Man Killed After Hammer Attack in Costa Mesa; 1 in Custody: Police

Police in Costa Mesa are investigating a homicide after a man was found dead following witnesses’ report that one man was seen hitting another with a hammer on Wednesday morning.

A suspect was arrested and transported to the hospital for minor injuries, according to a Costa Mesa Police Department news release.

Witnesses described a gruesome scene in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

Police were called the area of Vanguard Way and Danbury Lane about 8:45 a.m. for a report of a man hitting another man with a hammer, the release stated. Witnesses told police the victim was assaulted while seated in a vehicle.

The first officer found the victim lying on his back, injured, and another man standing nearby unarmed. When the officer spoke the the second man, he ran away.

The officer followed, using a Taser to subdue the man, while another officer arrived and handcuffed the man. He was arrested on suspicion of murder.

The victim was found to be dead. Aerial video from Sky5 showed him on the pavement next to parked cars, apparently naked.

The weapon believed to be used in the homicide was found in the victim’s vehicle, police said.

The relationship between the two men, both described as being in their 50s, is unknown, as is the motive.
