‘Human caused’

The fires that reached Gatlinburg began days earlier on a trail in the mountains 10 miles south of the city, National Park Service spokeswoman Dana Soehn said. But strong winds that began Sunday helped the fire spread into the Gatlinburg area on Monday.

Investigators believe the trail fire was “human caused,” Soehn said, without offering further information, but it’s still under investigation.

Wildfires have burned in parts of the Southeast for weeks, fueled by the region’s worst drought in nearly a decade.

Some major attractions such as the Ober Gatlinburg ski area and amusement park survived, but plenty of homes and other businesses were destroyed, and Gatlinburg residents have yet to be allowed back into the city to assess the damage.

While they wait, responders scramble to check more buildings, and families hope for news of the missing.

‘I thought she’d be standing in the driveway’

Michael Reed is desperate to find out what happened to his wife and two daughters, from whom he was separated on Monday night.

Reed and his family were in their Gatlinburg-area home when word spread that fire was burning out of control nearby. He and his 15-year-old son left in the family’s only vehicle to see what side of the road the fire was on.

He told CNN that he got stuck in traffic as people fled. He received a panicked call from his wife, Constance, 34.

“She … said there were flames across the street from the house. I told her to call 911,” he said. He rushed back to the home.

“The road was on fire and every house was engulfed in flames. I thought she’d be standing in the driveway.”

Since then, he’s been in a shelter in Pigeon Forge, trying to find out what happened to Constance and their daughters, Chloe, 12, and Lily, 9. He said authorities haven’t been able to find them.

“We’re just hoping for a miracle,” Reed told CNN affiliate WATE on Tuesday.

Memphis couple missing; sons injured

Also missing are Memphis couple Jon and Janet Summers, who were in the area with their three sons for a family getaway, CNN affiliate WMC reported.

The family appears to have been separated on Monday, and the sons were found unconscious, WMC reported. They were in a hospital on Tuesday.

Evacuees said they were forced to leave with only the clothes on their backs as fire surrounded their homes.

“There was flames everywhere,” 52-year-old Gatlinburg resident Mark Benzschawel told CNN’s Nick Valencia. “It was a firestorm.”

Benzschawel said police banged on his door Monday night to wake him and his partner, Denise Bearden. The couple alerted their neighbor, who managed to escape with her dog.

‘Solid wall of fire’

The fire destroyed a number of structures at Gatlinburg’s Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort & Spa. Chris Turner, who works at the resort, posted video of the damage to Facebook — smoke drifted from burned-out vehicles and the buildings’ charred remains.

Several emergency shelters opened to accommodate evacuees. At one time, about 2,000 people were staying in shelters in the area; 300 were in shelters Tuesday night, Waters said.

Authorities said they didn’t know when residents would be able to return to evacuated neighborhoods. Some learned through news reports that their house was destroyed.

Among them were Tim and Shirley Morrison, who saw a picture of their house on the news. They’d been in their home, on a hillside above Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg, when they saw the fire approach alarmingly fast.

“I was looking out our big windows and turned to my wife, and then turned back. It couldn’t have been more than 30 seconds, and there was a solid wall of fire,” Tim Morrison said.

They said they grabbed as many of their pets as they could, got in their cars and drove to safety. Three of their dogs and three of their cats made it with them; they don’t know where four other cats are.

Some residents needed oxygen after inhaling smoke. Officials in Cocke and Sevier counties canceled classes for Wednesday.

Pigeon Forge is home to Dollywood, the theme park owned by singer and actress Dolly Parton. At Dollywood, officials with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park evacuated guests from its resort and cabins as flames approached the area. The park was not damaged.

In a statement, Parton said she was heartbroken about the fire damage and had been “praying for all the families affected.”

“It is a blessing that my Dollywood theme park, the DreamMore Resort and so many businesses in Pigeon Forge have been spared,” she added.

Pilot in Colombian Crash Said Plane Was in ‘Total Electric Failure and Without Fuel,’ Recordings Show

Breaking news, posted 12:12 p.m. PT

The pilot of LAMIA Flight 2933, which crashed near Medellin, Colombia, said, “The plane is in total electric failure and without fuel,” according to two sources familiar with the investigation who heard audio recordings of conversations between the flight crew and air traffic control.

The audio was published in Colombian media. Seventy-one people were killed in the crash, including members of a Brazilian soccer team.

Previous story

As air safety officials begin their investigation into the deadly crash of LAMIA flight 2933 near Medellin, Colombia, the final resting place of the jet’s wreckage may prove to be a central clue in determining why the airplane crashed.

The crash killed at least 71 people during a charter flight to Medellin, including members of the Brazilian Chapecoense soccer squad on its way to the Copa Sudamericana finals. Three players, two crew members and one journalist survived, Colombian authorities said.

The lack of apparent fire damage among the wreckage of the British Aerospace Avro RJ85 is pointing investigators to consider fuel starvation as one of the contributing factors to Monday’s crash, a person familiar with the early inquiry said.

Fuel starvation occurs when fuel is cut off from the engines, causing them to stop running. It can be caused by a number of factors including a fuel leak, internal icing, failure of the fuel pumps or gauges, or crew error.

Alfredo Bocanegra, director of the Colombia Civil Aviation Authority, said even though a preliminary investigation pointed to an electrical problem, the possibility the plane ran out of fuel has not been ruled out, CNN Italian affiliate ANSA reported. However, Bocanegra said investigators would have to ascertain why the aircraft didn’t have enough fuel, because it was just 5 miles away from the airport.

