A sheriff’s deputy and courthouse security officer opened fire on Cueva, 55, after allegedly finding him attacking the woman on the Chatsworth courthouse steps, stabbing her several times in the upper torso, officials said. Both individuals were transported to a nearby hospital, where Cueva was pronounced dead.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was in critical but stable condition on Monday.

She had apparently gone to the courthouse with her estranged husband that day to deal with an outstanding traffic ticket, according to sheriff’s Lt. Mike Rosson. Witnesses said the two were seen arguing when the woman pulled up in her black Audi with Cueva in the passenger seat.

The man began stabbing her, and she bolted from the car searching for help, witnesses told KTLA. He allegedly chased he and continued the attack, even after deputies were on scene.

Cueva refused to halt the attack and was shot at least once in the chest, Rosson said. It is unclear whether it was the deputy’s or security officer’s shot that struck Cueva.

It is unknown where he resided.

The courthouse was closed the remainder of the Monday. It had planned to reopen Tuesday, but calls to the building went unanswered.
