8 Wounded, Gunman Dead in Shooting at San Diego Apartment Complex

A gunman opened fire at a San Diego apartment complex on Sunday evening, wounding eight people before being killed by police officers, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The La Jolla Crossroads Apartments on the 9000 block of Judicial Drive in La Jolla are seen in an undated Google Maps Street View image.

The shooting occurred around 6 p.m. in the pool area of the apartment complex in the La Jolla neighborhood, police said.

The victims were transported to local hospitals and some are in critical condition, said Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman.

It’s unclear how many people were at the pool at the time of the shooting.

The gunman was killed during a confrontation with officers, said Zimmerman.

The gunman, who has not been identified, appeared to be reloading his gun when three officers arrived to the scene. Three officers shot the man after he pointed his gun at them, police said.

The shooter’s motive has not been determined.

Congressional Negotiators Reach Deal to Fund Government Through September

Bipartisan congressional negotiators reached a critical agreement late Sunday on a massive spending bill that if approved by the House and Senate would fund the government through the end of September, senior aides from both parties told CNN.

The plan would add billions for the Pentagon and border security but would not provide any money for President Donald Trump’s promised border wall with Mexico,

Votes in both chambers are expected by the end of the week.

The deal was reached after weeks of tense but steady negotiations between Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill and the White House, who battled over spending priorities but who were equally determined to avoid a politically fraught government shutdown. Republicans, who control Congress and the White House, were particularly wary of a shutdown on their watch.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer released a statement Sunday evening saying the agreement is consistent with his party’s principles.

“This agreement is a good agreement for the American people, and takes the threat of a government shutdown off the table,” the New York Democrat said in a statement. “The bill ensures taxpayer dollars aren’t used to fund an ineffective border wall, excludes poison pill riders, and increases investments in programs that the middle-class relies on, like medical research, education, and infrastructure.

Trump’s demand for the border wall down payment was rejected by Democrats. They decried the controversial project — and key Trump campaign promise — as immoral and premature since Trump has not detailed plans for building the multibillion-dollar wall he had vowed Mexico would pay for anyway.

Talks were also stalled over a threat by Trump to cut off Obamacare subsidies paid to insurance companies to reduce the out-of-pocket expenses of some lower-income users of the Affordable Care Act, but Trump backed off that demand in the face of harsh criticism from Democrats.

The subsidies will stay in place as Republicans continue their long-stalled effort to repeal Obamacare, something Trump and his aides hope to revive as early as this week.

The bill does provide billions in new funds for the Pentagon and increases domestic spending too. It continues funding for Planned Parenthood, despite GOP promises to defund the abortion provider.

The deal means a government shutdown next Friday, when agencies are set to run out of money, is unlikely. Last Friday, Congress pass a one-week stopgap spending bill when it became clear negotiators needed a bit more time to finalize an agreement.

U.S. Troops Patrol Turkey-Syria Border After Turkish Strikes on Kurds

U.S. forces have begun patrolling part of the Turkey-Syria border after Turkish airstrikes in the area killed fighters closely allied to the United States.

U.S. forces, accompanied by Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) fighters, drive their armored vehicles near the northern Syrian village of Darbasiyah, on the border with Turkey on April 28, 2017. (Credit: Delil Souleiman / AFP / Getty Images)

The People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Peshmerga in Iraq — both Kurdish groups — said at least 25 of their fighters had been killed in the strikes on Tuesday. Ankara denies deliberately targeting them.

The YPG fights in the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a rebel alliance armed and supported by the United States, but is considered a terrorist group by the Turkish government.

The airstrikes — targeting the Sinjar Mountains northern Iraq and the Karachok Mountains in northeastern Syria– and the reported cross-border skirmishes since then, have added yet another complication to an already complex situation.

Now U.S. troops are trying to stop the outbreak of violence between two of their closest allies in the region from escalating.

“The patrols’ purpose is to discourage escalation and violence between two of our most trusted (counter-ISIS) partners and reinforce the U.S. commitment to both Turkey and the SDF in their fight against ISIS,” a statement from the U.S.-led joint command said.

“We ask both of our partners to focus their efforts on ISIS. ISIS poses the greatest threat to peace and stability in the region, and indeed the entire world.”

Turkey has made clear it will use force to prevent the development of a Kurdish-controlled area on its Syrian doorstep.

The patrols began on Friday and are being conducted mainly by special operations forces, a U.S. official told CNN. They are using armored vehicles and are flying U.S. flags for transparency.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was asked by Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu about the border patrol, and said Turkey is “seriously concerned to see U.S. flags in a convoy that has YPG rags on it.”

He said he would bring up the issue with President Donald Trump during his planned visit to Washington on May 16 — and called for the coordination between the U.S. and YPG to “come to an end.”

“We are two NATO member countries, and strategic allies will be seriously bothered by it. As we always say we will take care of our own business.”

Turkish officials said the airstrikes were targeting members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), considered a terrorist group by both Turkey and the United States. Seventy people were killed, they said. Turkey often describes the YPG as a Syrian branch of the PKK.

Ankara offered condolences to the Kurdish Regional Government President Masoud Barzani for the deaths of the Peshmerga forces, but there were no apologies for the deaths of the U.S.-allied YPG.

Turkish officials said they gave the U.S. and Russia warning that the strikes were coming, but a senior U.S. defense official said they were only given an hour, nowhere near enough time to evacuate the rebels.

SDF gains against ISIS

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), announced significant advances in the fight against ISIS near Raqqa, ISIS’ self-declared capital. In a statement, the SDF said it had captured six more neighborhoods in addition to the radio station building from ISIS in the city of Tabqa, west of Raqqa.

For weeks rebel fighters, backed up by U.S. forces, have fought to try and take control of the city and its dam. The Tabqa Dam is located 25 miles west of Raqqa, and supplies electric power to a wide area of Syria, according to the U.S. The area has been under ISIS control since 2013.

Retaking the dam is considered a vital step toward further isolating the area around Raqqa and eventually recapturing the city.

Erdogan bans Wikipedia, fires civil servants

Tuesday’s airstrikes came just over a week after Erdogan won a historic referendum that granted him sweeping new powers and could cement his position as Turkey’s leader until 2029. It is just one of the Turkish government’s bold moves since the election win.

On Saturday, the government issued a decree banning television matchmaking shows and blocked access to Wikipedia over content that Turkey said linked the nation to terror activity.

