Twitter Says All 336 Million Users Should Change Their Passwords Due to Bug
Twitter has recommended its more than 336 million users change their passwords.
The company announced on Thursday it discovered a bug that saved user passwords on an internal log without proper encryption.
Twitter said it has since fixed the issue. Although the company said there is no evidence passwords have been leaked or misused, it is urging its users to update their passwords.
“As a precaution, consider changing your password on all services where you’ve used this password,” the company tweeted.
Twitter is prompting users to change their passwords via a pop-up window on the site that explains the nature of the bug and links to their Settings page.
Twitter did not specify how many passwords were stored in the internal log.
The company declined to comment on when the bug was discovered, how long it had been storing passwords in this manner and how many passwords were affected. But it reiterated to CNN “this is not a breach.”
CEO Jack Dorsey said in a tweet the company believed it was important to “be open about this internal defect.”
Meanwhile, Twitter CTO Parag Agrawal tweeted an apology for the issue.
“We are sharing this information to help people make an informed decision about their account security. We didn’t have to, but believe it’s the right thing to do,” he said.

Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski Expelled From Film Academy
Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski are no longer members of one of Hollywood’s most important organizations.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, the group behind the Academy Awards, has voted to expel the actor and director from its membership, according to a statement from the organization which cited its conduct standards.
“The Board continues to encourage ethical standards that require members to uphold the Academy’s values of respect for human dignity,” a statement from the Academy read.
Cosby was found guilty last week on three counts of aggravated indecent assault. Although he is more strongly associated with television, Cosby was a long-time member of the Academy for his work in film but never won an Oscar.
Polanski fled the US in 1978 after being charged with statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl. He has continued filmmaking in Europe. He won the Oscar in 2003 for directing the World War II drama “The Pianist.”
No additional information was immediately available about the pair being expelled from the Academy.

Costa Mesa Joins Opposition to California Sanctuary State Law
At a contentious City Council meeting Wednesday night, Costa Mesa became the latest Orange County community to declare its official opposition to Senate Bill 54, the so-called sanctuary law that provides expanded protections for immigrants who have entered the country without permission.
The 3-2 vote to adopt a resolution against SB 54 prompted cheers and chants of “USA! USA!” from opponents of the law, who waited in City Hall until roughly 1 a.m. for the council’s vote.
Mayor Sandy Genis, Mayor Pro Tem Allan Mansoor and Councilman Jim Righeimer voted in favor of the resultion. Council members Katrina Foley and John Stephens cast the dissenting votes.
Opponents of the resolution responded with cries of outrage.

Giuliani’s Statements About Trump Catch White House Communication Officials Off Guard
Rudy Giuliani’s cable rollout as a member of President Donald Trump’s legal team, and the torrent of statements he made Wednesday night, caught many in the White House off guard and flat-footed, highlighting the continued chaotic nature of the President’s communications strategy.
Giuliani told CNN Thursday he and Trump are in sync.
“You won’t see daylight between me and the President,” Giuliani said in an interview. “The strategy is to get everything wrapped up and done with this so that it doesn’t take on a life of its own.”
The former New York City mayor said he spoke to Trump before and after his explosive announcement on Fox News Wednesday night when he said the President had reimbursed his attorney Michael Cohen for the $130,000 payment to the porn actress Stormy Daniels.
But Giuliani conceded that White House officials were caught off guard by his comments.
“They were, there was no way they wouldn’t be,” he told CNN Thursday. “The President is my client, I don’t talk to them.”
Case in point: White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley had pre-taped an interview with Fox News Wednesday that was set to air in the 11 p.m. ET hour. But after Giuliani announced Trump had in fact paid back Cohen for the hush money payment, Gidley had to return to the studio for a live interview.
Gidley told Fox host Shannon Bream that he had “no idea of the topics of the show” and referred questions to the President’s outside counsel.
“I’m not an attorney,” Gidley told Bream. “I just work at the White House.”
Taken aback
Several White House officials were also taken aback by Giuliani’s dramatic interview Wednesday night. One remarked that Giuliani undermined the administration’s entire defense strategy when it came to not just Daniels, but also former FBI Director James Comey and the special counsel, all in the span of a single interview.
One senior White House official told CNN that Giuliani’s performance came off as “clumsy” to them.
Two White House officials told CNN managing the situation is now out of their control, with several others pointing to how Giuliani and Trump have their own conversations before Giuliani goes on cable news, further proving that the President is his own communications director.
A source familiar with the conversation confirmed that Trump was not at all upset about Giuliani’s performance.
In an apparent sign of his support, Trump reiterated Giuliani’s comments Thursday morning in a stunning string of tweets where he said he had paid a monthly retainer to Cohen, which he said meant the payment could not be considered a campaign contribution or finance violation. He also denied having an affair with Daniels.