The Colombian Civil Aviation Authority declined to comment further on technical details. Photos released by Civil Aviation Authorities showed debris from the four-engine Avro RJ85 strewn across a hillside with no apparent charring amongst the wreckage.

“We do know there was no fire when the plane impacted the ground, which may be one of the reasons why there are survivors from this terrible tragedy,” said Geoffrey Thomas, editor-in-chief of Airlineratings.com.

Such a wreckage pattern in past investigations has suggested there was little or no fuel remaining on the aircraft.

Starvation of fuel is “very, very rare in commercial aviation terms because there are so many checks and balances to make sure you have enough fuel on board,” said Grant Brophy, an air safety investigator.

Brophy cautioned against drawing too many conclusions from footage and photos from the scene.

Investigators will reconstruct the flight’s final hours using data collected from the flight data and voice recorder, as well as maintenance and manufacturing records. The so-called “black boxes” were recovered early Tuesday and were in excellent condition, according to Colombian aviation officials.

The charter flight took off from Bolivia’s Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz at 6:18 p.m. local time, according to air controller Manuel Palamas.

According to tracking data from FlightRadar24, the aircraft entered a racetrack-shaped holding pattern at around 20,000 feet before it crashed. Reports suggested the crew had previously communicated with air traffic control a problem with the jet’s electrical system.

Air accident investigators in the United Kingdom, where the plane was manufactured, are dispatching to the crash site to aid Colombian authorities in determining what happened.

The Avro series of regional jets were once a mainstay of the regional operations of small US and European airlines, but were retired in favor of more efficient two-engine jets and propeller planes. The jet that crashed Monday flew with US regional carrier Mesaba Airlines when it was first delivered in 1999, according to the Aviation Safety Network.

According to a July 2016 report by Boeing, the Avro family of aircraft has suffered 14 accidents in which the aircraft was a total loss, including seven with fatalities. Monday’s crash is the eighth due to noncriminal acts.

The crash marred what has been an otherwise exemplary year for aviation safety. Fatalities due to air crashes in 2016 are at less than half the 10-year average.

Gang Members Get More Than 50 Years in South L.A. Killing of Teen Over Red Shoes

Two gang members were sentenced Wednesday to at least a half-century in prison in the South Los Angeles shooting of a mentally challenged 19-year-old targeted over his red shoes.

Kanasho Shadrick Johns, 29, and Kevin Deon Johnson, 26, had been found guilty last month in the May 2015 murder of Tavin Price.

Price, who was not a gang member and had no criminal record, was at a car wash in the Hyde Park area with his mother and a family friend when he was targeted.

Because of his red shirt and shoes, the defendants asked Price about his gang affiliation, and the family friend responded that Price was mentally disabled and wasn’t in a gang. Price was shot four times and later died at a hospital.

Supporters and family members of Price wore red shoes at a police announcement of arrests last year. His mother, Jennifer Rivers, sobbed, saying her wounded son repeatedly asked her if he was going to die.

After a monthlong trial, the jury deliberated for about 2 1/2 hours before finding Johns and Johnson guilty of one count of first-degree murder with gang and handgun allegations.

The verdict was returned Oct. 24. Testimony came from some 25 witnesses, some of whom were unresponsive on the stand despite having previously identified the shooter, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The prosecutor told jurors that gangs “control people in such a powerful way,” the newspaper reported. “But they do not control the evidence in this case. They do not control this courtroom.”

Johns, who fled to Texas after the killing, was also found guilty of one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. Johns was the shooter, the jury found.

Johns smirked as the verdict was read, the Times reported.

“Johns has been making that face since the arraignment,” Rivers told the Times. “He has no remorse. Let’s see if he makes that face after some years in jail.”

Johns was sentenced to 53 years to life in prison, while Johnson got 50 years to life.

A co-defendant, Dwight Kevin Smith, 31, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in August. He testified against Johns and Johnson, according to the Times.

His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 7.

Tutor Accused of Slamming 7-Year-Old Into Wall, Fracturing His Jaw at School in Baltimore

Watch Video

A Baltimore school tutor is under police investigation after a student in his care was left with a fractured jaw and two missing teeth.

Trayvon Grayson’s mother says the 7-year-old suffered the injuries when the tutor threw him against a wall for acting unruly.

“I looked in the ambulance and there’s my son, his face big, mouth bloody. I turned to the man, ‘I said, ‘This isn’t regular restraint,” Lateekqua Jackson told CNN affiiliate WBFF.

The incident happened at the City Springs Elementary School.

The tutor, an employee of the charter school operator Baltimore Curriculum Project, told police that he removed Trayvon from his class for misbehaving. The tutor said he then lost his footing and the boy “hit himself” on the wall, according to the affiliate.

That’s an explanation Trayvon’s mother doesn’t buy.

“He can’t throw himself into the wall and fracture his jaw and lose his teeth,” she said. “He’s only 7 years old. He’s so small he’s not going to do the damage to himself.”

Larry Schugam, the executive vice president for the Baltimore Curriculum Project, said the incident made him “heartsick.”

“This is an unusual, isolated incident for our schools, and we are participating in a thorough investigation into what exactly happened,” Schugam told CNN. “Until that investigation is complete, the one employee involved has been suspended.”

The Baltimore City Public Schools told CNN it is working with police and “will take any action warranted once the investigation is complete.”

