A driver suspected of crashing into a bicyclist in Santa Ana, then fleeing the scene, only to return a few hours later and turn himself in has been arrested, police reported.
Christopher Carrasco, 20, was taken into custody late Thursday following the 9:45 p.m. crash on Fairview and 17th streets, the Santa Ana Police Department reported. Witnesses told police a white truck and a car were racing northbound on Fairview Street when the male bicyclist was struck by one of the vehicles.
Police said Carrasco parked his car, ran home and told his sister what happened. She convinced him to turn himself in, and two hours after the crash Carrasco went back to the scene.
Police told KTLA the bicyclist did not have a light and was not wearing a helmet when he tried to cross the street.
The bicyclist was listed in stable condition and underwent surgery at a local hospital, according to police.
The cause of the crash was under investigation.
KTLA’s Stephen Acosta and Nidia Becerra contributed to this story.