Driver Crashes Into Home, Lands on Truck After Losing Control of Vehicle in Riverside
An out of control driver slammed into two parked cars and a home before eventually landing on top of a pickup truck during a violent crash in Riverside late Thursday night.
The crash occurred near the intersection of Comer and Mission Inn avenues, City of Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief Tony Perna said.
A witness said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed about 11:15 p.m. when it failed to navigate a turn and ended up driving through a yard.
The vehicle collided with the side of the home, then struck two parked cars before landing on top of another vehicle in a front yard, Perna said.
A man inside the home heard the crash and came outside.
“This car was laying on top of my new truck,” said the man, who was getting ready to go to bed before the crash occurred.
The driver was extricated using the Jaws of Life before being taken to a local hospital for treatment. No word on the driver’s condition was immediately available.
The extrication was made more difficult because the vehicle was elevated and needed to be stabilized before the patient could be removed, Perna said.
A resident inside the home struck by the vehicle said glass and part of a wall broken in the crash would have landed on his grandmother had she been in her bed at the time.
Officials determined the structure was OK following the crash.
The cause of the crash was under investigation.

Backers of California Privacy Ballot Initiative Submit Petition Signatures
Proponents of a measure that would require companies to disclose the data they collect from consumers will submit signatures Thursday on petitions to qualify the initiative for the November ballot, paving the way for a heated battle over privacy.
The initiative would require businesses to inform customers of what personal information they are gathering from them and give them the option to opt out of having that data sold or shared to third parties. It also would increase fines and penalties for companies that fail to protect the data against breaches.
Rick Arney, co-author of the proposed California Consumer Privacy Act, said support for the measure widened when federal officials opened an investigation into how a data firm, Cambridge Analytica, accessed the personal information of millions of Facebook users without their knowledge to help elect President Trump.

LAPD Chief Beck Calls for Change to Controversial Retirement Program
Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck acknowledged a need to reform a controversial pension program that pays city police officers and firefighters nearly double at the end of their careers while allowing them to take lengthy injury leaves, costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.
In remarks at a budget meeting this week, Beck said concerns about injury leaves for those in the Deferred Retirement Option Plan — better known as DROP — were “well-founded” and expressed support for changing the policy to “de-incentivize” taking injury leave while in the program.
“Unfortunately, when the program was crafted 15 years ago, that wasn’t done,” Beck said of DROP.
Beck’s remarks were in response to a Los Angeles Times investigation that showed that nearly half of DROP participants in the previous decade missed work while in the program because of injuries ranging from cumulative ailments like carpal tunnel syndrome and high blood pressure to a fall from a defective office chair.

Alleged Golden State Killer to Appear in Court as Attorneys Seek to Halt DNA Collection
The former California police officer believed to be the Golden State Killer is to appear in court Thursday as his lawyers seek to block prosecutors' efforts to collect more of his DNA in their investigation of 12 murders and more than 50 rapes in the 1970s and 1980s.
A public defender for Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, has asked a Sacramento court to stop prosecutors from taking more fingerprints, DNA evidence and photos of the defendant's body because their search warrant was obtained before his arrest and arraignment last week.
In the separate motion, prosecutors argued that the evidence they are seeking is not "testimonial in nature" and that the search warrant must first be challenged before the judge who issued it.
Decades after a crime spree that sowed fear in communities throughout the state, authorities last week tracked down the suspect by comparing genetic profiles from genealogy websites to crime scene DNA, according to prosecutors.
DNA from a crime scene was matched to genetic material from a relative who was registered on genealogy sites, and authorities later obtained a discarded sample of DeAngelo's DNA.
DeAngelo, a former police officer, Vietnam veteran and a mechanic, was a reclusive neighbor in Citrus Heights, a town about 16 miles northeast of the California capital, according to residents.
In the early 1970s, DeAngelo worked as a police officer in Exeter and Auburn, California. Authorities have said some of the alleged crimes of the Golden State Killer overlapped with DeAngelo's time as a police officer.
DeAngelo was fired from his law enforcement job in 1979 for shoplifting a can of dog repellent and a hammer from a drugstore.
He then lived what appears to be a quiet life. He worked as a mechanic at the distribution center of a Modesto-based supermarket chain for 27 years until he retired last year, a spokeswoman for the company said.
Neighbors have said DeAngelo mostly kept to himself and sometimes yelled at people who got too close to his fence, but they said he had become a recluse in recent years.
Speaking in a feeble, barely audible voice and sitting in a wheelchair, DeAngelo appeared in court last Friday but did not enter a plea to the murder charges he faces in the 1978 deaths of Katie and Brian Maggiore.
The defendant is "depressed and right now, fragile," defense attorney Diane Howard said last week. DeAngelo spoke only a few words at the hearing, telling the judge he would accept a court-appointed attorney.