Netflix Will Start Allowing Members to Download Movies, TV Shows for Offline Viewing

Watch Video

Netflix announced on Wednesday members now have the option to download movies and shows to watch offline later. This means you can finally watch the new season of Stranger Things and Bloodline while on a flight or stuck in the subway.

The feature comes free of cost with all Netflix memberships. Members will want to make sure they have the most recent Netflix app on their Android or iOS devices to access the new “download” button.

Up until now, you needed a place with a reliable internet connection to access the streaming service. But Netflix wants to make its product more nimble to suit the lives of those on the go.

You’ll find Orange Is the New Black, Narcos and The Crown available — but you can’t download everything. Shows like the new season of Gilmore Girls, Friends and New Girl are restricted for now.

The company previously argued the feature was unnecessary, calling it a “short term fix for a bigger problem.” That problem, of course, being wireless internet availability.

But its competitor Amazon Prime embraced offline downloads for iOS and Android users more than a year ago.

According to Netflix’s Help Center page, “you’ll want to delete” downloaded titles before attempting to download new content.

That’s because some licensing agreements have limits on the number of titles people can download at the same time. The length of time Netflix users will have to watch a show or movie will vary by title. The “My Downloads” page will show members how long, such as 48 hours, they have with each title.

The company said in an email to CNNMoney it is working with “lots” of partners globally on securing downloading rights “for the bulk of the content on our service.”

The abductors of Redding mother Sherri Papini may have branded her and cut off her hair while holding her captive to send a message and humiliate her, Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko told “Good Morning America” on Wednesday.

“I would think that was some sort of either an exertion of power and control and/or maybe some type of message that the brand contained,” Bosenko said. “It is not a symbol, but it was a message.”

Bosenko declined to elaborate on the brand’s appearance. Papini’s blond hair was cut, Bosenko said, because her captor or captors were “very sick” and “may have wanted to not only cut it off not to change her physical appearance but also as to humiliate … to wear her down.”

Papini was found on the side of a road beaten, chained, with a bag over her head and weighing only 87 pounds Thanksgiving morning, her husband said in a statement released Tuesday.

Video Shows Large Venomous Cobra Emerging From Apartment Toilet in South Africa

Terrifying video posted to YouTube recently captured a snake handler attempting to remove a venomous cobra that emerged from a toilet inside an apartment bathroom in Pretoria, South Africa.

The serpent — described as an approximately 8-foot long snouted cobra — had apparently entered the toilet through the drainage system and was discovered last Thursday morning, according to local television station News 24.

A video of the incident posted to YouTube that same day by user Anton Meijer showed the handler attempting trying to extract the cobra.

According to Meijer, however, the cobra “got agitated and fought back,” prompting the handler to lose his grip.

The snake eventually managed to get back into the sewage pipe, and has not been seen by residents since, News 24 reported on Tuesday.

“We have put cameras in the pipes to look for it. Residents are still worried and some of them are feeling like if it comes up they want to kill it which is something I don’t want,” Barry Greenshields, the handler who was tasked with catching the cobra, told the television station.

“I hope he has left through the pipes,” Greenshields added.

California Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi Re-Elected as House Democratic Leader

UPDATE: 8:52 a.m. PT – House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi defeated Ohio Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan ‎to retain her post as the top elected Democrat in the House, during a closed-door meeting Wednesday.

The final vote tally was 134 to 63 for Pelosi, meaning she matched her prediction that she’d retain the support of two-thirds of House Democrats.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who has run the House Democratic caucus for the last 14 years, is expected to remain the top elected leader, but she’s fending off a challenge from Ohio Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan, who says Democrats failed to connect to people who backed Donald Trump and it’s time to shakeup the leadership.

“I think I could make a big difference pulling those Trump voters back because those are the voters who voted for me,” Ryan told reporters on Tuesday evening.

House Democrats will vote in a secret ballot contest on Wednesday morning. Although there has been some grumbling in recent years about the refusal of top House Democratic leaders, who are mostly in their 70’s, to provide chances for newer members, this race features Ryan taking those grievances public.

Both Ryan and Pelosi have been calling, emailing and meeting their colleagues to make their pitches on why they should lead a demoralized caucus, which is still searching for a strategy for dealing with President-elect Trump and a strengthened Republican-led Congress next year.

Ryan, 43, maintains that Pelosi, a California Democrat who is 76, has limited appeal in the heartland and other working-class areas where Democrats lost badly this fall.

For the most part, Pelosi has refused to engage in a back in forth with Ryan, but on Tuesday she fired back at the Ohio Democrat, who was a frequent surrogate for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in his home state, telling the Huffington Post in an interview, “he didn’t even carry his district for Hillary Clinton.”

The Minority Leader insisted she had “strong support from our friends in the unions, including steelworkers, which I guess are his area.”

She brushed off his criticism that she can’t appeal to voters in rural areas and on conservative media outlets, saying, “You know what? If you want to come interview me, I’m happy to answer your questions about how we go forward. I’m not going to pay attention to, ‘I can’t step in a union hall.’ I’m a woman of steel in there. … I’m constantly invited by the unions to go to their meetings. That’s just not, it’s just not true.”

Ryan said he agrees with Pelosi’s strategy to fight Republicans’ efforts to overhaul entitlement programs like Medicare, but he said that “if I am leader we will be talking about jobs, we will be talking about wages, we will talking about the economy, we will be talking about pensions — bread and butter issues that people in rural issues and in industrial Midwest and down south care very much about. We’ve gotten off that message.”