Turkey warned Wikipedia to remove the content, but the nonprofit encyclopedia refused, the Turkish Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications said. Once Wikipedia meets Turkey’s demands, the access ban will be lifted, it said.

Wikimedia Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports Wikipedia, said it was actively working to seek a judicial review of the decision.

Turkey — a member of NATO and a U.S. ally — appears to be taking a decided authoritarian turn when it comes to freedom of information.

It has blocked social media in the past, such as Twitter and YouTube, and the Committee to Protect Journalists regards the country as “the world’s worst jailer of journalists.”

Thousands more “opposition figures” have been arrested in the past week, in the latest stage of a state purge following a failed military coup last July that has seen tens of thousands of people detained.

On Saturday alone, nearly 4,000 civil employees were fired, according to a decree announced on a government website. The decree said soldiers and academic personnel were among the 3,974 state employees dismissed.

Eighteen academic foundations, 14 nongovernmental organizations and 13 health groups were also shuttered due to activities against national security, Anadollu reported.

Turkish voters this month passed an 18-article constitutional reform package to transform the country’s parliamentary system into a powerful executive presidency.

The plan, put forward by the ruling Justice and Development Party, gives Erdogan sweeping and largely unchecked powers.

International election monitors delivered a scathing verdict on the conduct of the referendum, but Erdogan denied his new powers were a move toward dictatorship.

Trump Invites Philippines’ Controversial President Duterte to White House

President Donald Trump invited his polarizing Philippines counterpart to the White House during a phone call in which the two leaders discussed North Korea.

Trump and President Rodrigo Duterte had a “friendly discussion” Saturday that also addressed regional security in Southeast Asia and the Philippines’ drug war, the White House said in a statement.

The statement did not provide details on when or if Duterte would visit Washington, but it said Trump is looking forward to his Philippines trip in November.

The invitation spurred questions about whether the White House should extend a visit to a leader who has been much criticized for alleged human rights abuses, such as extrajudicial killings in Duterte’s war on drugs.

White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, interviewed Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” supported the invitation, saying that outreach to the Philippines and other Asian nations is key to dealing with Pyongyang and the nuclear threat posed by North Korea.

Priebus agreed that human rights matter but he argued that the North Korean problem takes precedence.

“The issues facing us developing out of North Korea are so serious that we need cooperation at some level with as many partners in the area as we can get to make sure we have our ducks in a row,” he said. “We have got to be on the same page.”

Escalating tensions with North Korea

Tensions between the United States and North Korea have intensified, with the latter conducting another ballistic missile test Friday, just hours after the U.S. convened a United Nations meeting to demand more pressure on the isolated country.

The U.S. military has moved an aircraft carrier strike group into the region, docked a powerful nuclear submarine in South Korea and staged large military drills with South Korea and Japan.

Trump said Thursday there was “a chance that we could end up having a major, major conflict with North Korea,” but added he would prefer a diplomatic resolution.

‘Dangerous toys’

Before his phone call with Trump, Duterte said the world would suffer if the United States and North Korea — led by Kim Jong Un — could not defuse the situation.

“Everybody suffers, only because two nations are playing with their dangerous toys. It behooves a certain America, because it is the more responsible country. I’m sure President Trump by now must also be cautioning his military to just maybe hang on and not to start something they cannot control,” Duterte said.

Duterte urged the U.S. to be patient and practice restraint.

“We know that we are playing with somebody who relishes in letting go his missiles. I would not want to go into his mind because I really don’t know what is inside. But he is putting Mother Earth, the planet, on the edge,” he said.

In a statement issued after the phone call, the White House said Trump invited Duterte to the White House to discuss the U.S.-Philippines alliance “which is now heading in a very positive direction.”

“They also discussed the fact that the Philippine government is fighting very hard to rid its country of drugs, a scourge that affects many countries throughout the world.”

Duterte’s tirades

Duterte’s term has been marked with accusations of human rights violations. Since he became President last year, he has encouraged the extrajudicial killings of thousands of citizens suspected of dealing or using drugs.

He took power in June 2016 and waged an all-out “war on drugs,” which killed some 6,000 people in his first six months.

In December, he admitted to having suspected criminals killed when he was mayor of Davao City.

Duterte’s tirades have raised many eyebrows since he took office.

While on a trip to China in October, he said “America has lost,” and that he has realigned himself with China’s “ideological flow.” He later clarified his comments about relations with the United States, saying he was rather pursuing a “separation of foreign policy” from the U.S.

He also described Trump’s predecessor, President Barack Obama, as a “son of a bitch,” causing the White House to cancel planned bilateral talks.

Obama had previously raised concerns about Duterte’s controversial war on drugs and his human rights record.

However, Duterte spoke positively after a phone call with the then President-elect Trump in December, describing him as “animated.” Duterte said he told Trump that Filipinos “are tight with America.”

“He was wishing me success in my campaign against the drug problem,” he said at the time. “He understood the way we are handling it and he said there is nothing wrong with protecting your country.”

Whittier Police Arrest 2 After Shooting at Hotel; Unclear if Suspects Are Linked to ‘Random’ Shooting Spree

Two people were arrested in Whittier early Sunday following a day of shooting sprees in surrounding cities, officials reported.

The man and woman were arrested at about 8:30 a.m. after Whittier police responded to a report of a shooting at a local hotel. After investigators determined the pair matched the description of the shooting suspects, they were arrested, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported in a news release.

Officials could not confirm if the man and woman, who were in a stolen car, are the suspects wanted for a series of unprovoked shootings on Saturday in La Mirada, Pico Rivera and Whittier, that left one man dead and several others injured.

Deputies responded to a shopping center parking lot about 4:36 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a man being assaulted and possibly shot. Deputies found Chris Chow, 54, at the scene suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.

Chow shot himself during a road rage incident also involving 21-year-old Chance Givens, which started near Petaluma Road and Mall Boulevard, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

Chow was the driver of his car and Givens was a passenger in a car driven by with his girlfriend.

According to sheriff’s investigators, Chow pulled into a parking lot on Bear Valley Road, west of Amargosa Road, and Givens followed him.

Givens got out of his car and “confronted Chow about his driving,” officials said, and then began repeatedly punching Chow in the face.

Chow has a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon, and told investigators he pulled his handgun from his waistband because he feared for his safety and that of his wife.

Chow’s gun accidentally went off while he was retrieving it and resulted in him shooting himself in the leg, sheriff’s officials said.

