9 Dead, More Unaccounted for After Fire Breaks Out at Oakland Warehouse Party

A fire broke out at a mixed residential and work building in Oakland on Friday night, killing at least nine people and leaving about 25 people missing, city Fire Chief Teresa Deloach Reed said.

“A majority of the fatalities were found up on the second floor,” Reed told reporters Saturday morning. “It must have been a very fast-moving fire.”

It only took about 10 minutes to grow into a three-alarm fire, according to the Oakland Police Department’s Twitter account.

A large gathering had been taking place Friday night at the building at 1305 31st Ave., CNN affiliate KRON-TV reported, citing fire officials.

The fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. with up to 70 revelers inside the building, according to the East Bay Times. The party had been organized by Los Angeles-based electronic music label 100% Silk, Pitchfork reported.

Details on what led to the fire weren’t immediately available.