So far Ryan has about a dozen public supporters within the caucus, which will include over 190 members in the next Congress, but still claims he is “within striking distance.”

Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego, a supporter of Ryan’s, said he’s hearing about “an undercurrent of support” and told reporters the secret ballot “will surprise people.” He said that even if Ryan falls short, the Democrats will be “making a statement that the caucus is looking for accountability.”

Many of Pelosi’s allies say she has deep support and her record-breaking fundraising skills are a quality members need to be competitive in 2018. She has already proposed some reforms to caucus rules to respond to the push from newer members that there are few opportunities to advance.

Michigan Democratic Rep Dan Kildee told CNN he’s backing Pelosi, and praised her for leading the effort to deal with the contaminated water crisis in his hometown of Flint, Michigan. But he said it was good there was a contest about the party’s message, telling CNN, “I think this is a good debate for us to have.”

Decision Expected on Whether to Charge Charlotte Officer in Fatal Shooting of Keith Lamont Scott

Two months after Keith Lamont Scott was killed by a police officer at a Charlotte apartment complex, the local district attorney is expected to announce whether the officer will be charged.

Keith Lamont Scott, pictured at right in a photo released by his family, was fatally shot by police in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sept. 20, 2016.

Keith Lamont Scott, pictured at right in a photo released by his family, was fatally shot by police in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sept. 20, 2016.

The 43-year-old black man’s death sparked protests and added more fuel to the national debate over whether police are too quick to use deadly force, particularly against African-American men.

The officer who shot Scott, Officer Brentley Vinson, is also black.

Police said they were looking for someone with an outstanding warrant when Scott, 43, exited a vehicle with a gun.

Scott’s family said the father of seven children didn’t have a gun. But police say Vinson opened fire after Scott stepped out of a vehicle with a gun in his hand and didn’t obey commands to drop it.

Scott’s death led to public pressure on local police to release video of the shooting. The night after Scott’s death, hundreds of protesters gathered. Many said they were angry about what they said was unnecessary police action. Some protests were peaceful, others turned violent.

In October, officials released footage of the incident. Video taken by Scott’s widow shows a different perspective of what happened.

Dashcam footage shows an officer in plain clothes with his weapon drawn on Scott as Scott exits an SUV and begins walking backward. Vinson then shoots Scott four times.

Attorneys for Scott’s family have said the videos show he wasn’t aggressive when police surrounded him. Scott’s daughter said her father was in his SUV reading a book, waiting for a son to come home from school. But police said no book was found at the scene.

Cell phone video recorded by Scott’s wife, Rakeyia, shows a different angle of the incident. In that video, a man repeatedly yells for someone — apparently Scott — to “drop the gun.”

“He doesn’t have a gun. He has a TBI (traumatic brain injury),” Rakeyia Scott says, referencing an injury Scott sustained during a motorcycle accident. “He’s not going to do anything to you guys. He just took his medicine.”

The videos don’t clearly show whether Scott was armed. And critics say there’s one key element missing from the body camera video released by police: sound.

An autopsy report later revealed the cause of Scott’s death as gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen.

Tests of Scott’s blood indicated the presence of diazepam, amantadine, babapentin, nicotine, nordiazepam and promethazine. Scott’s family attorney said the drugs were being used to treat Scott’s traumatic brain injury.

Marine’s Wife Ordered to Remove American Flag From Outside Oceanside Home

The wife of a Camp Pendleton Marine received a letter from her homeowner association earlier this week instructing her to remove an American flag from outside their home.

Heather Valenti and her husband Steven moved to Oceanside in April after he was transferred from a military base in Virginia, KTLA sister station KSWB in San Diego reported.

Valenti placed an American flag outside their condo, in part, to honor her spouse, who is deployed.

The letter stated she must remove the flag because it's located in a common landscaping area.

It read in part:

"In keeping with good management practices, the following requires your immediate attention: During a recent property inspection a flag was noted in the Common Area landscaping at your unit, which is a violation of the Association CC&R's. Page 6 of the Rules and Regulations states: 'No property may be left or stored in the Common Area outside any residence.' Please remove the flag from the Common Area landscaping immediately. Failure to comply will result in further action by the Board of Directors."

"With my husband overseas, this is important to us. We're American. It's not offensive to anybody. It's not even doing anything," Valenti said.

She questioned why the HOA hasn't done anything about other neighbors who also display items, such as security alarm signs and a flag with an image of a pineapple, in common areas.

"I just feel like I'm being targeted," Valenti said. "There are other people in this community that have other things up in the same exact spot and I haven't seen them taken down; no consequences with that."

"I don't want to be fined so if I do have to take it down, I would like to have everybody take down their stuff for me to take it down as well," she added.

The HOA, Curtis Management Company, did not return KSWB's phone calls or emails regarding Valenti's concerns.

The official cause of death for all three was “acute MDMA toxicity,” referring to the formal name for the illegal drug Ecstasy, said supervising coroner investigator Mike Sutcliffe.

There have now been at least 28 confirmed drug-related deaths nationwide since 2006 among people who went to raves organized by Los Angeles-area companies. Fifteen have died in Southern California — seven in San Bernardino County and eight in L.A. County — and six in the Las Vegas area.

The three had attended the rave held during the last weekend of July, produced by a division of concert giant Live Nation, which was moved from the Los Angeles County fairgrounds in Pomona last year after two college students died of drug overdoses. This year’s Hard Summer saw record attendance.