Givens and his girlfriend fled from the scene after the shooting, but Givens was apprehended a short time later. His girlfriend returned to the scene on her own.

Givens was cited and released at the scene, sheriff’s officials said.

Chow was transported to a local hospital for a non-life threatening gunshot wound, as well as the injuries suffered during the physical assault.

SpaceX Delays Launch for Secretive Satellite for U.S. Intelligence Agency Due to Sensor Issue

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has pushed back its launch of a mysterious satellite for the U.S. intelligence community because of a sensor issue.

Liftoff, which was scheduled for Sunday morning, is now slated for Monday at 7 a.m. ET from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

SpaceX lead mechanical design engineer John Federspiel, who hosted the company’s webcast, said the SpaceX team decided to halt the launch “out of an abundance of caution” after noticing an issue with a sensor on the first-stage rocket booster.

The customer for this launch is the National Reconnaissance Office — a U.S. government agency that develops and maintains spy satellites.

The NRO says it surveys potential threats to the United States by tracking terrorists and monitoring the development of nuclear weapons in other countries. It can also provide an early warning of a potential missile strike.

The payload for the Monday launch, which is being referred to as NROL-76, is classified. SpaceX shared no details on what type of surveillance the device will perform, how large it is or where in orbit it will be delivered.

Sometime next year, SpaceX is scheduled to deliver GPS satellites into orbit for the Air Force.

Musk has fought hard to win launch contracts with the U.S. government. Boeing and Lockheed Martin’s United Launch Alliance previously held a lock on that business, and Musk filed a lawsuit against the government in 2014 for the right to bid for military contracts.

NASA is a longtime SpaceX customer. The company has conducted nine resupply missions to the International Space Station under NASA contracts since 2012.

Monday’s launch is the first for SpaceX since the historic SES-10 mission last month.

That mission marked the first time SpaceX launched a used first-stage rocket booster toward orbital space — marking a huge leap toward reaching SpaceX’s goal of drastically reducing the price of spaceflight.

The ability to reuse rockets is key. The most expensive portion of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 — which has a sticker price of $62 million — is the first-stage booster, which accounts for up to 70 percent of the cost, according to Musk.

SpaceX will use a new rocket in Monday’s mission. But the company has plans to launch as many as six more missions with used rockets this year.

And SpaceX will attempt to recover the first-stage booster after Monday’s launch, setting up that rocket to potentially complete another mission in the future.

40-Year-Old Famed Swiss Climber Ueli Steck Killed in Training Accident Near Mount Everest

The 40-year-old died when he slipped from a slope and fell into a crevasse at around 6,600 meters on Mount Nuptse, expedition organizers told CNN.

His body has been recovered and airlifted to Lukla, where the nearest airport to Mount Everest is located, Dinesh Bhattarai, of the Nepal Tourism Department said.

The “Swiss Machine” was acclimatizing himself as he planned to ascend 8,850-meter Mount Everest and Mount Lhotse next month, Mingma Sherpa, an official with expedition organizer Seven Summit Treks said.

“Quick Day from Basecamp up to 7,000m and back. I love it is such a great place here. I still believe in active aclimatisation. This is way more effective then spending nights up in the altitude,” Steck wrote on Facebook last Wednesday.

Steck was known for his speed and versatility. He set several records, including ascending the north face of the Eiger in the Bernese Alps in less than three hours.

He won the Piolet D’or, mountaineering’s highest honor in 2009 and 2014.

“My deep condolences to all of Ueli’s family, friends and admirers around the world. This is a truly tragic day in mountaineering,” famed climber Alan Arnette wrote on his website.

His death is the first casualty of the this year’s spring mountaineering season in Nepal, which is expected to involve 365 registered climbers from 39 teams, officials said.

Last year, six climbers died on Mount Everest.

In 2016 Steck and fellow mountaineer David Goettler discovered the frozen remains of world renowned climber Alex Lowe, and cameraman David Bridges, on the Tibetan mountain of Shishapangma. The men were presumed dead after an avalanche struck them in 1999.

In 2013, Steck and two other climbers attempted to climb the Everest and nearby Mount Lhotse but a fight broke out between the climbers and a group of Sherpa guides.

Victim Killed in La Mirada as Part of Apparent Shooting Spree Identified as 44-Year-Old Man: Officials

A man who was fatally shot Saturday when a man and woman randomly opened fire in La Mirada, as part of an apparent shooting spree across neighboring cities, has been identified, officials reported Sunday.

Jose Sahagun, 44, of Norwalk, was in a car Saturday afternoon in the area of Santa Gertrudes Avenue and Alicante Road in La Mirada when he was fatally shot, Los Angeles County coroner's officials announced in a news release.

He died at a local hospital.

Sahagun was killed when a series of unprovoked shootings broke out Saturday afternoon in La Mirada, Norwalk and Whittier, allegedly by a man and woman who first carjacked a green Nissan SUV in Pico Rivera about 2:15 p.m., officials said. The car was later abandoned at a park in Whittier.

Lt. Rodney Moore of the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau, said at a news conference on Saturday night it appeared Sahagun and the other victims were targeted at random.

“This crime was unprovoked, and the victim of the homicide appeared to be a completely innocent person," Moore said. "Seems to be a senseless act of violence, and there is no reason for this act of violence to have occurred that we can find at this time.”

The suspects should be considered "extremely violent," officials said.

The conditions and exact number of other victims injured were unknown.

A description of the two suspects has not yet been provided.

No other information was released.

7 Killed as Tornadoes, Storms and Flooding Hit Texas, Missouri and Arkansas

More damage and casualties could be discovered Sunday after severe flooding and tornadoes killed at least seven people and injured dozens in Missouri, Arkansas and Texas, authorities said.

At least three tornadoes touched down in east Texas, leaving five people dead, Van Zandt County officials said.

The body of a 72-year-old woman was recovered in southwestern Missouri after flood waters washed away her car.

Another woman died Saturday after a tree fell on her mobile home in De Witt, Arkansas, about 80 miles east of Little Rock, according to police.

Tornadoes ripping through north Texas left widespread destruction and more than 50 people injured, officials said.

More than 30 million Americans remain under flash flood watches and warnings Sunday as the storm moves eastward. It began hitting the southwest and Midwest states Friday.

Rainfall amounts of 4-6 inches were reported in Missouri and Texas, with some areas seeing up to 9 inches, the National Weather Service said.

Missouri

Rainstorms began Friday around the state, bringing large amounts of rainfall and causing flooding, the weather service said.

