A beaver was “apprehended” after leaving a trail of “property damage” while appearing to look through Christmas decorations at a dollar store in Charlotte Hall, Maryland, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
Sheriff’s Cpl. Yingling responded to an “interesting” call Monday when the suspect — identified only as a beaver — allegedly caused some property damage to the store, according to a tongue-in-cheek post on the office’s Facebook page.
The beaver then “attempted to flee the area” but was later safely captured by animal control, the post stated.
Photos shared on the office’s Facebook page showed the cute critter appearing to peruse items in a holiday decorations aisle, including boxes containing fake Christmas trees. Some decorations could be seen on the ground as the beaver made its way through the aisle.
The initial post was shared thousands of times in less than 24 hours.
“All joking aside, the beaver was safely rescued by animal control & was released to a wildlife rehabilitator,” the Sheriff’s Office tweeted.