Father’s Desperate Plea Prompts Lifetime Supply of Cups for UK Boy With Autism

For Ben Carter, the beloved little blue cup wasn’t just a drinking vessel — it was a lifeline.

The 14-year-old, who has severe autism, has drunk from the distinctive two-handled cup since he was a toddler. He refuses to sip from anything else even after it resulted in more than one trip to the hospital due to dehydration.

So when Ben’s father Marc Carter found the crucial sippy cup was wearing out, he launched a global plea.

“These cups are not made anymore, the replacements are all new and fancy, we’ve tried them, Ben throws them at us,” Carter said in a tweet, shared thousands of times.

“Maybe you have one stuck at the back of a cupboard?” he asked.

Such was his son’s reliance on drinking from the cup that he’d twice been admitted to hospital with severe dehydration when without it, Carter said.

“In all honesty we’re really worried what will happen if it falls apart completely,” said the concerned father from Devon, in the south west of England.

Global reaction

People around the world responded, offering blue sippy cups that looked similar. But unless it was “99.9% identical,” Ben would refuse to drink from it explained Carter.

The plea caught the attention of the cup’s manufacturer Tommee Tippee. The company said its staff in the US, Australia, France and Hong Kong searched for the cup. It eventually found the original mold design and has offered to produce 500 cups for the teenager.

“Our factory team discovered that the tools to make the original cups were still stored away and, crucially, they were in a usable condition,” said the company in a statement on its website.

“We are delighted to confirm that we are able to start production on a run of the original cup, ensuring that Ben has a lifetime supply and that his family won’t ever have to worry about finding another cup,” it added.

“You’ve been incredible,” said Carter in a video message to all the people who had helped his search.

“We have more cups than we could have dreamt of.”

The incident began about 6:30 p.m. when three suspected robbers walked into a gold and jewelry store at Plaza Mexico in the 3100 block of East Imperial Highway, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Michael Thomas said.

The three attempted a smash-and-grab robbery, Thomas said, but security guards got involved and a series of altercations broke out.

The guards chased the three attempted robbers around the shopping center when shots rang out.

No one was hit and it did not appear that the security guards fired any of the shots, Thomas said.

One of the attempted robbers was taken into custody but the other two are outstanding, Thomas said.

Trump Promises to ‘Remove’ Himself From Business, Avoid Conflicts of Interest

Donald Trump promised Wednesday to ‘remove’ himself from his businesses and said he will announce details in two weeks about how he’ll avoid conflicts of interest when he is president.

Trump used his favorite method of communicating with the public — Twitter — to announce plans for a “major news conference” on Dec. 15 to discuss plans to leave the Trump Organization.

His adult children, whom he has said he will put in charge of the company, will be a part of the news conference.

Trump owns or has a position in more than 500 companies, according to a CNN analysis. That includes about 150 that have done business in at least 25 foreign countries, including Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

There have been growing questions about the potential conflicts of interest posed by Trump’s continued business interests and his role as president. A poll by CNN found that 6 in 10 Americans believe Trump is not doing enough to address conflicts of interest.

His tweets said he is not mandated to leave his business by law, but that “I feel it is visually important, as President, to in no way have a conflict of interest with my various businesses.”

Trump also said he is doing so “in order to fully focus on running the country in order to make America great again.” Legal documents are being crafted which take him completely out of business operations, he claimed. “The Presidency is a far more important task!”

While details about his planned separation from the business are not yet known, many ethics government experts have questioned whether simply turning his businesses over to his children does enough avoid conflicts of interest.

Ethics lawyers say Trump should follow predecessors Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and use a blind trust.

A blind trust would mean that Trump would sell his assets and put the proceeds in the hands of a trustee with “no preexisting business relationship” with him, said Richard Painter, the chief White House ethics lawyer for former President George W. Bush. “It certainly can’t be your own family members.”

Painter said that Trump’s family plan won’t solve problems caused by a constitutional prohibition on federal office holders from accepting a “present, emolument, office or title” from a foreign country. “No matter what, they are going to have to unwind the business relationships with any foreign governments or company controlled by foreign governments,” said Painter.

Democrats in Congress have also made clear that they will raise the issue of conflicts of interests, although being in the minority limits their ability to hold hearings. But all of the Democrats on the House Oversight Committee recently signed a letter demanding that its Republican chairman, Jason Chaffetz of Utah, start reviewing Trump’s financial arrangements.

“Mr. Trump has exhibited a shocking level of disdain for legitimate bipartisan concerns about his conflicts of interest,” the letter said.

There have also been calls for the media for Trump to liquidate his business interests, including from the conservative Wall Street Journal editorial page. But Trump told reporters and editors from The New York Times last week that selling his business would be “a really hard thing to do,” complicated by his real estate investments.

The fact that he will hold a news conference is significant in itself. He has gone longer than any other recent president-elect without holding a press conference.

Most did it within the first three days following their election.

While Trump has sat down for interviews with some journalists, including Leslie Stahl from 60 Minutes and the New York Times, he has not held a press conference since July 27, which was shortly after the Republican National Convention.

The employee, who has not yet been identified, was taken to a local hospital where he died, according to San Francisco Police. Cirque du Soleil said it could not identify the employee as his family had not yet been reached.

“We are currently gathering more information about this tragic accident and will update you with more details as soon as we are in a position to do so,” it stated.