A couple was left stranded in their car when flood waters began to rise in Christian County, officials said.

Despite the husband’s efforts to rescue his wife, their car was swept away with the 72-year-old woman inside. The woman’s body was found Saturday in a field near Clever, Missouri.

At least 150 roads, mostly in southern Missouri, were closed by flooding, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

A total of 93 evacuations and 33 water rescues were reported Saturday, Gov. Eric Greitens said.

“Our standing first responders are working to protect life and property in this storm. Grateful for their work. Stay home. Stay safe,” he wrote on Twitter.

Texas

At least three tornadoes touched down east of Dallas as severe storms moved through the area, the weather service said.

The storm struck around 7:20 p.m. ET and produced considerable damage about 60 miles east of Dallas in Van Zandt and Henderson counties, according to the weather service.

Five people were found dead, but county officials said the number may go up as search and rescue efforts continue.

At least 55 patients were taken to ETMC Regional Healthcare System, hospital spokeswoman Rebecca Berkley said. One was in critical condition, and the other patients’ injuries were not life-threatening.

Multiple ambulances were at the site of the tornadoes while the search and rescue efforts continued, Berkley said.

First responders from across the state continue to comb through overturned cars and the homes destroyed by the tornadoes.

Canton High School was used as a triage center, CNN affiliate KLTV tweeted.

A tornado could have crossed Interstate 20 in Canton, flipping vehicles in a dealership and damaging a building.

Campers and families attending First Monday Trade Days, one of the largest outdoor collectibles markets in the US, were forced to take shelter in bathrooms, CNN affiliate KLTV reported.

Preliminary reports show tornadoes touched down in several north Texas towns.

A team will survey the damage on Sunday to determine the intensity of the tornadoes.

25 Years After Racial Tensions Erupted, Black and Korean Communities Reflect on L.A. Riots

Jackie Broxton remembers the day the riots swept through her city, when the only way to get back to her car after church was to brave the flames and plumes of smoke that had engulfed the surrounding streets of South L.A.

She needed to get her daughter home to Ladera Heights, and for a moment she thought she would have to walk from the First African Methodist Episcopal Church down rubble-ridden West Adams Boulevard. Luckily, a fellow parishioner offered to drive her around the corner.

“You came out of church with a sense of hope, but you got outside and it was chaos,” she said.

Broxton, 69, was among about 100 others who gathered across the street from the church at the Allen House gardens Saturday afternoon to mark the 25th anniversary of the 1992 riots. City officials and members of the African American and Korean communities gathered at the home of the oldest black congregation in L.A. to promote a single message: unity.

Pope Francis Says He Fears Military Conflict Between U.S., North Korea Would Wipe Out ‘Large Part of Humanity’

Pope Francis said Saturday he worries that rising tensions between the United States and North Korea could lead to a wide military conflict that would wipe out a “large part of humanity.”

Pope Francis looks on as he visits the Coptic Catholic College of Theology and Humanities in the southern Cairo suburb of Maadi, Egypt, on April 29, 2017. (Credit: MOHAMED EL-SHAHED/AFP/Getty Images)

He called for renewed diplomacy using third-party intermediaries and for the United Nations to take a lead role in de-escalating tensions.

The Pope, while returning to Italy from Egypt, took several questions from reporters and one asked him what he would say to world leaders at this critical moment.

Francis said in Italian that the situation “has heated up too much. I always appeal for a solution through diplomatic means.”

The pontiff, who has spoken of a “piecemeal third world war” for several years, said increased conflict would be devastating.

“It’s piecemeal but the pieces are getting larger, and are concentrated in places which were already hot,” Pope Francis said. “Today a wider war would destroy, I won’t say half of humanity, but a large part of humanity and culture. It would be terrible. I don’t think humanity today could bear it.”

Diplomacy is the best response in these times, he said.

“I think the United Nations has the duty to resume its leadership, because it has been watered down a bit,” he added.

He suggested using a nation like Norway to facilitate talks between Pyongyang and Washington, but said there are many that could fill the role. (The United States uses Sweden to represent its diplomatic interests in North Korea.)

It comes after a week in which North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile and the US military made several showings of its might, including moving a carrier group into the region.

LuLaRoe to Offer Refunds Amid Customer Complaints That Company’s Leggings ‘Rip Like Wet Toilet Paper’: Report

LuLaRoe is offering refunds to customers after numerous complaints that its leggings “rip like wet toilet paper” and get holes within hours of the first wear, Business Insider reports.

The 4-year-old company announced this week that it will issue full refunds for any defective items bought between Jan. 1, 2016, and April 24, 2017.  Customers can get their refunds through retailers or online from LuLaRoe.

The multilevel marketing company sold $1.8 billion worth of clothing in the last year, according to Business Insider.

LuLaRoe relies on tens of thousands of “independent retailers,” such as stay-at-home parents trying to make extra income, to help sell its products.

The retailers buy clothes from LuLaRoe at wholesale prices and then sell them at higher prices to friends, family members and during “LuLaRoe parties” often organized on social media. The business model is similar to those of well-known multilevel marketing companies Amway, Herbalife and Mary Kay.

Despite the gaudy sales numbers and cruises for top sellers, many are posting videos like this complaining about the product and their experiences selling it.

LuLaRoe, which says it stands behind the quality and craftsmanship of the clothing, announced two new policies, “Make Good” and “Happiness,” in an effort to keep customers happy.

Here’s how the Make Good Program works:

It covers products bought from authorized retailers in the United States between January 1, 2016 and April 24, 2017.

Customers can get a product replacement, a LuLaRoe Gift Card, or a refund for the original purchase price if the product purchased contained a defect in materials or workmanship.

The policy does not, however, cover “damage caused by accident, improper care, negligence, abuse, normal wear and tear, and the natural breakdown of colors and materials that occurs by extended use.”

Customers can return the defective product, including proof of purchase, to a LuLaRoe retailer. Visit the Make Good website for details.

LuLaRoe has also instituted a Happiness policy, which applies to purchase made on or after April 25, 2017.

It allows buyers, within 30 days of purchase, to return products for any reason to the retailer who sold them for a full refund, credit or exchange.  For 90 days, customers are able to return the products to retailers for credit or exchange.

For more information or to file claim, see LuLaRoe’s Happiness site.

Anyone who has difficulty navigating the website can call 951.808.5585.