More Than 800 West Hollywood Buildings at Risk of Collapsing in a Big Quake
West Hollywood has identified more than 800 buildings that could be at risk of damage or collapse in a major earthquake, part of a comprehensive effort to inventory them and require retrofits.
About 90% of the 821 buildings on the list are thought to be wood-frame structures, such as apartments with carports on the ground floor. The rest are believed to be concrete or steel. Officials emphasized that properties on the list are not necessarily unsafe, and that further study will be required to determine whether retrofitting is needed.
West Hollywood is one of several California cities attempting to strengthen buildings before the next major temblor, joining Santa Monica and Los Angeles among others. The Hollywood fault runs along the city’s famed Sunset Strip, and buildings listed as needing further study include landmark hotels like the Andaz West Hollywood, Mondrian, Standard and Sunset Tower.
City officials say the mandatory retrofit law is needed not only to protect those in West Hollywood’s apartments, offices and hotels, but also to keep rent-controlled affordable housing from being destroyed when the next earthquake strikes.

Bill Cosby Was a Victim of ‘Mob Justice,’ Wife Camille Cosby Says in Blistering Statement
Exactly one week after her husband was convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault, Bill Cosby’s wife released a strongly worded statement charging that the key witness in the trial gave false testimony and the media violated the Constitution in its coverage of the story.
In the long, searing statement, posted on her husband’s official social media accounts, Camille Cosby went after Bill Cosby’s accuser, the district attorney, the media, and appeared to compare her husband to Emmett Till, a black teenager who was killed in Mississippi in 1955 for allegedly whistling at a white woman.
“This is mob justice, not real justice,” she wrote. “This tragedy must be undone not just for Bill Cosby, but for the country.”
Bill Cosby was found guilty last week on three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and sexually assaulting Constand in 2004. Of the dozens of women who have accused the comedian of similar acts, only Constand’s allegations resulted in criminal charges.
On Andrea Constand:
In her statement, Camille Cosby said that Andrea Constand’s testimony during the trial “was unsupported by any evidence and riddled with innumerable, dishonest contradictions.”
She said that not all accusers are “truthful,” pointing to white women who have accused black men — such as Emmett Till — of crimes they did not commit.
On the media:
The comedian’s wife blamed the media for disseminating “propaganda” regarding the case, and said that “unproven accusations evolved into lynch mobs, who publicly and privately coerced cancellations of Bill Cosby’s scheduled performances; syndications of ‘The Cosby Show;’ rescissions (sic) of honorary degrees and a vindictive attempt to close an exhibition of our collection of African American art in the Smithsonian Museum of African Art.”
“Bill Cosby was labeled as guilty because the media and accusers said so… period,” she wrote. “Are the media now the people’s judges and juries?”
On the District Attorney:
She also called for a criminal investigation of the Montgomery County District attorney and his team, who she said tried her husband solely for career advancement. “If they can do this to Mr. Cosby, they can do so to anyone.”
Read Camille Cosby’s full statement below:
“We the people” are the first three words of our nation’s Constitution, but who were those people in 1787? Dr. Howard Zinn, the renowned, honest historian, states in his best-selling book, A People’s History of the United States: “The majority of the 55 men who framed the Constitution were men of wealth in land, slaves, manufacturing or shipping.” Clearly, most people were not included in that original draft of the Constitution; no women, Native Americans, poor white men; and, absolutely, no enslaved Africans.
What have the masses of people done who are treated as outcasts by “we the people”? They, through the purity of the unceasing human spirit, forced 27 amendments to the Constitution that have guaranteed fundamental rights to all people…finally doing what the framers should have done in 1787.