The incident happened around 6:43 p.m., just before the scheduled 8 p.m. show located near the city’s AT&T Park. The San Francisco Police Department and the state’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health, also known as Cal-OSHA, are investigating the incident.

The Tuesday night performance was canceled. “Luzia” opened in San Francisco earlier this month and is scheduled to run until the end of January.

The death could bring more scrutiny about safety at the company.

It became an issue in 2013 after a Cirque du Soleil performer, Sarah Guillot-Guyard, plunged to the floor after the wire rope from which she was suspended broke. The aerialist fell nearly 100 feet to her death in front of an audience at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino.

Earlier this week, a former Olympic gymnast fell face first about 16 feet during a Cirque du Soleil performance in Brisbane, according to 7 News, a CNN affiliate in Australia. She suffered a fracture to her neck and a broken arm, but was reported to be in good condition.

A man stole an aluminum bucket full of gold flakes valued at $1.6 million from the back of an unattended truck in midtown Manhattan on September 29. The pail weighed approximately 86 pounds.

An armored truck company was making a pickup and left the back of the truck open and unattended in front of 48 West 48th St. between 5th and 6th avenues. In the time the truck was left alone, a man was able to walk up and make off with some of its precious cargo.

In surveillance footage released by the New York Police Department, a man walks up to the back of the truck, grabs the bucket, and shuffles off with it in broad daylight. At first, he's about to walk past the truck, but then he notices the unattended bucket and makes a turn to grab it. The video shows two men chatting in front of the truck as the suspect walks away with the gold.

The men don't seem to notice the gold disappearing. In the footage, the thief can be seen struggling under the weight of the loot.

The NYPD is still looking for the thief. He is described as a Hispanic male who is about 5 feet 6 inches tall, 150 pounds and between 50 and 60 years old.

Suspected Tornado Leaves 3 Dead After Tearing Through Northeastern Alabama

Watch Video

A suspected tornado that tore through Alabama early Wednesday killed three people and injured at least two others, officials said, as a powerful band of storms passed through the state.

Early Wednesday, November 30, 2016 morning, a tornado ripped through Jackson County, which is located in the northeastern tip of Alabama, and touched down shortly after midnight killing three people and injuring multiple others. (Credit: National Weather Service)

The storm ripped through Jackson County in northeastern Alabama, causing destruction over a 1.5-mile path, knocking down power lines and mangling mobile homes near the community of Rosalie.

“We can’t tell what kind of damage we’ve got (due to the dark),” Jackson County Sheriff Chuck Phillips told CNN affiliate WAFF-TV in Huntsville.

Jackson County Coroner Harry Laney told CNN that local officials and law enforcement have started to assess the damage to homes and treat injured residents. A search-and-rescue team has begun looking for others who may have been injured.

‘Everybody is just pulling together’

The National Weather Service also observed a possible tornado in neighboring DeKalb County that packed 40-mph winds.

“Everybody is just pulling together,” Huntsville Emergency Medical Services Inc. Director Don Webster told CNN affiliate WAAY-TV in Huntsville. “It’s a team effort: People (are) out here trying to help their neighbors (even if) they don’t even know them, trying to work with them. It’s good to see our community come together at times like this.”

Across the state in Colbert County, home to the famed recording center of Muscle Shoals, emergency responders had begun trying to determine how many homes were destroyed.

“We’ve had a community member lose their residence,” Colbert Heights volunteer Fire Chief EJ Lindblom told WAAY. “But nobody got seriously hurt and nobody has lost any life so we got that to be thankful for.”

Shelter from the storm

More than 50 miles southeast, about 70 people in Winston County were thankful to be alive after seeking refuge in a storm shelter. The storm shelter, installed three years ago, was built following a tornado outbreak in April 2011.

“My family, we left our house about four minutes before it got here,” Christopher Hood, a Helicon volunteer firefighter, told CNN affiliate WBMA-TV in Birmingham. “… It was standing room, rubbing elbows only.”

Hood could hear the wind whistle scream over the top of the shelter as debris smacked the exterior of the structure, damaging cars outside.

“It was just like a drum on the inside. And it was loud, it was really loud,” Hood said.

The shelter survived. However, the adjacent Helicon Community Center, a new building that had just been completed, was destroyed.

Thousands without power in Alabama

Alabama Power Co. reported that about 3,500 customers are without power as a result of the strong band of storms overnight.

Of those, 3,300 are in the state’s western counties. The remainder of outages are scattered throughout the Birmingham metro area, an Alabama Power media relations representative told CNN.

DIRECTV NOW Ditches the Satellite, Lets You Stream Live TV Channels Instead

DIRECTV NOW is a new streaming TV service that offers popular TV channels with no credit check, contract or satellite dish necessary.

Promotional Consideration Provided by AT&T

Rich’s Note: Although AT&T sponsors my Tech Report in certain cities it doesn’t change my thoughts on this exciting new service.

DIRECTV is doing something interesting by launching a new TV service that doesn’t require a satellite dish. It’s called DIRECTV NOW and it’s aimed at the 20 million or so people in the U.S. who don’t have cable TV or have already cut the cord.

Follow KTLA Tech Reporter Rich DeMuro on Facebook or Twitter for cool apps, tech tricks & tips!

The service is super easy to sign up for – just pop in a credit card number, choose a plan and you’re granted instant access. It’s very similar to the way HULU and Netflix operate.