President Trump Skips White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Holds Rally for Supporters in Pennsylvania

Watch Video

President Donald Trump is spending his 100th day in office not at the annual black-tie dinner that some say launched his bid for the White House, but with some of the people who sent him there.

Amid increasingly hostile relations between Trump and the media, Trump announced in February that he would not attend the White House correspondents’ dinner Saturday night — making him the first President since Ronald Reagan to miss the event (although Reagan, who was hospitalized after an assassination attempt at the Washington Hilton — the same hotel serving as the venue for Saturday’s dinner — gave remarks by phone).

Instead, Trump is holding a campaign-style rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, one of the states he wasn’t expected to win in November, with the aim of reminding some of his most ardent supporters that he has kept his campaign promises.

Minutes into Trump’s Harrisburg speech, he told the crowd just how much he preferred spending the evening with supporters than the Washington media.

“A large group of Hollywood actors and Washington media are consoling each other in a hotel ballroom in our nation’s capital right now,” he said. “They are gathered together for the White House correspondents’ dinner without the President.

“And I could not possibly be more thrilled than to be more than 100 miles away from the Washington swamp spending my evening with all of you and with a much, much larger crowd and much better people,” Trump added.

Although Trump is skipping the chance to mingle and joke with the media, which he has routinely lambasted as “fake news,” the days leading up to his 100th in office, a traditional milestone for measuring an administration’s early achievements, have perhaps seen him give the highest number of sit-down interviews to media outlets since he entered office.

Tension between the President and news organizations has been a hallmark of his early administration.

Several news organizations withdrew from the White House correspondents’ dinner in protest of Trump’s treatment of the media before Trump decided he would not attend. Vanity Fair and Bloomberg, which usually co-host an exclusive, star-studded after-party, have canceled that gala, while The New Yorker canceled its pre-party, which would have happened Friday.

The dinner has attracted national attention for attracting A-list celebrities, but the original purpose has been to raise money for journalism scholarships. With Trump and many celebrities skipping this year’s event, many media companies — including CNN — decided that instead of inviting celebrities as guests this year, journalism students would be their guests instead.

The White House Correspondents Association also tapped “Daily Show” comedian Hasan Minhaj — who harshly criticized Trump at the Radio and Television correspondents’ dinner last year — to perform Saturday. Speaking at the event will be Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, who were Washington Post reporters when they famously broke the Watergate story that brought down President Richard Nixon.

The last time Trump attended the dinner was in 2011, when he was a New York real estate mogul and reality-TV star who had just jumped into politics by getting involved in the “birther” movement, calling for President Barack Obama to release his birth certificate. Trump ended up being the butt of the jokes that night from comedian Seth Meyers and Obama himself.

Trump’s rally Saturday is taking place in a state that no Republican had won in a general election since George H. W. Bush in 1988. Trump will attempt to remind those who sent him to the White House that he has indeed kept his campaign-trail promises, despite evidence to the contrary.

Hours before the dinner, Trump tweeted that the “FAKE media” failed to trumpet his accomplishments. But Trump enters his 100th day without having passed any major legislation and with the lowest approval rating of any president during this time period.

Still, a recent poll by ABC News and The Washington Post showed him retaining support among his base, with 96% of people who said they voted for him saying they would do so again. Trump, who already announced his plan to run for re-election, has raised tens of millions of dollars before he marked his 100th day in the White House.

Hacker Claims to Have Stolen Latest Season of Netflix Series ‘Orange is the New Black,’ Leaked It Online

An anonymous hacker claims to have stolen the fifth season of Netflix’s hit series “Orange is the New Black” and posted most of it online after the company says it ignored a request for ransom money.

Netflix responded Saturday in a statement to CNNMoney, saying it’s “aware of the situation” and “the appropriate law enforcement authorities are involved.”

The hacker said in a note posted on Twitter Saturday that it released the first episode on Friday. The hacker’s threats were reported earlier by the Associated Press and Variety.

The hacker claimed to have requested a “modest” sum of money from Netflix to prevent the leak but that the company did not respond.

In turn, the hacker alleges to have retaliated by releasing nine more episodes of the season on a file sharing site often used to distribute pirated material.

The hacker said there are three more episodes in the season not obtained in the hack.

In a statement, Netflix said the breach occurred at a production vendor “used by several major TV studios.”

“Orange is the New Black” is one of Netflix’s goldmines, helping draw subscribers. During a recent call with investors, CEO Reed Hastings called it one of Netflix’s “most popular and most acclaimed” shows. Season five is scheduled to be released on Netflix on June 9.

The hacker said it has stolen more yet-to-be-released material from several other media companies and is demanding money from them as well.

“And to the others: there’s still time to save yourselves. Our offer(s) are still on the table – for now,” the hacker said in an online post.

President Trump Won’t Rule Out Use of Military Force Against North Korea

Watch Video

President Donald Trump would not rule out the use of military force against North Korea in an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Saturday, just hours after Pyongyang launched a missile test in defiance of international pressure.

Trump downplayed the significance of North Korea’s “small missile launch,” which occurred early Saturday. But when asked by host John Dickerson if he would consider military action in response to another nuclear test, Trump responded: “I don’t know. I mean, we’ll see.”

The missile blew up over land in North Korean territory, said US Navy Cmdr. Dave Benham, a spokesman for the US Pacific Command.

Trump cast the launch as a direct snub of China, one of North Korea’s only allies and a nation seen by the Trump administration as a potential US ally in efforts to stamp out Pyongyang’s nuclear program.

“North Korea disrespected the wishes of China & its highly respected President when it launched, though unsuccessfully, a missile today. Bad!” Trump tweeted after the launch.

Anthony Joshua Defeats Wladimir Klitschko in Thrilling World Heavyweight Fight

Anthony Joshua cemented his status as the world’s premier heavyweight with a 11th-round stoppage of Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium Saturday.

In what was billed as a clash of generations and perhaps the biggest heavyweight bout since Lennox Lewis beat Mike Tyson in 2002, the 27-year-old Joshua recovered from a knockdown in the sixth round to win one of the most thrilling fights in recent heavyweight history.

In doing so, the Englishman retained his IBF belt and gained the vacant WBA title, but the 41-year-old Klitschko pushed Joshua all the way.

Boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard tweeted: “Such an amazing fight with 2 great fighters. Lot of heart by both fighters. A lot of questions answered by @anthonyfjoshua #JoshuaKlitchsko.”

Not since Len Harvey fought Jock McAvoy for the British light-heavyweight title at White City in 1939 had so many fans flocked to a boxing match in Britain, with 90,000 pouring through the turnstiles at the national stadium.