Now enters an American citizen, Bill Cosby. The overall media, with their frenzied, relentless demonization of him and unquestioning acceptance of accusers’ allegations without any attendant proof, have superseded the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, which guarantee due process and equal protection, and thereby eliminated the possibility of a fair trial and unbiased jury. Bill Cosby was labelled as guilty because the media and accusers said so… period. And the media ensured the dissemination of that propaganda by establishing barricades preventing the dissemination of the truth in violation of the protections of the First Amendment. Are the media now the people’s judges and juries?
Since when are all accusers truthful? History disproves that…for example, Emmett Till’s accuser immediately comes to mind. In 1955, she testified before a jury of white men in a Mississippi courtroom that a 14-year-old African American boy had sexually assaulted her, only to later admit several decades later in 2008 that her testimony was false. A more recent example
is the case of Darryl Hunt, an African American who in 1984 was wrongfully convicted for the rape and murder of a white woman, only to have DNA evidence establish in 1994 that he did not commit the crime. Nonetheless he was held in prison until 2004, serving almost twenty years behind bars, until the true rapist confessed to the crimes. These are just two of many tragic instances of our justice system utterly and routinely failing to protect African Americans falsely accused in so-called courts of law and the entirely unfair court of public opinion.
In the case of Bill Cosby, unproven accusations evolved into lynch mobs, who publicly and privately coerced cancellations of Bill Cosby’s scheduled performances; syndications of “The Cosby Show”; rescissions of honorary degrees and a vindictive attempt to close an exhibition of our collection of African American art in the Smithsonian Museum of African Art. Although the Smithsonian’s hierarchy did not capitulate, a disclaimer was posted on the exterior of that Museum. And all of that occurred before the trial even started.
The worst injustices, however, have been carried out in the Pennsylvania Montgomery County Courthouse. Three criminal charges, promised during an unethical campaign for the district attorney’s office, were filed against my husband…all based on what I believe to be a falsified account by the newly elected district attorney’s key witness. I firmly believe her recent testimony during trial was perjured; as was shown at trial, it was unsupported by any evidence and riddled with innumerable, dishonest contradictions. Moreover, Bill Cosby’s defense team introduced the testimony of a witness who confirmed that the district attorney’s witness admitted that she had not been sexually assaulted, but that she could say she was and get money … which is exactly what she did.
I am publicly asking for a criminal investigation of that district attorney and his cohorts. This is a homogeneous group of exploitive and corrupt people, whose primary purpose is to advance themselves professionally and economically at the expense of Mr. Cosby’s life. If they can do this to Mr. Cosby, they can do so to anyone.
How much longer will we, the majority of the people, tolerate judicial, executive, legislative, media and corporate abuses of power? We, the majority of the people, must make America what it has declared itself to be….a democracy…not to be destroyed by vicious, lying, self-absorbed paradigms of evilness.
Once again, an innocent person has been found guilty based on an unthinking, unquestioning, unconstitutional frenzy propagated by the media and allowed to play out in a supposed court of law. This is mob justice, not real justice. This tragedy must be undone not just for Bill Cosby, but for the country.
I wish to thank the witnesses who courageously came forward at trial to testify as to the truth, as well as those witnesses who would have done so but for the judge preventing them from testifying. Someday the truth will prevail, it always does.