But here you are really getting cable TV service without any special equipment, similar to offerings from Sling TV and PlayStation Vue. You access live streams through an app on a device like Apple TV, Amazon’s Fire TV, the web, your mobile phone or a tablet.

It’s pretty clear DIRECTV NOW wants to be everywhere. At launch it works on all of the major platforms, including Chromecast, iOS, Android and more. Roku support is coming in 2017.

DIRECTV’s done a good job at getting many of the channels we already know and love on board. A basic package of 60+ channels includes CNN, Nickelodeon, ESPN, Disney, HGTV, Bravo, E!, Disney Junior and more. The smallest package costs 35 dollars a month. These packages also have millennial friendly names like “live a little,” “just right,” “go big” and “gotta have it.”

The best deal is the limited time launch special – for $35 a month you get over 100 channels, which is 50 percent off the regular price. If you sign up for that special you’ll keep that price as long as you don’t cancel. DIRECTV says prices will increase slightly as time goes on, just like regular TV subscriptions.

So how do you choose DIRECTV NOW over regular DIRECTV or another service? It really comes down to the features you want. DIRECTV’s satellite offering has pretty much every channel you can imagine, plus every sporting event and NFL game. There’s also DVR service and 4K programming.

With DIRECTV NOW, you can watch on up to two devices at once, and although there is no DVR just yet, there is extensive video on demand.

It really is a totally new approach to TV. The reality is that a lot of people would love to just pick and choose their channels, and subscribe individually, but at this point no one is really letting you do that. You could build your own bundle by getting something like Netflix and HBO Now, but just those two things would cost you $25 a month. Here for $35 you’re getting a ton more. You can add HBO and Cinemax for $5 a month each.

David Koechner, Actor

David Koechner is probably best known for his role as the absurd Champ Kind in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and its sequel. But that’s just one role of some 160 or so film and TV credits to his name. Many of them are comedic roles. After all, he trained at Second City Theater in Chicago and was a cast member on Saturday Night Live in the mid 90s.

Frank Buckley appears alongside David Koechner.

The guy is funny. Where did the funny come from and what’s he actually thinking about when he performs an improv scene? How old was Dave when he decided he wasn’t going to follow in his dad’s footsteps and work in the turkey coop manufacturing business in Tipton, Missouri? And what was Dave’s first career path that didn’t work out? You’ll hear his answers to all of those questions on this edition of Frank Buckley Interviews.

It was a genuine pleasure to interview Dave. I hope you enjoy our conversation.

Nintendo-Themed Land Coming to Universal Studios Hollywood

Nintendo released a video on Tuesday teasing what fans might expect at the Nintendo lands coming soon to Universal Studios theme parks in Orlando, Hollywood and Japan.

The effort intends to make park guests feel as though they’re inside some of their favorite games.

“You’re transported into that world, and [visitors will] stand there for a moment and see it in front of them as if they’ve just walked into their game platform,” Mark Woodbury, president of Universal Creative, said in the video. “I think that’s going to be a really exciting thing.”

While the partnership was announced earlier this year, planning and creative development is already underway for the massive project.

The Nintendo experiences at Universal theme parks will feature characters, like Mario, and interactive attractions, shops and restaurants.

There’s still no word on when fans can expect to hang out with Princess Peach and Yoshi, but the company revealed in a new press release the attractions will open over the next several years. The first detailed announcement is expected soon.

Nintendo’s expansion follows other Universal’s themed attractions like Harry Potter and The Simpsons.

Carrier poses an early critical test for Trump, who promised during the campaign to keep American jobs from fleeing to Mexico.

Trump and Mike Pence, the vice president-elect and current governor of Indiana, will be in Indiana on Thursday to announce the deal, Carrier said. The agreement will include new inducements from the state, according to CNBC’s David Faber.

The company, which is owned by defense contractor United Technologies, announced in February that it would close two Indiana plants — a Carrier plant in Indianapolis that employs 1,400 workers and a United Technologies Electronic Controls plant in nearby Huntington, Indiana, that employs 700.

The company planned to send that work to Mexico starting next year, a move that would have saved it $65 million a year in labor costs, according to the union that represents the workers.

United Technologies is a leading defense contractor that benefits from billions of dollars in federal spending, so it needs to maintain good relations with the incoming Trump administration.

United Technologies collects about $5.6 billion in annual revenue from U.S. government contracts, according to company filings, which is equal to about 10% of its overall revenue.

Compromise Permits Pentagon to Forgive Debts Owed by Thousands of California National Guard Soldiers

House and Senate negotiators announced a compromise Tuesday that would permit the Pentagon to forgive debts owed by thousands of California National Guard soldiers who received improper bonuses during the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The agreement, included in a defense bill due to be voted on by the House on Friday and the Senate next week, seeks to strike a balance between the Pentagon’s concerns about fraud in the bonus system and lawmakers’ attempts to resolve a scandal that has hurt thousands of military veterans and sparked a public furor.

The compromise calls on the Pentagon to forgive the enlistment bonuses and student loan benefits unless the soldier who received the money “knew or reasonably should have known” that he or she was ineligible for it.

The provision stops short of requiring the Pentagon to forgive debts owed by all California Guard soldiers as long as they fulfilled the terms of their enlistment contracts and did not commit fraud — a far more sweeping waiver that members of the California delegation had proposed.

Steven Mnuchin, Ex-Goldman Sachs Banker and Film Producer, Tapped to Lead Treasury Dept.

