A cold weather alert for Antelope Valley and Los Angeles county mountain areas has been extended as low temperatures continue.
The county’s interim health officer announced the extended alert — through Friday for the Antelope Valley and through Wednesday for county mountains.
Wind chills are expected to fall below freezing.
“Children, the elderly, and people with disabilities or special medical needs are especially vulnerable during such cold snaps,” said interim health officer Dr. Jeffrey Gunzenhauser. “Extra precaution should be taken to ensure they don’t get too cold when they are outside.”
He warned people not stove, barbecues or ovens to heat themselves due to risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The county’s winter shelter program began last week. Locations and transportation info is on the Homeless Services Authority’s website.