The fight was deemed so important that it was only the third in history, and the first staged outside of the US, to be broadcast on both American network rivals HBO and Showtime. It was also televised in 140 countries.

Epic bout

Those millions watching around the world tuned in to find out if Joshua might usher in a glorious new era for an ailing division, or if the Briton had bitten off more than he could chew against the former undisputed heavyweight king, a man who had contested 68 pro fights, 28 of them with world titles on the line.

Joshua, an Olympic champion in 2012, had been labelled “the savour of heavyweight boxing” and was the clear favouite with British bookmakers.

But with only 18 professional fights to his name, and having never gone past seven rounds, the notion he would have an easy time of it against Klitschko was always questionable.

Klitschko turned pro after winning Olympic gold in 1996, when Joshua was only six years old, and first won a world heavyweight title in 2000.

His career hit the skids when he was knocked out twice in 2003 and 2004, but he won a world title again in 2006 and remained unbeaten until Tyson Fury dethroned him in 2015.

So insipid was the Ukrainian’s display against Fury, many assumed age had caught up with him and he was a spent force.

But others suspected the humiliation of that defeat might inspire him to deliver one last bravura performance — and so it proved in this epic bout.

Only Dillian Whyte had previously tested Joshua’s chin, rocking his countryman when they met in 2015, and Klitschko, who had 53 knockouts before Saturday, did not waste any time posing questions of his own.

Rendered almost punchless by the awkward Fury, Klitschko found Joshua’s jaw with a short overhand right in round two, while the champion struggled to find his range in the early stages.

Klitschko hurt Joshua with another right hand early in the fourth, before the champion fired back with a couple of his own.

Head-hunting

The fight caught fire in the fifth, Joshua stunning Klitshko with a sharp right hand, wobbling him with a left before flooring him with a barrage of punches up close.

But a desperate Klitschko, now with a cut over his left eye, came charging back and Joshua looked to be out on his feet when the bell sounded.

The British fighter was floored by a huge right hand midway through the sixth and Joshua did well to make it to his feet and even better to make it to the end of the round, having managed to evade more of Klitschko’s wild swings.

Joshua’s lack of head movement had allowed the challenger to open up a slight lead on the cards and Klitschko landed with two more juddering rights in the eighth and 10th, which Joshua did well to stand up to.

But Joshua went head-hunting in the 11th, flooring the challenger twice before referee David Fields called a halt to proceedings with Klitschko shipping blows on the ropes.

While this reporter had Klitschko ahead by two rounds when the end came, largely courtesy of his superior jab, the three ringside judges had it 96-93, 95-93 and 95-93 for Joshua.

Klitschko is now expected to retire after an illustrious career that will see him installed in the Hall of Fame one day, and his courageous efforts against a man 14 years his junior will have erased the embarrassment of defeat by Fury.

Joshua’s future options include a unification match against undefeated American Deontay Wilder, the WBC champion who has 37 knockouts from 38 pro fights; or a unification match against New Zealand’s WBO champion Joseph Parker, who was due to defend his title against Hughie Fury next month before the Briton pulled out with a back injury.

But the fight most fans want to see is Joshua against Hughie’s cousin Tyson.

Fury’s victory over Klitschko was seen as a passing of the heavyweight torch, but the Manchester fighter subsequently stumbled and dropped it.

Fury was stripped of the IBF belt for failing to defend against the mandated opponent and twice pulled out of scheduled rematches against Klitschko, before vacating the WBA and WBO belts, citing mental illness.

He is also without a boxing licence, having been stripped by the British Boxing Board of Control.

But the 28-year-old Fury, who believes he is the future of heavyweight boxing rather than Joshua, is back in training and hungry for a shot at his old titles.

For now, Joshua will take time to reflect on his achievement of beating Klitschko in only his 19th paid contest, while deciding how to spend his $19.4 million purse.

Meanwhile, fans will wonder if his might turn out to be the most exciting heavyweight reign since Tyson laid waste to all opposition during the 1980s.

One thing is certain: Joshua has breathed new life into boxing’s blue riband division, which for over a decade was characterized by Klitschko’s one-sided and often uninspiring victories over a succession of mediocre opponents.

Joshua’s feats might also spark renewed interest in the US, where boxing has slipped from the public consciousness since Tyson’s heyday.

Teen Arrested in Death of 86-Year-Old Woman Who Was Fatally Beaten on High School Track Near Sacramento

A North Highlands teen has been arrested on suspicion of murder in the fatal beating of an 86-year-old woman on a high school track near Sacramento, authorities said Friday.

The suspect, 18-year-old Neven Glen Butler, had already been in custody on an unrelated assault and elder abuse charges when he was arrested in the case, according to a news release from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

Butler is suspected of physically assaulting two women as they walked around Highlands High School track shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday, the Sheriff's Department said. The high school is located in an unincorporated part of Sacramento County.

The victim, 86-year-old Fusako Petrus, was discovered unresponsive by the time deputies arrived following an assault call. Deputies immediately began performing life-saving measures on the victim, but she was pronounced dead at the scene after personnel from the Sacramento Metro Fire Department arrived on scene.

The second victim, a 61-year-old woman, was treated at the scene for her injuries.

According to the Sheriff's Department, the younger woman was initially attacked by the 18-year-old. When Petrus heard the commotion, she intervened and tried to help her friend.

At that point, Butler allegedly sexually assaulted both women before causing the injuries that authorities say resulted in the victim's death.

He then fled the scene.

Butler was arrested later that afternoon after an unprovoked assault left a 92-year-old woman injured in the 2200 block of Northrop Avenue in Sacramento, the Sheriff's Department said.

He was initially booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of felony assault and elder abuse charges.

After he was connected to the earlier incident, he was add-booked on suspicion of murder, the release stated. Butler is ineligible for bail.

His arraignment is scheduled for Monday.

A 33-year-old woman and three children, a girl and two boys, died after a head-on crash in Victorville Friday night, according to the San Bernardino County coroner’s office.

At approximately 8:11 p.m., Mercedez Montee Breda was driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla westbound on Airport Expressway near Phantom West when she collided with a 2003 Ford Explorer that was headed in the opposite direction, the coroner’s office said in a news release on its website.

Breda, of Adelanto, was pronounced dead at the scene, as were two children.

One of the children was a girl around 12 years old, while the other was a boy approximately 3 years of age.