President-elect Donald Trump has tapped Steven Mnuchin, a former Goldman Sachs banker who profited from the housing meltdown, as his Treasury secretary, according to an official briefed on the decision.

Mnuchin’s career has been full of contradictions. He started as a Wall Street insider working for old-line firms before running a series of eclectic businesses — including his own hedge fund and a West Coast consumer bank. In recent years, he has been a Hollywood movie producer.

He served as finance chairman of Trump’s presidential campaign and has been one of Trump’s closest economic advisers. His nomination will be announced as soon as Wednesday, the official said.

Democrats immediately signaled their strong opposition to the expected nomination, which would require Senate confirmation. In a statement, the Democratic National Committee quipped “So much for draining the swamp.” The DNC added that “nominating Steve Mnuchin to be Treasury Secretary… is a slap in the face to voters who hoped he would shake up Washington.”

As Treasury secretary, the 53-year-old Mnuchin would be the face of the American economy around the world. The Treasury Department has expansive responsibility over business and oversees banking regulations, financial markets and the IRS. It has about 100,000 employees, an estimated 91,000 of them at the IRS.

Besides co-signing the currency, the Treasury secretary is Uncle Sam’s banker — paying the bills, collecting taxes, managing the federal government debt and selling billions of dollars a year in Treasury bonds.

Mnuchin, like his father before him, was a partner at Goldman. He worked for the firm for 17 years, joining at age 22 and leaving just before his 40th birthday, in 2002.

He briefly joined the hedge fund of his former college roommate Eddie Lampert. Mnuchin still serves as a director of Sears Holdings, of which Lampert is chairman and CEO.

After less than a year, he left Lampert to work as a portfolio manager for the hedge fund of George Soros, the billionaire financier who has bankrolled liberal candidates and causes — and who was depicted as a villain in Trump’s last campaign ad.

He only stayed a year, leaving in September 2004 to start his own hedge fund, Dune Capital Management.

As a producer, he has put out films including “American Sniper,” “The Lego Movie” and this summer’s “Suicide Squad.” His latest film, which opened right before Thanksgiving, is called “Rules Don’t Apply.”

Mnuchin joined the Trump campaign as finance chairman in May, and sources tell CNN he made it clear early that he wanted the Treasury job. He recruited deputies before he was tapped for the job.

Mnuchin has contributed to both Republican and Democratic candidates, including Hillary Clinton’s Senate campaigns and 2008 presidential run. He gave to Barack Obama’s Senate and presidential campaigns and to Charles Schumer, the new Democratic leader in the Senate.

Mnuchin and his brother were sued by the trustee trying to recover money for Bernard Madoff’s victims after his Ponzi scheme unraveled in 2008. They were executors of their mother’s estate, and had withdrawn her investment with Madoff shortly after she died in 2005.

A court eventually blocked the trustee, Irving Picard, from collecting Mnuchin’s mother’s $3.2 million in profits withdrawn from the Madoff fund long before its collapse.

Mnuchin led the group that bought failed subprime lender IndyMac for pennies on the dollar in 2009, about a year after the FDIC took over the California bank following a run on deposits by customers.

IndyMac had become a poster child for the risky home loans that brought on the housing crisis and the meltdown in financial markets. The FDIC agreed to assume much of the losses as part of its sale to Mnuchin, who renamed it OneWest.

But regulators soon questioned OneWest’s foreclosure practices, which included so-called robo-signings that pushed homeowners into foreclosure without proper review or due process.

The bank was one of many that agreed to pay millions in fines to compensate customers. Occupy Los Angeles protesters showed up at Mnuchin’s Bel Air mansion. And this month, two fair housing groups in California filed a complaint with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, accusing the bank of discriminating against minority borrowers during his tenure there.

Mnuchin eventually sold OneWest to CIT Group in 2014 for $3.4 billion and joined CIT as part of the deal. When he left CIT less than two years later, he received a $10.9 million severance package.

A number of photos showing mysterious jelly-like creatures that have recently washed up in Huntington Beach has prompted rampant speculation on social media.

One Facebook user, Ryan Rustan, wrote that he was walking on the shoreline Monday night when he felt “little water balloons popping under my feet, super squishy.”

He said looked down and was unsure what exactly he had stepped on.

“Couldn’t tell if they were jellyfish or eggs but there are thousands up and down the beach,” Rustan wrote on Facebook, sharing the post to a group called Huntington Beach Community Forum.

Dan Coursey, who also posted pictures of the jelly-like pods to the same Facebook group, wrote that the creatures burrowed in the sand.

Both post prompted a number of comments about what the mysterious creature, with guesses ranging from baby jellyfish to burrowing sea cucumbers. A number of commenters believe they are salps, which are a type of invertebrate marine animal.

Some simply called them “creepy sea creatures,” while others speculated it was alien life.

Christopher G. Lowe, a marine biology professor at Cal State Long Beach who is the director of the university’s shark lab, told KTLA that the the school’s resident invertebrate expert says they are sea cucumbers.

Huntington Marine Safety Lt. Claude Panis, who has worked for the lifeguard department for nearly 40 years, told the Orange County Register he was unsure what the jelly creatures were; however, he said it was possible they were a lingering effect of last winter’s El NiƱo

“There’s all kinds of weird things happening,” Panis told the newspaper, noting that was not the only unusual occurrence in the Huntington Beach area. He added there has been a number of stingray sightings uncommonly close to shore that has also left lifeguards scratching their heads.

“It’s just strange,” he said.