Hawaii on Volcano Eruption Watch as Hundreds of Earthquakes Rattle the Big Island in Less Than 72 hours
Hundreds of small earthquakes in Hawaii are shaking the eastern side of Big Island, prompting concerns that Kilauea Volcano could erupt.
Residents in the area should prepare and review emergency plans in case of evacuation, warned the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency on Wednesday.
Officials are keeping watch on Kilauea Volcano, which is one of the world’s most active volcanos.
It’s located in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which has since closed off nearly 15,700 acres due to “the possibility of a new eruption and unstable geologic activity.” But most of the park remains open, according to its statement.
Since Monday, hundreds of earthquakes — most of them around 2.0 magnitude — have been recorded in the area. The series of earthquakes came after a collapse of a crater floor of Puʻu ʻŌʻō, which is a volcanic cone in the eastern rift zone of the Kīlauea Volcano.
Since that collapse on Monday, about 250 earthquakes were reported in the area into Tuesday evening, according to Hawaiian Volcano Observatory Status Report.
The tremors have been going on for days now, jarring residents, who’ve been reporting nearly constant ground vibrations in some areas.
“It has now become unnerving,” Carol Shepard, a resident, told CNN affiliate KHON.
She said the flurry of earthquakes seemed to happen every minute.
“It’d be like the house would shake. It’d be like somebody that weighs 300 pounds came in my living room, and jumped up and down,” she said.
Residents in the area have also reported cracks emerging on roads.
The US Geological Survey said no steam or heat were seen escaping from the cracks, and they were small — about several inches across. These cracks are appearing from “deformation of the ground surface due to the underlying intrusion of magma” — which is molten rock that is underground, according to the agency.
“An outbreak of lava from the lower East Rift Zone remains a possible outcome of the continued unrest,” according to USGS in a Wednesday night update. “At this time it is not possible to say with certainty if or where such an outbreak may occur, but the area downrift (east) of Pu’u ‘Ō’ō remains the most likely location.”
It’s not possible to predict where an eruption could occur, but the areas that could be affected include the communities of Nanawale Estates, Leilani Estates or Kapoho, the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency stated.
It urged residents to prepare emergency plans and to stay informed for updates.

At Least 6 Officers Hurt in Explosion While Responding to ‘Very Violent Domestic Dispute’ in Connecticut
At least six police officers were injured in an explosion late Wednesday when they responded to a report about a man holding his wife hostage “in a very violent domestic dispute,” a North Haven, Connecticut, city official said.
Selectman Michael Freda said he had spoken to police, who said officers were “trying to appease the situation and a back building was booby trapped and apparently that was an explosion.”
Freda said the suspect had barricaded his wife in the house for three days and that she may have escaped the explosion. It is not known where the suspect is located.
Police were searching the property and went into a barn behind the house, he said, where a series of explosions took place.
The officers suffered cuts and abrasions, he said. Freda said there were no known fatalities at the moment, and the scene was stable.
CNN has reached out to the police department but has not been able to confirm Freda’s information.
Yale New Haven Hospital said on its Twitter account it had received seven patients “involved in tonight’s house explosion” and they were all being evaluated.
All seven are in the emergency room and under medical evaluation, Yale New Haven Hospital spokesman Mark D’Antonio told CNN.
Regional police have also responded to the site in North Haven, just outside New Haven, Freda said.
North Haven police responded to a barricaded subject in the same area earlier Wednesday, according to their Facebook page.

Trump Says Cohen Payment Was Retainer, Not a Campaign Contribution
President Donald Trump said Thursday that his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, was paid via a monthly retainer and that the hush agreement into which Cohen entered with Stormy Daniels had “nothing to do with the campaign.”
The President’s tweets come the morning after his lawyer, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, told Fox News that Trump paid back Cohen the $130,000 that was used to pay off Daniels, an adult film star who has alleged she had an affair with Trump. The President had previously denied knowledge of the payment, which has prompted complaints to the Justice Department and Federal Election Commission over potential violations of campaign finance law.
“Mr. Cohen, an attorney, received a monthly retainer, not from the campaign and having nothing to do with the campaign, from which he entered into, through reimbursement, a private contract between two parties, known as a non-disclosure agreement, or NDA,” Trump wrote on Twitter Thursday morning.
“These agreements are very common among celebrities and people of wealth,” Trump continued. “In this case it is in full force and effect and will be used in Arbitration for damages against Ms. Clifford (Daniels). The agreement was used to stop the false and extortionist accusations made by her about an affair despite already having signed a detailed letter admitting that there was no affair. ”
He added, “Prior to its violation by Ms. Clifford and her attorney, this was a private agreement. Money from the campaign, or campaign contributions, played no roll in this transaction.”
Speaking on Fox News Wednesday, Giuliani said the reimbursement to Cohen was “not campaign money” and that the payment was “perfectly legal.”
Cohen had admitted to paying Daniels out of his own pocket through a private LLC. Daniels has sued Trump and Cohen, saying the nondisclosure agreement is void because Trump did not sign it.
The White House has said Trump denies the affair.