A second boy, believed to be about 7 years old, was rushed to a local hospital where he died shortly before 9 p.m., according the coroner’s office.

The children’s names have not yet been released.

It was also not immediately clear if the youngsters were in the same vehicle as Breda, or if any were in the Explorer.

The cause of the crash was being investigated by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, and no other details were immediately available.

At Least 300 United States Marines Return to Volatile Afghan Province

The US Marines are back in Afghanistan’s turbulent Helmand province for the first time since the NATO-led international coalition ended its combat operations three years ago.

At least 300 Marines have been deployed to the southwestern province, the site of many battles during the Afghan war. They will train, advise and assist Afghan soldiers and police.

“The Marines have landed,” Task Force Southwest said on its Facebook page. They are replacing US Army advisers.

The rural swath has a strong Taliban presence and is a center of the opium trade in the country. The US military says it wants to help Afghan forces stymie the drug trade because Taliban militants use it to help fund their operations.

The plan was announced in January during the last days of President Barack Obama’s second term. Omar Zwak, a Helmand provincial spokesman, confirmed to CNN the presence of Marines in Helmand. The Marines confirmed the deployment last week on social media.

The Marines first deployed to the province in 2001 and fought costly operations against Taliban fighters. British forces were based there as well.

The foreign troop count in Afghanistan is 8,400 from the United States and around 6,000 from NATO and allied countries.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan expressed “grave concern at the high number of recent civilian casualties.

“The people of Helmand have suffered greatly due to the armed conflict in Afghanistan, with 891 civilians killed or injured during 2016. This figure was the highest in the country in 2016 outside of Kabul,” the mission said in February.

Helmand also had a large number of civilian casualties in the first quarter of 2017.

“Kabul province had the highest number of civilian casualties due to suicide and complex attacks in Kabul city, followed by Helmand, Kandahar, Nangarhar and Uruzgan provinces,” the mission said Thursday.

Afghan forces in Helmand’s strategic town of Sangin withdrew last month from its center, effectively ceding territory to the Taliban and delivering a blow to the Afghan government and its coalition partners.

Spring offensive

The Marines’ deployment comes as the Taliban on Friday announced the start of its spring offensive, dubbed Operation Mansouri, and pledged to carry out “guerrilla warfare” and “focus on foreign forces.”

“The main focus of Operation Mansouri will be on foreign forces, their military and intelligence infrastructure and in eliminating their internal mercenary apparatus,” the Taliban said in a statement.

“These operations will involve conventional attacks, guerrilla warfare, complex martyrdom attacks, insider attacks, and use of IEDs to achieve their objectives. With the help of Allah Almighty,” it said.

Fighting the Taliban and ISIS

A Taliban attack last week on an Afghan military base killed as many as 140 people. US Defense Secretary James Mattis on Monday called the enemy fighters “barbaric.”

“If the Taliban wish to join the political process and work honestly for the positive future of Afghan people who suffered long and hard, they need only to renounce violence and reject terrorism. It is a pretty low standard to join the political process,” Mattis said during a visit to Afghanistan.

The Afghan Defense Ministry said its forces killed dozens of militants this week during fighting across several provinces, including Helmand. Many of those killed were identified as ISIS fighters.

Two US Army rangers were killed Tuesday in a raid targeting an ISIS faction in Nangarhar province in the east. They might have been struck by friendly fire in the battle, the Pentagon said.

The target of the mission was an Islamic State of Iraq and Syria Khurasan compound and ISIS emir Abdul Hasib, according to the Pentagon.

In the raid, rangers and Afghan commandos were dropped by helicopter into Nangarhar province, within a mile or so of the site where the US on April 13 dropped the MOAB, or “mother of all bombs.”

That bomb wiped out an ISIS tunnel complex and killed 94 ISIS militants.

4 Men, Teenager Arrested in Connection With Fatal Shooting of 21-Year-Old Apple Valley Man in Front of His Grandmother’s House

Four men and a 17-year-old male have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man gunned down while delivering a birthday present to his grandmother in Apple Valley, sheriff’s officials reported Saturday.

Johnny La Soya, 21, who was fatally shot in Apple Valley on April 26, 2017, is seen in a GoFundMe page.

Anthony Espinoza, 23, Rae Espinoza, 19, Joseph Martinez, 20 and Devin Ross, 18, were arrested Friday and booked on murder charges into the Sheriff’s High Desert Detention Center, while the unnamed 17-year-old male was also arrested and is expected to be booked into Juvenile Hall for the deadly shooting of Johnny La Soya Jr. on Wednesday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a released statement.

La Soya was gunned down outside of his grandmother’s house in the 22300 block of Hurons Avenue on Wednesday at about 5:40 p.m.

In a GoFundMe page created to help pay for his burial, La Soya’s cousin said the fatal shooting happened as he stopped by his grandmother’s house to give her a birthday present.

According to sheriff’s homicide detectives, the suspects drove up to the grandmother’s home and began arguing with La Soya.

It’s unclear what the argument was about, but soon after it started one of the suspect’s shot La Soya at least once.

He died a short time later at a local hospital.

The suspects drove away from the house in two grey compact vehicles.

Officials said the five arrests were made following the course of a two-day investigation comprised of investigators from the Sheriff’s Homicide Detail, Regional Gang Team and Specialized Enforcement Division.

No other information was released.

Thousands Expected to Protest President Trump’s Climate Policies in D.C. March

Thousands of people who support action on climate change are expected to brave the sweltering heat Saturday and march through the nation’s capital as part of the People’s Climate March.

Crowds gathered in Washington DC to march against climate change and the Trump administration’s stance on environmental issues. (Credit: CNN)

“We resist. We build. We rise,” a slogan for the event reads.

With temperatures expected to hit 90 degrees, the march is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. near the Capitol. Protesters then plan to move to the White House and end up at the Washington Monument, according to the proposed route map.

Hundreds of sister marches are also planned across the US and around the world.

They’re being held to coincide with President Donald Trump’s 100th day in office and take on his environmental policies.

“We’ve already seen just how effective people power is against this administration: Trumpcare? Withdrawn. Muslim ban? Blocked,” the group’s website says.

“Now Trump’s entire fossil fuel agenda is next, and we believe that the path forward is based in the voice of the people — which is expressed first and foremost through mass protests and mass marches.”

The protest continues the trend of heightened liberal activism since Trump’s election, best seen in the Women’s March in January and the protests at airports to combat the administration’s travel ban.

