Security Footage Shows Person Altering Hollywood Sign to Read ‘Hollyweed’: LAPD

Los Angeles residents awoke Sunday morning to see that one thing, at least, looked different in the New Year: the Hollywood sign.

Photos shared on social media showed the iconic sign modified to read, “HOLLYWeeD.”

Security footage taken around midnight Saturday showed a “lone individual” climbing up Mount Lee, scaling the sign using the built-in ladders and hanging tarpaulins over the sign’s O’s to change them to E’s, said Sgt. Guy Juneau of the LAPD’s Security Services division.

“So the sign now reads ‘Hollyweed,’” Juneau said. It could be a New Year’s prank, he said, or the work of “a thrill-seeker.”

Queen Elizabeth II Misses New Year’s Day Church Service Due to ‘Heavy Cold’: Officials

Queen Elizabeth did not attend a New Year’s Day church service as she continues to recover from a “heavy cold,” a Buckingham Palace spokesman said.

Despite her absence at church, the monarch is “up” and “working” Sunday, a royal source told CNN. The source added that the Queen is “taking red boxes,” a reference to the famous red boxes that contain government documents and other information and business pertaining to her role as head of state.

The 90-year-old monarch and her husband, Prince Philip, have been under the weather for most of holiday season, having previously delayed their traditional journey to their country home, Sandringham House in Norfolk, after falling ill before Christmas.

However, Prince Philip had recovered enough to attend church on Christmas Day, alongside his son Prince Charles, his grandson Prince Harry and other members of the royal family. The Queen remained indoors to recuperate from the persisting illness, according to an earlier Buckingham Palace statement.

It was the first year that the monarch has missed a Christmas Day church service since she began celebrating the holidays at Sandringham back in 1998.

Despite remaining fairly active in royal life, Britain’s longest-serving monarch has been relinquishing some of her duties in recent months. In December, Buckingham Palace announced that the Queen will step down as the head of several charities and bodies at the end of her 90th birthday year, handing the reins to other members of the royal family in the coming months.

“Her Majesty is currently Patron of more than 600 organisations and has enjoyed a close and active association with a great number of them throughout her reign,” a statement from Buckingham Palace said.

“Her Majesty will continue to serve as Patron to hundreds of charities and institutions but will now share this work with her family,” it added.

This decision follows a similar move by her husband, who resigned from a number of patronages on the occasion of his 90th birthday in 2011.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn, Ivanka Trump Working Together to Make Child Care Affordable

Rep. Marsha Blackburn says she has been discussing legislation to make child care more affordable for working Americans with the President-elect’s daughter, Ivanka Trump.

“I am delighted to see that we’re looking at options for tax credits, tax incentives, ways for moms and dads to be able to write-off this child-care cost,” Blackburn told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union,” which aired Sunday.

“One of the things that is most troubling as a mom in the workforce is finding child care and being certain that your children are safe and well cared for and not feeling like they are going to miss out on things because you put yourself on the guilt bus,” she added.

The Tennessee Republican, who owns a small business, said she had concerns about child care as she was raising her kids.

“It was so very difficult. It’s one of the things I struggled with as my children were growing up,” she said.

President-elect Donald Trump’s daughter met this fall with members of Congress to discuss child care legislation before the election. The business mogul has said he would attempt to make child care expenses tax deductible for families earning less than $500,000. Trump also called for establishing tax-free accounts to be used for child care and child enrichment activities.

Blackburn told Tapper she backed those proposals.

“You want to know your children are well cared for,” she said. “And there ought to be a way to have a savings account that you can start saving from on day one to help with those costs, because you know, it’s important to your life/work balance and the life of your family.”

2 Killed, Several Injured in Multi-Car Pileup on Interstate 5 Near Bakersfield; Freeway Reopened After 8 Hour Closure

Two people died and several others were injured Saturday after two cars collided, triggering a pileup of at least 20 vehicles on a foggy stretch of southbound Interstate 5 near Bakersfield, California Highway Patrol officials reported.

A 50-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman from Manteca died in the crash, CHP public information officer Brian Moore said. Their names were not released.

The couple were in one of two passenger vehicles that crashed just before 9 a.m., Moore said.

Soon after the initial crash, a tractor-trailer struck both vehicles, triggering a series of at least 12 other crashes involving 20 or more vehicles altogether, including recreational vehicles and big-rigs, he said. Several people were injured in the chain reaction, and at least one had major injuries, Moore said.