Canadian Oysters Sicken Dozens in California, Officials Say
California health officials are warning residents not to eat oysters from British Columbia, Canada, following a norovirus outbreak.
About 100 people got sick in California after they consumed the raw oysters, health officials said.
“As of April 27, approximately 100 individuals have reported illness after they consumed raw British Columbian oysters sold by restaurants and retailers throughout the state,” the California Department of Public Health said.
“Laboratory testing has confirmed norovirus infection in several patients from both California and Canada. Although the number of reported new illnesses has decreased during the last week, the investigation is ongoing.”
Canada has reported 172 cases of gastrointestinal illness linked to consumption of raw oysters.
“Avoid eating raw and undercooked shellfish, including oysters, to reduce your risk of illness,” said Dr. Karen Smith, a public health officer in California.
“If you do eat shellfish, cook it until it reaches an internal temperature of at least 145°F. Quick steaming isn’t sufficient to kill norovirus.”
Norovirus is spread through the ingestion of infectious virions, which grow in the small intestine before being expelled in feces.
Infection usually occurs when someone eats food or drinks liquids that have been contaminated, touches surfaces or objects that are contaminated and then puts their hands in their mouth, or has contact with someone who has been infected, such as by sharing food.
Norovirus causes inflammation of the stomach, the intestines or both. A person usually develops symptoms 12 to 48 hours after being exposed.
Common symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps.

The Air National Guard Plane That Crashed Was on Its Final Military Flight
The military is investigating why an aging cargo plane making its final military flight nosedived into a Georgia highway on Wednesday, killing all nine people on board.
The Puerto Rico Air National Guard WC-130 was flying from Savannah, Georgia, to Tucson, Arizona, where it was to be decommissioned. The plane involved in Wednesday’s crash was at least 50 years old, according to an official familiar with the aircraft.
“Nine crew members died in the accident, but until their families and relatives are notified, we cannot give their names,” said Brigadier General Isabelo Rivera, the assistant general of Puerto Rico.
All were from Puerto Rico, officials said.
The investigation, which is underway, is being carried out by the National Guard Bureau and the Air Force, he said. The National Transportation Safety Board will not be involved, according to a statement from the Chatham County Board of Commissioners.
The crash occurred moments after takeoff near Hilton Head Airport in Savannah, Georgia, Rivera said.
There were no injuries on the ground.
“We don’t know the cause of the crash,” said Maj. Paul Dahlen.
The plane from the 156th Airlift Wing in Puerto Rico had been in Savannah for “a number of days” undergoing routine maintenance before heading to the Aerospace Regeneration and Maintenance Group in Arizona, he said. AMARG, also known as “The Boneyard,” is an Arizona facility where the military keeps thousands of aircraft as well as spacecraft.
State Highway 21 will remain closed indefinitely as investigators examine the crash site and debris field, according to Chatham County.
The next briefing is expected Thursday 8:30 a.m. ET.
Witness: ‘Ground shook like a bomb was going off’
Video from a business near the crash showed the horrifying final moments of the hulking plane, a version normally outfitted to do weather reconnaissance.
The jet, with four turboprop engines on its overhead wing, banked left as it came down. The plane then plummeted straight down behind the trees. Seconds later a fireball and thick black smoke appeared.
Truck driver Roger Best who works for a transportation company in Garden City, about 4 miles south of the crash, saw the plane overhead before it crashed. It was so low when it passed over that it rumbled the ground beneath his rig, he said.
His company handles hazardous materials, he said, expressing gratitude that the aircraft didn’t crash in his immediate vicinity.
“If he did, this area is a giant bomb and this whole (five-mile) radius would have blown up,” he told CNN over Facebook, calling the pilot a hero for avoiding the area. “He barely made it over the tree line (and it) looked as if he tried to turn and nose dive straight into the ground right in front of me.”
“The ground shook like a bomb was going off,” Denver Goodwin, who works down the street from the crash, said. “All the people in the building started panicking. It was absolutely horrible.”
A tweet from the Savannah Professional Firefighters Association showed the tail of the plane smoldering in thick smoke.
The WC-130
The WC-130 that crashed was used during Hurricane Maria for relief efforts, the Puerto Rico National Guard said. The plane was also used during Hurricane Irma to rescue US citizens out of the British Virgin Islands.
WC-130 is a variant of the C-130. Produced continuously since 1954, the C-130 is a reliable and versatile aircraft with several iterations. It can be outfitted for transport, reconnaissance, search and rescue, research, refueling, patrol or as a gunship.