‘Trump is undoing everything Obama did’

On Facebook, about 12,000 people have RSVP’d they are attending. Celebrities, including Leonardo DiCaprio and former Vice President Al Gore, are expected to march as well.

Michele Holmes, from Harlem, is one of those activists. She joined about 200 others who climbed into four buses traveling to Washington early Saturday to join in the march.

“Trump is undoing everything Obama did. He doesn’t realize climate change impacts everyone. It impacts him,” Holmes told CNN. “Change is inevitable, and only we can solve it — the impact is just changing the way we live.”

Joining the march in Washington, 16-year-old Olivia Springberg tried to make the issue of climate change personal to Trump. She held a sign that warned how rising sea levels could affect Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida resort.

The target for these protesters is the Trump administration’s climate policies, which have prioritized economic growth over environmental concerns.

In Trump’s first 100 days, the Environmental Protection Agency has moved swiftly to roll back Obama-era regulations on fossil fuels while also facing significant planned budget cuts. Trump also has approved the Keystone XL pipeline, which the Obama administration had blocked.

Pope Francis Preaches Tolerance While Celebrating Mass at Stadium in Egypt

Pope Francis sent a message of tolerance and co-existence as he celebrated Mass at a stadium in Egypt on Saturday.

The Pope arrived is in Egypt on a trip designed to forge Muslim-Christian brotherhood and show solidarity with the country’s persecuted Coptic Christian minority.

His visit to the North African country comes nearly two weeks after the Palm Sunday bombing of two Coptic churches, which left at least 45 people dead.

Heavy security surrounded the Pope as he entered Cairo’s Air Defense Stadium in an open golf cart.

He waved at worshipers and stopped momentarily to bless a group of children in costume. Parts of the stadium stands were draped with the Pope’s photo as well as Egyptian and Vatican flags.

The Pope said “religiosity means nothing unless it is inspired by deep faith and charity.”

“True faith is one that makes us more charitable, more merciful, more honest and more humane,” he said.

“God is pleased only by a faith that is proclaimed by our lives, for the only fanaticism believers can have is that of charity! Any other fanaticism does not come from God and is not pleasing to him,” he added.

The Pope started his Mass with the “As-Salaam Alaikum,” the traditional Muslim greeting in Arabic that means “Peace be upon you,” and ended it with “al-Masih qam! Bi-l-haqiqa qam! (Christ is risen! He is truly risen)”.

A Vatican spokesman said 15,000 people attended the mass at the stadium, which holds 30,000.

The Pope is expected to visit Egypt’s small Catholic community later Saturday.

‘Incompatibility of violence and faith’

On Friday, Francis stressed the importance of unity between Muslims and Christians to shape world peace.

“Let us say once more a firm and clear ‘No!’ to every form of violence, vengeance and hatred carried out in the name of religion or in the name of God,” the Pope said in Italian in a speech at a peace conference at Al-Azhar University, the premier seat of high learning among Sunni Muslims.

Francis met with Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb and became the first pontiff to visit the institution since Pope John Paul II in 2000.

The Pope and the Grand Imam spoke at the closing of the International Conference for Peace, organized by Al-Azhar. When he greeted the Grand Imam, the Pope called him “my brother” and the men sat side by side at the conference.

He addressed a familiar theme: the roots of violent extremism.

Eliminating poverty and exploitation

Francis opened his speech Friday with “As-Salaam Alaikum,” after the imam’s address.

“In order to prevent conflicts and build peace, it is essential that we spare no effort in eliminating situations of poverty and exploitation where extremism more easily takes root, and in blocking the flow of money and weapons destined to those who provoke violence,” he said.

Francis called for an end to the “proliferation of arms” and lambasted “demagogic forms of populism.”

“If they are produced and sold, sooner or later they will be used,” he said. “Only by bringing into the light of day the murky maneuverings that feed the cancer of war can its real causes be prevented. National leaders, institutions and the media are obliged to undertake this urgent and grave task.”

El-Tayeb addressed the status of faith in modern life.

“With all these accomplishments [of the 21st century], how come peace has become a lost paradise? The answer, I assume, is that modern civilization has ignored religion,” he said.

President receives Francis

The Pope was greeted earlier in the day on the tarmac at Cairo International Airport by Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail, Egyptian state TV showed.

He then was received by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, at the Ittihadiya Presidential Palace in Cairo.

After the peace conference, the Pope and the Egyptian President arrived at Al-Masa Hotel and addressed religious and political dignitaries.

The Pope, again speaking in Italian, focused on Egypt’s role in fighting terrorism in the region, evoking incidents from its biblical and modern history. He ceremonially greeted all Egyptian people, including minority Christians — Coptic Orthodox, Greek Byzantines, Armenian Orthodox, Protestants and Catholics.

12-point declaration

Pope Tawadros II, head of Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox Church, then greeted Francis at St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo’s Abbassiya district, state TV said. They walked together in procession and took part in ecumenical prayers at the adjacent church of St. Peter, the site of a deadly blast in December that left at least 23 people dead.

Francis commended the efforts of Tawadros II, whom he called a brother, in organizing meetings between the Coptic Orthodox and Catholic churches.

Francis and Tawadros II signed a joint, 12-point declaration reiterating the fraternity between their churches. “Let us intensify our unceasing prayer for all Christians in Egypt and throughout the whole world, and especially in the Middle East,” the declaration states.

The announcement was made six days after the robbery occurred at the Coliseum station in Oakland, in which youngsters were spotted hastily hopping over fare gates before boarding a Dublin-bound train after 9:20 p.m., then swarming passengers and robbing six of them by force. Another was robbed on the platform.

Authorities said a purse, duffel bag and five cellphones were taken during the robberies. At least two passengers were treated by paramedics for face and head injuries, police said.

Health Officials Warn Tea Made From Deer Antlers May Cause Botulism

Tea made from deer antlers may have sickened two Orange County residents with botulism, a serious illness caused by a bacteria that can cause paralysis, breathing difficulty and is potentially deadly.

One adult has a confirmed case of botulism, and the other has a suspected case, the Orange County Health Care Agency said Friday. An investigation by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health suggests the botulism illnesses may be connected with drinking deer antler tea obtained in March.

Health officials said anyone who purchased products in March should dispose of them. Photographs of the package released by L.A. County health officials feature illustrations of deer and roots.

Botulism is an illness caused by a toxin made by a bacterium. Symptoms of the illness include:
