A hoard of voters turned out Saturday at five early voting locations open this weekend across the L.A. area, waiting hours to cast their ballots.
Complete data on California's absentee and early voting are not yet available, but so far 2.3 million vote by mail ballots have been cast countywide, compared to a total of 1.3 million for the 2012 presidential election. Nearly 5 million people are registered to vote this year in L.A. County.
"I have to say the stakes are really high," said Mar Vista resident Blaine Zuckerman, who turned out to cast his vote at West Los Angeles College in Culver City. "I won’t lie and say I haven’t had times where I was more impassioned about who I was voting for, but I think I’m one of those people who also knows who they’re voting against."
While this election is no doubt special, there has been a general increase in absentee voting in California. In the June primary nearly 70 percent of ballots statewide were cast before Election Day.
However, as voter Alexander Walker of Pacific Palisades pointed out, the names at the top of the ticket don't necessarily matter most.
"I think it’s pretty important, especially with the Supreme Court nominations up in the air," he said. "A lot of propositions are important too. In many situations I think they actually affect us more than the outcome of the presidential election."
Polling places are open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. this weekend and next in Culver City, North Hollywood, Torrance, West Covina and Lancaster.