Las Vegas Police Release Body Camera Video From Officers Who Responded to Gunman’s Hotel Suite
Las Vegas police on Wednesday released body camera footage from officers who entered gunman Stephen Paddock’s hotel suite immediately following October’s mass shooting.
Paddock, 64, killed 58 people and injured almost 500 when he opened fire on 22,000 concertgoers from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
Paddock’s motive is not yet known and may never be known. Officers who entered his hotel room found him dead.
Sheriff Joe Lombardo of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said video footage, 911 call audio and documents relating to the October 1 massacre would be released on a rolling basis starting with the body camera footage from two officers.
“I don’t know how this footage will be played in the media, but I want to warn you, if you are a survivor or a family who lost a loved one, you should know the video from this concert is disturbing and graphic,” he said.
Lombardo said he anticipated the materials would be released on a weekly basis but would not say if the information would be posted on a website or emailed to media.
Court ordered release of footage
The Nevada Supreme Court ruled Friday that police had to release the bodycam footage and 911 call audio from the shooting.
Police had appealed an earlier ruling that the material be released, following requests by media, including CNN.
Lombardo denied that police were trying to be uncooperative. In a press briefing Tuesday, he cited cost, allocation of resources and potential further victimization of those affected by the shooting as reasons for delaying the release of footage, recordings and documents.
For example, the department had to reassign detectives from their “primary responsibility” to go over the reports and footage before they were made public, and some personnel would have to endure reliving the shooting, he said.
“I want the community to know the release of the videos, 911 and documents will have a significant impact on the victims of this tragedy. We believe the release of the graphic footage will further traumatize a wounded community,” he said. “And for that, we apologize.”
Lombardo said no employees will be made available for interviews, but said a final comprehensive report on the shooting will come.
Criticism of police
Police were criticized about their response when a timeline suggested there had been a six-minute delay between Paddock shooting a security guard and the gunman opening fire on the crowds below his hotel suite.
The timeline raised questions about why police didn’t arrive on the scene sooner.
“In the public space, the word ‘incompetence’ has been brought forward. And I am absolutely offended with that characterization,” Lombardo said on October 13.
He said that during the six-minute gap, the security guard had been trying to access Paddock’s room — and that he had been shot around the same time the gunman started firing on concertgoers.
“So there is no conspiracy between the FBI, between the (Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department) and MGM (the hotel owner). Nobody is attempting to hide anything in reference to this investigation,” Lombardo said at the time.
“The dynamics and the size of this investigation requires us to go through voluminous amounts of information in order to draw an accurate picture.”

Charges Reduced in Joshua Tree Couple’s Alleged Child Abuse Case
The Joshua Tree couple accused of abusing their children who were found living in a plywood structure just weeks ago have had their felony child abuse charges reduced to other criminal counts, court records show.
The announcement of felony charges against the couple last month drew outrage from family members and friends, as one person told a Press-Enterprise reporter: “They’re being punished for being homeless.”
Mona Kirk, 51, and Daniel Panico, 73, were arrested on March 1 and then charged with felony child abuse just a day later. Now, the couple is instead facing charges of willful cruelty to a child and failure to address truancy, records show. They have pleaded not guilty.
At the time of their arrest, the couple’s children — ages 14, 13 and 11 — told authorities they were living in a plywood structure just outside a trailer. Law enforcement officials initially described that makeshift shelter as a “box” but later clarified the children were not being held captive.
“Rather, the entire family was living a very confined area,” San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Captain Trevis Newport said in a tweet.
The family’s shelter did not have running water, electricity or heat, Newport said.
Still, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, he said the initial reports of the couple’s children living in a “box” were misleading.
“They’re homeless,” he said. “It’s a shelter, the shape of a box … nowhere near what it sounded like when it came out.”

Search Continues for Armed Sex Offender Still at Large After Wild RV Chase Across L.A. and Kern Counties
A manhunt is still underway for a registered sex offender and parolee who led police on an hours-long car chase Tuesday in his motor home with two of his young children on board, authorities said.
Sheriff’s officials said that Stephen Houk is considered armed and dangerous.
Officials said that Houk is a wanted man in Oregon, where he is registered as a sex offender. In 2002, Houk was convicted of sodomy and sexual abuse, according to records from the Oregon Judicial Department. The 46-year-old is sought in Santa Clarita for assault with a deadly weapon, child abduction, terrorist threats and evading authorities.
Houk was involved in a dispute with his wife earlier Tuesday before escaping from authorities on foot after his motor home got stuck in an almond orchard in a rural area north of Bakersfield.
